It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop

It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 11/29/12 06:39 AM

I feel like I should pay a fee for the number of threads I have in the health section.

Around lunchtime today the area around Coopers eye looked puffy. I looked but couldn't see anything so assumed a bite. I gave him an anti-histamine and thought if it's still like that in the morning we would go to the vets.

Well just before he wouldn't/couldn't pick up his ball. Eventually when he did, he screamed. Rang the vet and we got there just before they closed.

The vet thinks it is an abscess behind the eye frown They are giving him an anesthetic and will check to make sure it is not a tooth (I think Coop wants to be like Rosa in all ways) but he thinks it's probably a grass seed that has traveled to his eye. So they will make a small incision at the joint of the mouth and see.

He will stay there overnight frown

Any good thoughts please send his way. My poor boy just cannot catch a break teary

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 11/29/12 06:53 AM

Just had a phone call from the vet, he has a drain inserted through the back of his mouth into the back of his eye and they will leave that in until morning.

He said his teeth are fine and there is no 'classic' punture wound in his mouth from a grass seed etc.

He thinks it is a retrobulbar abscess most likely due to bacteria in his blood stream. Apparently the blood flow behind the eye is much slower.

http://www.petplace.com/dogs/retrobulbar-abscess-in-dogs/page1.aspx

Hopefully by morning he will look and feel better otherwise they will do further tests (xrays etc).

I should have said when he examined him, as soon as he tried to open his mouth, Cooper screamed and hid under the exam table.

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 11/29/12 01:45 PM

Thank you all so very much hugging

Leah had a good thought that perhaps if he does indeed have infection in his blood that perhaps he has had it from when the drains were in his elbows? I will ask when they call me in the morning.

Jean, yes I think that is right. The surgeon did say that when he has the THR, if he was ever to have any dental work done (for example) that he would need to be on abx before.

It's strange how they know something is up, Moo always sleeps near me (under the coffee table) while I am sitting on the couch. Since I got home from the vets she has not moved from the spot where Coopie sleeps wub And because he is a Labrador in appetite, he constantly lets me know it is nearly dinner time, well damned if I forgot and didn't feed Molly until 7 pm!

Hopefully I will hear something in about 7 hours so it must be time for bed, Thanks again for your concern and lovely thoughts. I just want a healthy Cooper frown

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 11/30/12 01:32 AM

Thank you all, we are home!

I had a huge chat to the vet. His eye is a bit better but he is on Clavubactin 500mg twice a day. The Cytology didn't really show much at all. He said if this was caused by some infection from either his elbow drains or when he had the nasty infection from KC, that he would have been a VERY sick puppy. He said it is unusual but that sometimes it is just some bacteria from the gut that gets into the bloodstream.

So basically I have to keep watching him and see how he goes. If he needs to go back it will be much more invasive. Eg: Remove one of the back molars whose roots go into the back of the eye, so that would be another drainage point.

He showed me photos and description from a textbook and I am so glad we caught this early.

The good news is porky puppy had two breakfasts! The vet fed him and then the nurse didn't realise so gave him round 2!!!

He squealed twice when he fully opened his mouth when he saw me.

Fingers crossed the abx knocks whatever this is on the head and fast.

Oh he also said that it would be advisable to have Coop on abx before his surgery.

Thank you all for your support, I so need it.

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 11/30/12 03:29 AM

Amazing how quickly you caught it and how quickly they figured it out and treated it. Whew. I am so glad.

He is one of the most handsome dogs.

I am going to ask a question because I am a worry wart. While any surgery can lead to infection I would guess, I believe (but am not totally sure) that the THR is one that has a higher rate of it? Would his history of infection indicate that possibly an FHO might be a safer fix? I am sure they can also get infection from that as well, my understanding is that it is a lower risk (but I do not have the numbers/references to back that up so it's just in talking to my vet). Like I said, this is a worry wart question!

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 11/30/12 08:46 AM

Thank you all again hugging

You can see in the photo's his right eye (left in pics) is squinty. I just went to give him a treat before and he must have opened his mouth too wide as he squealed frown

Jean, that is really interesting, thank you so much. I will email the surgeon and let him know what has happened and ask him.

That's the thing, I am now so scared that when he does have the surgery he is going to be at great risk of complications.

Apparently one of the main characteristic to diagnose this is the screaming when opening the mouth.
Posted By: Braverhund

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 11/30/12 11:44 AM

Handsome, handsome Cooper, be still my heart! What Jean is mentioning is worth discussing with your vet(s), methinks. Less risk of infection in a dog with his history, would be something to consider, if either surgery would work for him well enough. Bianca, count on ongoing good thoughts for Cooper!
Posted By: Good_Karma

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 11/30/12 11:49 AM

I agree for sure in telling Cooper's hip surgeon about this. I think because there is an implant used, the risk of infection is greater. I remember when my mom had her hips done, she couldn't even shave her legs the week before because if she had the slightest cut on her legs they would not be able to do the surgery for fear of there being an underlying infection that could flare up post op.

Scary stuff. So glad he is back home and on the mend!

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 12/01/12 01:37 PM

Maybe it is a tooth? How good a look did the vet get at his teeth? I don't know how good Cooper is at the vet but Rosa is pretty good for being handled and the vet didn't see her tooth problem when we went in the first time. She looked at the sides of her teeth but the cavity was on the chewing surface. And the tooth that was already dead looked perfectly fine.

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 12/01/12 02:15 PM

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 12/01/12 09:06 PM

When I took a special NSAID once, it made my eyes swell badly, but with the pain, I certainly would think tooth too. If, as the vet was thinking, maybe bacteria from the gut, then I would want to think hard about intestinal permeability and treat for leaky gut? You should be seeing some digestive issues in leaky gut syndromes, but kibbles are so formulated to give firm stools, maybe not?

Whatever is going on, I'm really glad that he is home and the swelling is down, poor boy!
Posted By: bianca

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 12/02/12 09:27 AM

Thank you all hugging

He was given a general anesthetic so the vet was able to have a good look at his teeth. But it is possible of course. I emailed him today (haven't heard back of course as it's Sunday) because while Coop seems his normal happy doofy self, he is still in pain at times. He yawned today and squealed.

I've been keeping him inside mostly as every time he goes out he tries to pick up a ball and squeals frown (I generally don't allow balls inside).

So unless there is a huge change overnight, he will be going back tomorrow.

Lisa, I read up a little on leaky gut syndrome and of course it's possible but I don't see any symptoms?

I haven't emailed the specialist yet as I wanted to wait until this is resolved so I can tell him what has happened. I just want Coop to be healthy for once.

I'm glad that he seems good! Do watch carefully when the abx are done, in case he needs to be back on them asap. Hopefully he will be done with this and that's it!

The surgeon may want him on abx before the hip surgery?

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 12/04/12 10:02 PM

Sounds like things are going in the right direction! There is still a month to go before the surgery right? Hopefully if the infection plans on returning (and hopefully it doesn't), you will know well in advance of the operation. I agree with Lisa about keeping an eagle eye on things and keeping the Otho surgeon informed too. Fingers crossed.

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 12/05/12 08:25 AM

Thank you Lisa and Leah!

I emailed the surgeon last night and explained that I may be paranoid but here is a list of all the health issues Cooper has had and the latest is really concerning me prior to him having an implant.

My phone rang this afternoon and the first words I heard "you are not paranoid"!!! Made me laugh, but anyway he said he is not concerned by all the previous issues but this one is a worry.

He must have called my vet too. He said he would not be comfortable going ahead with the THR if this remains unresolved. Ie: never do find a bloody grass seed. So if nothing changes then he will most likely have to have a head MRI in a month before anything happens.

Thanks again hugging

Tomorrow night is the last day of abx so we will see. And yes my vet had already said that abx at least a few days before surgery is a must.

The surgeon said to keep him up to date and that he has asked Andrew (normal vet) to do the same.

Re: It's me again, please send good thoughts for Coop - 12/05/12 11:58 AM

Very glad he is right on top of this! I am jealous that you can e-mail him lol. I would pay money for the ability to e-mail my vet or Rosa's surgeon.

Well, having to do another procedure (and an expensive one) before getting to the surgery is a bummer, but considering it could be fatal if there was a lurking infection I don't see that you have much of a choice. You just can't take chances with that kind of thing.

Oh Cooper, you are working on becoming the most expensive dog on the forum aren't you??

Sorry he still might be having pain. Do you have a follow up appointment for him with your regular or is it a "wait and see if it comes back" kind of situation?

Checking in on your boy, hope he continues to do well. Do you have any anti-infection herbals around? Oil of oregano maybe? Other?

Awww thank you for thinking of the Doopie! hugging

He is fine so far, I keep checking his eye and when he is playing but so far so good!

Lisa, nope! Should I get some? Would that be from health food stores?

I have ordered and have had them shipped asap Carmens supplements. I read that some people seem to notice increased muscle mass so thought what the heck! I should get them this week hopefully.

'The Doopie' ? is that the Southern hemisphere form of a (developing) Doofinator?

Who cares-Cooper is adorable and IS getting better crossedfingers

Bianca, hope all is still going well with jaw, etc. I don't really know about the herbals, but with the surgery somewhat dependent on no infection, I might kick the idea around a bit. If I were to add anything, I would add some oregano oil, either liquid capsules, or get small capule and just put a couple drops a day in it. Just a thought.

Hope things over there are "stable"!

Thank you Lisa, I will have a hunt around for something suitable hugging

Alison, thank you hugging

He seems totally back to his version of normal! He did so much better today on our walk in the lake...ie, not so much jumping around like some big black sea monster laugh There were two little kids there who were fascinated watching him act like a loon rofl blush

Miss Moo is soooo much more stable! Although the wind has been strong the last few days so she is acting a bit off (not eating breakfast).

I keep forgetting to tell you that the Canine Plus Pain pills that we are giving Rosa seem to be helping her limp finally. It's been at least a week since we've seen any lameness. We even let her ram around with Niko all last weekend and she didn't have any problems. I think we are about halfway through the bottle (120 pills). So it took a while to have an effect but she is most definitely better now. I don't know if it would be worth trying to get Cooper on it now, since it seems to take a while to really take effect.

Thank you all! I am pretty chuffed too! smile

Leah, I am so happy something is helping Miss Muppet and thank you for letting me know but oh heck I can't keep ordering things for him, I'm going broke laugh I think I will just try the supplements that are on their way and see how he goes. But I will keep that product as a reserve thanks!

Alison, he really is an idiot! He loves water and swimming but walking him in it is crazy silly!

Moo freaked out last night when we had a burst of heavy rain, I was in the shower and heard banging on the bathroom door. Yep they got through the gate to the laundry (ate the cat food) and then she was plastered to me! Always something smile

Sorry to read that about Moo and the rain - Poppy the greyhound hates wind, rain and thunder and it made us feel a bit helpless when nothing seemed to help her calm down. At least Miss Molly doesn't take off - she knows you will take care of her. hugging

I'm sorry Miss Moo had an episode during the rain, and scarfed catfood, but it does seem like Cooper and Molly are doing better! I am sending good vibes for Cooper to feel well, and for Moo to feel stable in any weather. Really, you try new supplements, new therapies, you always prioritize your dogs' wellbeing, Bianca. They are two wonderful dogs who are so very lucky to have you! goodjob
