Luc was my first dog, my heart dog, I loved him with every fibre of my being.

He died 2 years ago today at 15.5 years old. He was senile, and having increasing issues with pain and illness that we were unable to address with meds. When he got a bit of a flu he just couldn't recover properly. He was becoming aggressive with Neb and Xerxes and Toby. He needed help sometimes walking - we got a Help Em Up harness, as his laryngeal paralysis had progressed to a polyneuropathy and his rear end didn't work right.

When he was younger, he was the first (recorded) dog to do the 80km La Cloche Silhouette Trail (in Killarney Provincial Park) in two days. He also did a 60k non-stop hike in Algonquin with our hiking overnight (we started at 4pm-ish) and his longest run was 40k. He was always up for adventure but also perfectly happy to snooze on the couch.

He was the best dog in the world, and I miss him.

We let him go on the anniversary of my dad's death, which seemed fitting. Today is 30 years for my dad and 2 for Luc.

Jenn, he was both a noble and stunning boy. I completely understand your feelings for Luc which is just one of the many reasons why we never adopted another dog after Sean passed. We talk about it often though. With Luc being gone only two years I'm sure it's still fresh in your mind. Anniversaries can be difficult. hugging

Thanks SRM. He really was the best.

He was brought into a shelter in Quebec around 6-9 months old, and stayed there for the next three years (no-kill shelter). Some animal rights activists heard about his story and convinced the rescue they worked with in Toronto to pull him and they fostered him until I adopted him a few months later.

So he had a lot to learn about being a dog. I think he enjoyed his life once sprung from the shelter - well, I know he did.

I can understand how you'd feel Sean was irreplaceable.

What a beautiful pup wub So sad that he had to stay in the shelter that long, but happy he ended up with you.

Recently I decided to order some prints of my pups. That required I go through 100's of pictures on the computer. That was hard. I so miss my three amigos. I always thought my Shoshi was my heart dog and she was, but caring for Eli as I did created an amazing bond. I must cry missing him about once a week. I think I will cry for his loss until we meet again.

But Jenn, Luc was an amazing spirit and friend it seems. I'm sure this is a tough anniversary hugging

Thanks Rosa. It's nice to remember the good times, isn't it. I get what you mean about caring for Eli - Luc was such a mess when I first had him (fear-wise), I really had to spend a lot of time building up his confidence, and then, in his senior years, he had those issues - including aspiration pneumonia from the LP (we don't know WHAT he aspirated, but something...as we were going to bed on a long weekend, I said, Luc's breathing awfully rapidly - he had a heart murmur and I tracked his respiratory rate, so I knew it was way abnormal. Off we trundled to the e-vet, who said, oh, he's awake, it's high because he's here and nervous - I insisted on x-rays, and sure enough, pneumonia. We caught so quickly that he was better in two weeks, clear x-rays). We eventually, just before he turned 15, did the laryngeal tie-back surgery, because we knew he wouldn't survive the summer without it, and suffocating to death sounded awful. He was able to do little slow hikes that summer, we would go like 1.5kms on cool days and he was happy as a clam - he loved hiking.

The first weekend I had him home after adopting, we went for a hike in a wilderness area. He was too scared of water to cross beaver dams, so I had to carry him across (until finally he decided he didn't want to be carried and knocked me off the dam and crossed on his own, haha).

He scared a bear off when I was injured on the north shore of Lake Superior. He was a good boy!

It sounds like you two had a very special connection wub Funny how you had to carry him at first, amazing what we do for our pups.

That's a great picture. Looks like he was loving the forest.

What a wonderful time you and Luc had together. It's almost a fairy tale how he moved from three years (!) in a shelter to a champion hiking athlete. The bond you shared came through in your posts and his pics. Dogs are (can be) true blessings!

I do sympathize with your present grief.

Rosa, he was funny. It makes me think of how scared he was of other dogs at first (he had bite marks all over his muzzle; apparently the shelter let the dogs out in groups) - once he tried running away from a toy poodle (must've weighed 4lbs) and the owner said 'Is your dog...scare of MY dog?' and I said 'No, we're just in a hurry!' haha

Thanks Mary Jane. My dad and Luc were in my life for almost the same length of time, just a few months different. So I definitely feel the loss of Luc.

Reminds me of Eli and the time one of those little ankle bitters charged him at the Vet. All 124 lbs of Eli climbed up my back with his front paws on my shoulder and around my neck. One of his back feet was secured but the other one kept slipping off my leg rofl He was like 'Save me Mom!" Poor boy, everyone was laughing at him. He didn't care, he wasn't about to get on the floor with that vicious animal.

Wow.

I am pretty emotional right now.

The shelter I mentioned Luc spending three years in before being pulled by a rescue in Ontario? I had his tag from that shelter, and I kept it on him. It had tremendous sentimental value. Around 3.5 years ago we lost ALL of his tags, including that. I looked everywhere, and was so upset, because I knew he wasn't going to live that much longer.

While I was at the vet with Xerxes today (boo), I got a call from a woman WHO FOUND THEM! She left them by some abandoned tennis courts in my neighbourhood and I picked them up on the way home.

I'm so emotional. This crumbled up bit of metal means the world to me.

I tried posting a pic but it isn't working for some reason.

This is a sad miracle. I remain emotional about our dogs no matter how long. Wolf died in 2011 and I still carry some of his ashes with me all the time in a tiny silver box.

Your plate has really been full these last several days, lady. Do please breathe.

Thanks MJ. It really was. Your connection with Wolf sounds so deep.

I am doing my best to breathe. Of course, now Xerxes is having accidents but his bloodwork and urinalysis is normal, so not sure what next steps are. I dropped off another urine sample this morning, they wanted to see a first pee one to see how dilute it was. He peed on my pillow overnight Tuesday (Xerxes likes to sleep on my pillow with me) and last night while we were waiting to go to bed he had a little leak on it. Thank goodness we have enzyme cleaner spray from when Agis was a puppy haha. Building has a power shut down today, so I can't do laundry, unfortunate, as I am out of clean pillow cases. Sigh.

Thanks Rosa. They really do. I said to Toby I'd love to get it as a tattoo and he said, well, I know we're trying to save money - but I think you should do it.

Though, our old tattoo artist moved away - I think she's moved back, but I don't think she'd be good at that style of tattoo. So I need to find someone who would be good.
