So the dogs were out front this morning and Ciara started barking - not her "I want in" bark, her "there's somebody out there" bark.

We go to the door to see what's going on and DH said someone is driving onto our field - just a bit past the driveway. Ciara comes into the house, Caleb is nowhere to be seen in the front yard.

DH yells out "what are you doing driving onto the property?"

The guy backs out and drives into the driveway - said he just saw the biggest coyote he's ever seen going down the hill and was trying to check it out.

DH explained that it wasn't a coyote - it was Caleb exploring the grounds in one of the areas the deer pass through.

DH politely asked him not to shoot our dog. The gentleman was apologetic and they chatted for a while. He's not from our town, he was here because he uses a butcher on our road to process venison. We ended up with a couple of packs of venison meat.

I promise - it's not a coyote, it's just my big hairy GSD Caleb. gsdhead

My hair just stood on end thinking Caleb could be confused with a coyote and possibly hurt. Glad it all worked out well.

That is scary that he could've been mistaken and had something bad happen. Not that he looks like a coyote, sigh.

Score on the venison though!

It's not the first time we've had that comment. There are coyotes in the area, we hear them at night sometimes and I saw tracks on the side of the road one day last summer that I'm pretty sure were coyote tracks.

A friend's girlfriend saw him from a distance when driving home one day and said the same thing - biggest coyote I've ever seen. Her boyfriend explained that we have shepherds and when you only see his head and some of the body if he's a on the downside of a hill from a distance I guess it's easy to think that is what you're seeing.

I don't think the guy today would have done anything more than try and get a closer look. If I thought that would be a problem I'd be posting our property really fast to make sure hunters know that this is private property and they don't have permission to hunt anything here. And I'd make sure that Caleb wasn't roaming around without one of us with him.

I'm glad, Johanna, that the man was apologetic But how scary is that to have someone drive down after your dog. Coyotes have a wide range of sizes, too, though. They can be quite large. Prick ears, long tails, pointy noses --- there's a general resemblance between GSDs and coyotes and wolves. I'm also very glad that Caleb is safe. It's only half of a joke that I suggest maybe he needs an orange vest in hunting season? In both Arkansas and Wyoming I'd tie surveyor's tape to my saddle and my dogs' collars for hunting season.

There's a person up the road from us that has been walking her orange vested GSD since hunting season started. It might be something to think about for both of them. Ciara mostly stays close to me, but she sometimes accompanies him down toward the tree line to check out what's been passing through the field. One of these days, we're going to get a trail cam to put up. I know the deer pass through going down to the river for water and they had a grand time with DH's beans this past summer. The bushes they went after are in the general vicinity of the spot Caleb was wandering around yesterday.

Johanna, to continue to give your dogs freedom on your own property, some kind of orange vest or collar or something sounds great. Your pictures of Caleb and Ciara show nothing like a coyote-but with a stranger passing by-who knows?

Anyway, I'm sure that you and your husband can handle it-it's just scary reading.

OMG, Johanna, please get those precious babies vests. I agree with Mary Jane, they look nothing like coyotes, but people will shoot at anything that moves.
