So Xerxes, our beagle, has doggie OCD (he flank sucks - no sores, but yeah - we've tried a few things, including anti-anxiety supplements, but they don't really work). The next medical intervention thing would be an anti-depressant but we and our vet don't want to do that.

This is a newer development (this year?) so I am trying to exercise him more (good for me too! He's my running buddy). I've also been trying to distract him with obedience work when he starts. Last night we started Obedience I (virtual) with the same trainer that Agis went through obedience classes with to hopefully tire out his little doggy mind.

It was chaos. Agis and Neb were out as well (Toby came home at 7, and said he couldn't keep them quiet in the bedroom - UGH). Agis kept doing all the exercises and was pushy about getting treats, when we worked on the 'toss away treat and praise when they return' exercise Xerxes kept looking at me and Agis ate all the treats. I had all three dogs and Timothy (the cat) trying to do the exercises. Jess, our trainer, was laughing - it was funny, but I was also pissed off at Toby for not getting the other two out of the way.

Didn’t feed the boys at 7 (when class started - I wanted Xerxes to be a bit hungry to work for food). Agis barked, but then, we thought he was excited (he'll bark after his 7pm feeding because he likes to go out afterwards - but he didn't have a 7pm feeding last night). Fast forward to 30 minutes after class, and I was like ‘Yikes, someone farted’. No, SOMEONE (looked like Agis's poops who normally would go out during the time of Xerxes’s class, but he didn’t bark after it was all done) pooped on the floor on the rug - easy to pick up at least. Then someone (Xerxes? But no treats, a LOT of foam and one piece of kibble) puked all over Toby’s seat on the couch. And the big bowl of water got knocked over during training.

After class, Xerxes was so hyped up his OCD-behaviour was outta control, and he was so excited he kept mounting Agis who, understandably, did not appreciates that about him!

Hoping next week is a bit calmer...

I think that it's terrific that you are using training for calming. I also think it's amazing that you manage 3 dogs and some number of cats and remain sane.

However...... the various emissions and excretions are less desirable-but you still retain your sense of humor. I think it's astounding.

Thanks MJ.

Once Toby and I got over being grumpy with each other, I could see the humour...plus, it was HIS spot on the couch that got puked on wink

Agis was the worst when Xerxes and I were working on 'touch' because he'd shove Xerxes out of the way and do it. Apparently I need to go back to basics with Agis as after awhile he'd break his downs to come 'demonstrate' the right way to do stuff.

(Two cats! The cats are fine, however, I always say, three dogs is the worst, but this is our third time having three dogs...so...)

I read this the other day and got to say you're doing an amazing job with your pups. It's really hard training one and 'putting the others away'. I struggle with that all the time. But you're doing great. It can't be easy with all those distractions.

Jenn,
You are up to more challenges than I am. When I train, the dog not being worked is put up. That's either tethered or crated (crated may mean "in the house" or "in the truck" or "in the actual crate" My dogs would find it too confusing to be loose when I am working one -- it might work if I had totally different commands for each dog - but this handler is lazy and doesn't do that.

I think it was our last AKC show where I didn't get set up in time to exercise the dogs separately first. The show order got reversed from what we normally did. The young dog ended up crated while I worked the other in the ring. Uncharacteristically, the younger dog barked objections throughout the older dog's ring time. Obviously, a disaster as the older dog did very badly. I don't recall how the younger dog worked. But it was a cluster for us....

I haven't been putting dogs up because they're so excited that SOMEBODY is getting treats that they are beside themselves and noisy, and, well, apartment. It was okay when I was training Agis, but Agis is SO pushy when I'm working with Xerxes.

I think for next week I'll give Neb and Agis frozen kongs and put them separately in their rooms. Fingers crossed!!!!

Jenn,
I forget you are doing this in an apartment. You ARE up to more challenges than I am!

Well, I AM being pretty relaxed at how well Xerxes does - it's more for fun with him. Agis is big enough that I had manner goals.

I have been having issues with Xerxes breaking sits/downs - he follows me around - the other forum had some suggestions that are helping, but we're still way behind on class. So I dunno if I'll keep it up or not. I have the homework of all the weeks so I could always use that and just do self-directed.
