Deep breath, Mary Ann... This surgeon will not put her in any danger. He sounds wonderful and caring and extremely competent. First of all, he wouldn't want to risk the wrath of Mary Ann is he makes one miss-step!

Nothing I can say to make you relax, because I know there's nothing anyone could say to me. But know that there are so many people sending good and healing thoughts to Chey...

We'll all be on pins and needles and waiting for an update tomorrow. Chey has weathered so many things and I KNOW she has the very strongest will to get through this.

Will be thinking of you tomorrow... hugging

I don't know what the right decisions is, but at some point, you have to trust the professionals, and logically, the surgery sounds like it will give her more of a fighting chance, as long as they think they can get her through it.

hugging Thank you for all you are doing for this great dog! As everybody said, you and your family healed her so incredibly well that surgery can even be considered! The surgeon is on her side, and will operate if and when it's in her best interest. I am so grateful that veterinary medicine is where it is today. I remember the old days, and I am so grateful for what can be done today.

Feli went for surgery when she was 13 or so, for a rectal tumor. Luckily, I had to go to work, it distracted me while she was at the clinic! There was no choice, the tumor had broken open and had to go. The tumor had been invisible, and must have grown fast between her senior wellness exams every six months. She came through surgery well, and was relieved.

Sending big hugs and healing energy to you both. hugging

I'm sorry Mary Ann - you should have told us what was going on so you wouldn't have to deal with this all week without support. I'm still going to have a glass of wine tonight for you both and say a prayer. Let us know something tomorrow as soon as you can. You know we're here for you and feel free to call me if you want to tonight.

Look at that face. I snagged it for the blog! http://southerncrossgsd.blogspot.com/

On the chip in page - and I don't have the page because it's hard to look at - is a picture of the tumor. Thinking of that and hoping that it will soon be gone and she will be all better.

Ohhh, Mary Ann, I love that pouty shot of Cheyenne. I'd just love to grab her cheeks and give her a big smooshy kiss on her nose.

In terms of the surgery, a few things come to mind in terms of everything that you've mentioned since your appointment with the surgeon.

First of all, from what you've described, it sounds like a fairly simple procedure to remove the tumor. Simple often means quick turn around time from the time Cheyenne goes to sleep until she wakes up again. If they are planning to use conscious sedation (fast acting drugs, easily reversed if necessary), then that may be why they are not overly concerned about her upper respiratory symptoms. I'd ask about that tomorrow.

The other thing I thought about as I was reading is how incredibly thorough you've been with all of this. You've asked all the right questions, talked with all the right people, and most of all, you've created a strong presence with all of Cheyenne's medical people. Your consent to surgery is well-informed. You can't do better than that, in terms of advocating for Cheyenne. The rest is out of your hands.

As you know, I'm very conservative when it comes to my dogs. I let a lot of things ride, unless I felt strongly that it would put me on a better road than I was already on. So I tried to envision myself in your shoes right now, and at this point, I think I'd be taking the same path as you.

Val's story just reinforces for me again how different our pets are from humans in terms of pain and recovery. I'm with everyone else who believes Cheyenne recognizes a good thing when she sees it, and has every intention of milking her situation for as long as she can. wink

Isoflurane smile And then there are other meds from the invoice listed on the blog but I can't post it because I turned the invoice into a fundraising list! But if you want to see what meds they have it's there.
