I went to the feed store today to browse,

Came home with a new Jolly Ball brand soccer ball for Gypsy.

She LOVES it!

Last year I had to throw her regular soccer ball away because it was so soggy from the winter snow. back then she always wanted me to throw it for her.

Now she knows she can drop it in front of me to kick it, and she knows how to push it around with her nose. LOTS of good exercise for her! If I tell her "you do it" she plays by herself. This soccer ball seems to be her 'thang'! She has gone 4 rounds with it since I brought it home. I think she is a little tired right now LOL And to think that I almost didn't buy it. Bet she sleeps sound tonight!

I will post pics later-right now she is a bit tired grin

Hey that's fantastic! What size did you get? I see them but they always look enormous.

I'm glad it was such a hit!

I honestly couldn't say exactly what size it is other than it's for medium to large dogs. There are no measurements on the packaging. The Bonus is that it was made in the USA. I consider it a rare find smile So few things are made in the USA any more it seems.

I still have not managed a photo of her with it LOL She is Fast! And she is always on the move with it.

However, her legs are always dirty from drooling and my yard has no grass since we have managed to tear it all out so dirty is an understatement. My shoes too, from kicking it once in awhile.

I have noticed something once in awhile that bothers me...

I used to play with a rope toy indoors with G, and she got a sore on her mouth where the rope rubbed her raw.

She likes to chew on small branches now and then, but her gums bleed.

Now with the soccer ball, she seems to have a scab on her nose from pushing it around. She does not let me touch it. I thought it was dirt, but her reluctance to let me touch her nose says it is a dirty scab.

I plan on trying to give her a bath today so will be checking it out closer.

She just seems so sensitive to irritations like this. I have never had a dog this sensitive, so wondering if it's just her, or if it's something else.

They do complicate things when it's "don't touch that!" response.

If it is any consolation I offer the following tale: In Wyoming, BTY 1 would get not quite scabby stuff on her lips at the corners of her mouth. In winter. Finally deduced that it was mild frost bite from chewing or frozen horse apples....

Sounds like your two solutions may be a softer soccer ball and softer rope tug or really limiting the time spent with these oh-so-great activities that keep her busy and out of your hair. Or let her develop an unsightly callous on her nose?

Bev, have you heard about the benefits of German Chamomile tea for wound healing and inflammation of the skin? It's
excellent for all kinds of skin "ouchies." Buy the plain, unblended chamomile tea bags at the grocery store. That way you know you're getting German chamomile that is medicinally active and safe for pets. The English variety, that grows in many gardens is neither. Chill the tea in the fridge, and swab on with a soft cloth or cotton ball as needed. Chamomile is mildly antibiotic and antibacterial, and is wonderfully soothing! It's been used on cats, dogs, horses, sheep, and many humans with good effect. It is not expensive either, so certainly worth trying.

Thank you SeanRescueMom ~

To be honest, I doubt that I would be allowed by her to apply anything to help her. She fights everything good or bad. So when I am trying to do something to help her, it has to be by force, which in turn causes her to shy away from me for a bit.

The other night she scraped her leg and I asked her to shake, but I touched the scrape and she avoided me the rest of the night- wouldn't even come take a treat from me.

Cleaning her ears- she has to be backed into a corner.

Giving her a bath has to be done outside, leashed, and leash held to keep her from scrambling to get away.
Several hours after her bath, I wanted to blow dry her a little and had to leash her with her prong collar on, hold the leash, back her into a corner, just to show her that it is just wind coming out. Never did blow her out...just gave her a demo LOL

She is so determined and very strong, so everything I do is more difficult than the average dog. I worry that doing everything by force is just making her even more reactive.

I am limiting time spent...the soccer ball gets put up. The rope toys got thrown away or hidden. Come to think of it, lots of toys are hidden...the super loud squeaky ones are out of sight. A brand new 2' rope toy- hidden.

I have found that a lot of toys are not so well made any more too.

Oh and the soccer ball...during the winter will be hidden cause if we play with it in the snow, it is bound to break my toe if I kick it LOL

well- the soccer ball is in the shed..

G has a sore on her nose, it was healing and the scab fell off, and then this morning her nose was bleeding again. She also has scrapes on both front legs. Plus during the winter, it would probably break my foot when I kick it LOL

Going to give her some healing time. Other toys are back in circulation.

OH Ms. GB, you problem child!

Bev -
Long ago and far away, I bought stuffed fuzzy "life size" basketballs/soccerballs/footballs for dog toys. They were wonderful. Perhaps you could find something like that for indoors in winter? (& outdoors in good weather)? Easier on her nose, easier on your foot.

Agreed! But she does have lots of good toys in indoors to play with through the winter.

Silly goose was searching high and low for that soccer ball this morning. Had to show her it was in the shed and shut the door quick LOL

Not much to say here but I deal with the same issue with Abbey scraping her nose a lot from play. These days her nose does not heal well if she scrapes it. The scabs/callouses are not noticeable unless you take a nosy dog picture.

Abbey: 12 years old German Shepherd

Suki: 12 years old grumpy Calico

Bella: Ragdoll. Now living with her best cat friend Ty at an oversized cat condo in Crazy Cat Lady City.
