So this is just the update on handler failure(s) AKA BTY 2. Maybe your laugh for the day.

OK, maybe Wednesday night or so we get out and do just a little bit of work. Trying to get the retrieve back. This is not a dog that should get anything more than maybe one day of "rest." But it's been hot. Very hot. Too hot. (OK you got that.)

So this is after our workout of dumbbell is fun and OMG there's your favorite! A send out! whoo hoo and now it's play time.

About the first reward toy toss, heading back towards the handler with speed and happiness....
Whoa! What's this? An abrupt 90 degree turn to the left, the toy dropped, and the substitute reward obtained.

No aus response. No leave it response. No nothing worked - all I saw was the rear feet of a small rabbit - gulp gulp gulp....

A day or two later on our free walk (this is around about 6 acres of my property) two dogs paying too much attention to something. This time I manage to retrieve a good part of another young rabbit before it is unauthorized dog food. The known total this year is 1.25 young bunnies and .75 of a mature rabbit (got 1 hind quarter of that one retrieved biy human).

I am less interesting than a dead rabbit, far less interesting in a live rabbit if the dog is off lead. We need work with the target species. I know what I need to do but I so want the darned things chased out of here. I don't know what's been doing them in. I haven't heard the owls or coyotes or seen hawks around lately. It might be a neighbor's young cat who hasn't got the word just yet (aka hasn't been treed.)

On the upside - she wasn't but 3/4 dud at training today. She's still where she should have been 5 years ago. But she's been much worse. Now there's the off chance that she'll suddenly decide to be on it. Once in a while that happens. I can hope that it happens close to a trial date. I can hope for a lot of stuff, like that winning lottery ticket magically showing up in my wallet.

Somebody sometime advised me to try to be more interesting than dog urine-it was good advice.

I do really enjoy reading your posts-not that I can say anything about training. For months and months, Nova's favorite game was find the toy. Now she finds it and leaves it-like she's too bored to continue to bring it to me.

Changing the subject-what's going on with weather in Oregon?

MJ

Hot. High nineties where I am (central Oregon, east of the Cascade Mtns.). Set to be high 80s later in the week.

The irony with Ms. "Hey, look a squirrel!" was ironic because the detour was from reward behavior as chase the reward, bring it back to chase again... There's no way I can compete with fresh (relatively fresh anyway) rabbit even with the best toys in hand.

Reminded me of one of my road trips with the three Amigos (Shiloh, Shoshi and Eli). We had stopped to check out a ghost town in Montana. I use to have a belt that went around my waist that held all three leashes and that's the way we walked.

Well we were checking out this old town when all the sudden bunnies appeared everywhere and the pups were off!!!! I remember thinking 'feet don't fail me now!' and I ran as fast as I could keep pace with the dogs. Thankfully, they turned a corner and I was able to grab the corner of the building and held on for dear life. Boy did they get a lecture for that one!

What wonderful memories I have.
