Abbey is fighting her body to be the dog she wants to be- running, playing, loving. But she's collapsing more and paying dearly when she tries to play. Her quality of life seems to be lowering a bit more as the weeks go by. I know she's in pain, it's her stubborn personality that she uses to hide her pain. Her anxiety is higher. She can't hear well and has some blindness going. She's got dementia and her neuropathy is progressing. She shows some interest in playing with the family and Ranger, but she starts to struggle and then has to lay down. Keeping her comfortable is becoming more challenging. I have been patient with my husband who hasn't wanted to think about putting her to sleep but I need to advocate for her. I understand we don't want to send her to the rainbow bridge too soon. I found out about a local organization that caters to owners of senior pets facing end-of-life care and end-of-life decisions. They helped a friend of ours with her dog of 13 years and after some research they seem strongly recommended. Husband will talk to someone from there. If it is decided it's too soon- then we can at least get some tips on caring for her during this final chapter of her life.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's a very difficult thing.

Luc went through some similar challenges when he was older. I always wonder if we let him go too soon, but I don't think really. I just miss him is all.

I'm glad there is an organization your husband can talk to - that's really helpful.

Whatever you decide, you have our support. Sending gentle thoughts.

I am so sorry. Abbey has had the best family and life with you. Now is the hard part to let your best friend go with the dignity that they deserve. Sending my thoughts.

Thank you, everyone. Tuesday was pretty rough, after her last fall on Monday and not recovering from that. Abbey had no interest in interacting with anyone and didn't want to get up to eat. She had to eat in bed. She was not in her usual spot where she has eyes on all exits whenever we are not home, and she was not interested in checking out my changed outfit like she always did. Wednesday she seemed better and yesterday she got better. She's interacting but very clingy. Ranger has been amazing with her. He wants her to play with him but he will stop playing with her soon as she lays down after playing for a few minutes. I guess he's pretty good at sensing she is having a hard time, or maybe that's a beagle thing, I don't know. Abbey still has difficulty getting up to go outside for bathroom breaks and when she does finally go outside, she does not want to go anywhere in the yard without us there. Then there's the eating. She have days where she'll eat ok, then days where it seems like she doesn't know how to eat and tries to eat the bowl and then wonder why she's not getting any food.

Husband had talked with someone from the organization and after discussion, he decided we do need to give her the kindness of a peaceful death. The boys will be on fall break so we'll be spending the next few days loving on her and keeping her comfortable, and on the day of, let her have her favorite treats. I am praying her legs don't give out because we do not want her last hours to be nothing but suffering. I've made my peace with this but I am still so sad. She is such a good dog, so perfect serving as our family guardian, keeping my kids safe and troublemakers away. Protecting my family from aggressive dogs and raccoons. Running off Kitty the skunk. I have unforgettable stories, like the day she escaped my mom's yard in search of my family and bailing the neighborhood dogs out of their fenced yard and attempted break-in of another home. She was so much work in the beginning, but was well worth the reward. I am so proud to have her as our family dog.

Cherish and remember the great times with Abbey when she was young and spunky and full of life. Those are the times you need to have in your memory. Those are the memories that will help.

Also wanted to let you know that Ranger will be missing Abbey when she is gone, so you need to do special things with him so he doesn't get to depressed. He will look for her and be confused so you need to make it ok for him.

Ranger will probably be given lots of attention. I'm so glad we got Ranger. He is going to be a source of comfort for my kids. My youngest was too young to experience the loss of my dad, and my oldest might remember the loss. This is going to be their first major loss and I have no idea how it will go. I just know I will take the kids out of the house after their final loving, and take them somewhere like McDonalds while she is put to sleep and taken out. Husband will stay with her through it all. This is so hard, knowing that her death is coming so soon.

Let your husband have Ranger see/sniff Ranger after Abbey has passed. It will help Ranger in the transition. I know this all sounds so clinical, but dogs can sense after another has passed. So his adjustment will be easier.

It is hard. Watching them age is hard. I have found, though, that the dog will let you know when it is time. I never had to share that decision with anyone 'though.

While the thought of letting Ranger check out the corpse sounds good, my experience with that was that (OK this was long ago) he peed on her. In another occasion, I took the younger dog along as I drove the corpse to the crematory (150 - 200 miles away). I needed the company and what better company was there? The younger dog knew when the body was taken from the truck bed. There was a noticeable change. It's hard to predict what the outcome will be.

I have found it helpful to tell the dog about the joy s/he's brought me, maybe to remanence a bit with them.

Just the thoughts of them aging and dying hurts.

Abbey always waited for the kids to get home from the bus and she would "walk" them up to the house. Here she is right as the bus was coming up. This is her last time "walking" the kids home.

This pic brought back memories and made me sad but knowing Abbey was truly loved and devoted to her family is a blessing. She is at the bridge now with our other dogs who have passed and although Ranger cannot replace Abbey he will bring you much happiness and joy. hugging

The day she passed, we took her for a final truck ride. She hadn't had a truck ride in maybe 2 years and always loved the wind in her face. She loved the ride. Husband stayed in the truck bed to keep her steady and avoid any painful accidents. When we got home, she had her last treat, which was a bowl of vanilla ice cream. She enjoyed every bit of it.

I fell asleep next to her on the last night.

[Linked Image]

Ranger was super calm this night, and the morning of. I guess he picked up on the high emotions we were experiencing, and would rather lay with us than to play with his toys.

Abbey passed very peacefully. She's been gone for over a week. We buried her at the corner where she always waited for the kids. I am planting a flowering bush there and we got a memorial stone ordered to place over there.

It's been an adjustment. I would come home and go around the corner to see Abbey and find that spot empty. When I go to let Ranger out, I find myself absent-mindedly going to Abbey's spot to encourage her to come outside... and then remember that she's not there anymore. The other day, I saw something brown and hairy on the other side of the coffee table, and got up to check on Abbey, only to realize that was one of my kids moving around. So yeah.... an adjustment. Ranger has done well, but he misses being around another dog. He gets so excited to see another dog he can't contain himself. The kids sleep with one of Abbey's toys and have been missing her.

I appreciate the support y'all have given me over the years with Abbey. She was so difficult in the beginning, and became such an amazing dog. She will always have a place in our hearts, and when we look out the window, we'll see Abbey's Garden, where she was buried, and remember the love and loyalty she has given us.
