Jason, I would have told her yes, he knows how to sit but he doesn't speak English (nicer version than saying doesn't speak idiot).

Your post made me think about this though. I will probably stop doing that. It is kinda sub-conscious and never thought about it. I like the approach that REI mentioned. ASKING if they have to work for it.

If it were an employee asking me if the dog had to work for it I would probably answer, Well yes, I suppose they could run the register but s/he was having issues with calculating the tax the last time. Perhaps they could stock the shelves." rofl

Toozer jumps right up on the counter at the Petsmart and opens the cookie container by hooking her tongue thru the little finger hole!

Let me tell ya, I would have a HUGE problem with someone putting their hands on my dog to "train" or "correct" her without my permission. Fortunately, she disregards the "commands" of most people who yell "sit sit SIIITTTT" at her. LOL

Katie, you got some good Petsmart stories. I'm sure you and your dogs are very popular there! laugh

Yup. This happens to me ALL the time too. Put that down as another thing I don't get.

One time someone came up to Obie and I and asked Obie to shake.

Now Obie is the king of paw tricks so of course he put out his right paw immediately.

The woman practically squealed and asked: "Has he done that before?" She looked so happy I didn't have the heart to tell her the truth so I said "No. First time I've seen it."

She then went on to 'teach' him 'other paw", "wave", "high five" in a span of 2 minutes. She left a happy lady smile

Ike doesn't sit unless there is a wobble board and you speak to him in German.

(I joke but he is so weird that I think that might actually be the truth!)

OK, just for sake of discussion, I have to play a little devils advocate here. Isn't it appropriate for employees of a pet store to expect that dogs in their establishment display basic manners, like not jumping on their counters?

And Jason... either Ike knows how to sit or you are a master video editor. smile

If that happens, we're going to need helmets. Just not sure if it should be for us or for them.

My personal opinion on this is that they taught him to get up on the counter, they can deal with the after effects. What is precious and cute in a puppy that just barely reaches his nose over the counter, is perhaps not as cute to some as the 85lb full grown adult. I know I allowed it...but I still think it's cute. wink

He certainly doesn't get up on the counter at my house. I take him to restaurants, parks, flea markets. He's not climbing all over the places there. It seems to be a strictly PetsMart phenomenon.

I really was just playing devils advocate. Bison does it too. gsdbeggin

They have never refused to give him a cookie. (I do think that would be completely in their rights to do that though.) But, I think he is more interested in seeing what is going on behind the counter. He has to know what is going on at all times. Or maybe he is just preparing incase he has to work the cash register for his cookie next time. wink

I know smile

I have sort of strong feelings about the people who work at PetsMart.

I knew someone who was a trainer and she used to drive me nuts with some of the stupid stuff she'd do with dogs...I think sometimes they try this stuff in the hope that your dog will suddenly do it for them and then you'll sign up for their class...

rofl I love it!!!

I actually WANT my dogs to sit for treats and I hate it when people give them one as I'm just getting the words out of my mouth that they have to sit first.

I wanna know why every time I take Halo out to train in public places people assume I'm "a trainer". I can't tell you how many times I've said "no, I just train my own dogs", but I said it today AND yesterday. Don't they know any average normal people that train their dogs?
