Heidi is coming up on her three-year rabies shot (due at the end of September). I've read enough about vaccine-related problems to be worried about it. We've had her for almost three years now and she had all of her shots at the rescue before we got her so I don't know if she had any averse affects previously.

I know that California is pretty strict about its rabies vaccination requirements. Plus, she goes to daycare about one day a week. The daycare allows titer testing for Parvo/distemper, so that's been good, but I've been dreading the rabies shot. Does anyone have any information about what people can do to offset the effects of the shots, reactions to look for, etc.

Thanks for any information and/or advice!

Never had a Problem
they only thing I can think of is that they sleep like babies (my 2 anyway) after the shot

Nothing to worry about really
I rather the 3 year anyway

You can give the homeopathic remedy Thuja right after you give the shot. That's what I did for Rafi when he got his rabies shot.

I think it's wise to be concerned about the rabies vaccine, for a variety of reasons.

Russel Blaylock, in a video about the flu vaccine, noted that one way to reduce the risk or vaccine reaction was to ice the area afterward. What this does is prevent the body from sending out a bunch of immune cells to the area, thus decreasing a systemic reaction which will last and be ongoing in the body. I went searching for the video, and found the following, which I hadn't seen before:

Quote:
Treatment for Toxic Vaccine Exposure

1. Place a cold compress on the site of the injection immediately after the injection and continue this as often as possible for at least two days. If symptoms of fever, irritability, fatigue or flu-like symptoms reoccur continue the cold compresses until they abate. A cold shower or bath will also help.
2. Take fish oils I recommend the Norwegian fish oil made by Carlson Labs it has the correct balance of EPA and DHA to reduce the cytokine storm. The dose is one tablespoon a day if severe symptoms develop two tablespoons a day until well and then switch to one tablespoon a day. Children one teaspoon a day.
3. Curcumin, quercetin, ferulic acid and ellagic acid as a mixture the first two must be mixed with extravirgin olive in one teaspoon. Take the mix three times a day (500 mg of each)
4. Vitamin E (natural form) 400 IU a day (high in gamma-E)
5. Vitamin C 1000 mg four times a day
6. Astaxanthin 4 mg a day
7. Zinc 20 mg a day for one week then 5 mg a day
8. Avoid all immune stimulating supplements (mushroom extracts, whey protein) except beta-glucan it has been shown to reduce inflammation, microglial activation and has a reduced risk of aggravating autoimmunity, while increasing antiviral cellular immunity.
9. Take a multivitamin/mineral daily (one without iron Extend Core)
10. Magnesium citrate/malate 500 mg of elemental magnesium two capsules three times a day
11. Vitamin D3:
1. All Children 5000 IU a day for two weeks after vaccine then 2000 IU a day thereafter
2. Adults 20,000 IU a day after vaccine for two weeks then 10,000 IU a day thereafter
3. Take 500 mg to 1000 mg of calcium citrate a day for adults and 250 mg a day for children under age 12 years.
12. Avoid all mercury-containing seafood
13. Avoid omega-6 oils (corn, safflower, sunflower, soybean, canola and peanut oils)
14. Blenderize parsley and celery and drink 8 ounces twice a day
15. Take Jatoba tea extract (add 20 drops in on cup of tea) one day before the vaccine and the twice a day thereafter. (you can get it at http://www.iherb.com/Amazon-Therapeutics-Jatoba-1-oz-30-ml/14429?at=0) It is inexpensive.

excerpted from here, which also has the videos: http://weeksmd.com/?p=1966
I've read one of the books that this guy has written on fighting cancer, I know he knows what he is talking about.

***********

Juliette de Bairacli Levy was one of the first experts in Natural Rearing, and I should probably throw in her advice here....

"Juliette de Bairacli Levy deals with compulsory vaccination laws...by neutralizing the vaccinations as much as possible., which she does by immediately pressing outward around the injection site, then rubbing the area with raw lemon juice. This is followed by a day of watered milk and honey and use of laxatives for two nights."

***********

My experience is that homeopathy is the most powerful way to combat vaccine reactions. The problem with that, is that you have to know the type of reaction and have someone that knows what they are doing figure out what remedy to give. Most folks either use Thuja or Lyssin. When my nephew vaxed his pup, I was in a quandry, I used Lyssin, which is difficult to find. Thuja is pretty common. Lyssin is more specific to the rabies vaccine, which is why I went with that one.

A homeopathic practitioner (furryboots) discusses using Lyssin here:

You can get Lyssin here www.homeopathyovernight.com

Only ever seen one reaction..

You never know if and when something will happen.

If your concerned talk to your veterinarian.

PS:

There is NO difference between a 1-yr Rabies shot and a 3-yr.

Same shot, same amount.

Just local regulations involved in that decision.

rofl Like that is very helpful. The majority of vets wouldn't know a vaccine reaction if it smacked them upside the head.

Many vaccine side effects can occur months after the vaccine:

Other diseases that were highly represented within three months post vaccination included cancer (35.1%) , chorea (81%), encephalitis (78.6%), heart conditions (39.2%), kidney damage (53.7%), liver damage/failure (61.5%), paralysis of the rear end (69.2%), and pancreas problems (54.2%).

Research conducted at Purdue University shows routinely vaccinated dogs developing auto antibodies to a vast range of normal canine biochemicals - which corroborates our findings.

Interestingly, our study showed that arthritis and Chronic Destructive Reticulo Myelopathy (CDRM - a degenerative disease affecting myelin in the spinal cord) occur in clusters nine months after vaccination, suggesting that the damage from vaccines resulting in these two diseases takes longer to develop or to show their symptoms.

I once had a cat that had a reaction to a rabies vaccine, she was more lethargic than my other animals are after a vaccine (several days) and she developed a hard walnut sized lump at the vaccine site. It was acknowledge by my vet and a friend of mine who is a cat vet. Luckily, it stopped "growing" and eventually dissolved on its own (after 3 months), but I never did vaccinations for her again even with the law. Both vets supported this decision despite it being "against the law" to not booster her rabies.

My dogs have never had any issues. If you are worried, just make sure they are only giving the rabies vax (not several boosters at once). The 3 year is the same as 1 year, it's not a higher dose.

Basu had a reaction to his rabies shot. He developed a lump that turned into an abscess pretty quickly. AFter that I titered him. He had vaccinosis though because his previous owners vaccinated him every single year. mad

Lisa;

This was very interesting.

I have never understood losing Sophie to congestive heart failure just 4 months after her annual check up - a check up that included a rabies shot. Everything, including blood work, was great at that check up. 4 months later she collapsed and died while we were in the vets office.

She had missed just her supper and breakfast - that wasn't Sophie so we were in the vet's by 9:00 am. Her xrays were terrible - her heart was so enlarged that it was collapsing her lung.

While they were counting out the pills we lost her. frown

Both Skye and Buddy will get their rabies shot next year - I have them do titers for the other stuff. I too am very worried - especially with Skye's autoimmune problems.

I think we are all right to worry about this shot.

Oh Bonnie, that's terrible about Sophie hugging

It was clear when Indy reacted to her shots. Also clear I was speaking a foreign language to all the different vets I saw after that trying to figure out how to make her better. I heard all sorts of idiotic things from them, including one holistic vet that said that my worrying about her was making her sick. Yikes. I couldn't even get the vets to run the test that would help determine if it was the vaccine that was causing the problems. FINALLY, when she was at a specialist for pancreas problems that developed after all this, I was able to talk him into running the test. Sure enough, the head of the serology lab diagnosed her with an immune-complex disease induced by her vaccine (lyme).

I strongly encourage anyone that has a dog that has a vaccine reaction to have it fully documented, even if the vet does not agree with the cause. Down the road, that might be the basis that will get you a vaccine waiver if you need it. Indy has a permanent rabies exemption on file with the county.

With Skye, I wonder if you titered her (rabies titer through Dodds is typically the cheapest), if you could get a waiver letter from your vet? I don't know how that impacts the therapy stuff. I would love to have Indy titered, but ddon't dare in case she's not protected.

Mercury free shots....I think the only rabies that is merc free might be a cat shot, and it's a 1 year shot, but I could be wrong?

Merial makes both a 1 year and 3 year labeled thimerosal free Rabies vaccine. I have never seen the 3 year though, my vet only stocks the 1 year. Both appear to be labeled for both dogs and cats, but I've only seen them recommended for cats.

Even without the merc, there is usually an aluminum adjuvant that is used, so I'm not sure I'd trade a 1 year shot (in a 3 year state).

Thanks for all the great information! This was a long time ago, but our last dog, Sheba, had her rabies shot in November and by the the end of December, we knew something was wrong with her, by January, we found out she had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and by March, she had died. She was 10 at the time. I'll never know for sure if it was vaccine-related, but it does make me wonder (and want to do everything I can to protect Heidi).

Fortunately, the therapy group I am with does accept titers. It's something to think about, isn't it? Thanks for the info.
