Agis has been limping since Wednesday night. At first we thought he had something in his foot and fooled around with it and he stopped limping. Great, we thought, we got it.

Thursday we didn't play fetch with him in the morning like we usually do. There's a big field/baseball diamond across the street so he has plenty of space to run (normally). Thursday afternoon he starts limping again. It stops then starts again.

The vet had emailed me to see how he was doing after eating some of the Kuranda PVC surround, so I responded and said, hey, he's limping, we're going to rest him and see how he does. Thursday and Friday he was good about not playing/running around.

Today though - man he wants to play. He's still limping a bit, but as he moves, he stops limping. We've pretty well isolated his pain response to in his foot. Neither of us remembers stepping on him, so we're thinking he did something in a quick cornering while playing fetch. I'd think it was broken except it seems to loosen up with movement, so a sprain?

What can I do with him to help keep him occupied? I've done some proofing of training. I'd hide food or give him a kong with treats but we have the other two and Neb resource guards food from dogs (not us) so that's a recipe for disaster.

Toby took him for a walk but I feel like that's a bad idea too. Help! We do have one of those treat hiding toys which despite Neb being food aggressive kind of works - Neb lifts up the pegs hiding the food and wanders off with them while Agis waits and then eats the food hammer

It's hard when you have to keep one dog quiet in a multi dog household. Can you feel really well up into the toes to make sure there's nothing stuck up there? Shoshi got mud stuck up deep in her feet once and I had a heck of a time figuring out what was wrong. Does Agis have a crate you can put him in? Otherwise it sounds like your doing all you can right now.

Thanks Rosa. We've checked the toes as much as possible - Agis really doesn't want us near them. Nothing that looks funny.

Agis has a crate, but he pees all over himself when he's put in there. He stays in the second bedroom as his 'crate' which works when we're out but.

Toby took him for another walk. I told him to cut that out. Agis is now sleeping at least.

I think perhaps I should look up some things to teach him that are brand new and will tire him out mentally.

Since Neb resource guards food from dogs can you take Agis outside and hide the treats in his toys/kong there? Sorry to hear he's having trouble limping. If it's still bothering him after the weekend will you call the vet back?

Thanks SRM.

Our vet is closed weekends - giving staff more work-life balance (which I fully support, but man that's a pain now).

I didn't see if he limped first thing this morning, as I got ready quick and then started baking (meeting my mom for 'brunch'). By the time I was watching him he was fine (fingers crossed that's how he woke up too).

But I plan to call the vet first thing tomorrow.

We can put Agis in his room (gated) with a kong. Eventually he'll get upset, but hopefully that'll be something we can do. He's been relatively quieter yesterday afternoon after I posted this - though Toby took him to the park just to sit - it is across the street, so I suppose that's okay, but I also was like 'He's supposed to stay quiet!!!' Husbands, I tell ya.

Are you sure it's his toes? Have you checked his elbow and shoulder for any reactions to pain?

Some times pups get hurt playing. Frankly I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. If there's no clear signs of pain (like you touch somewhere and he yelps) I think the best thing you can do is to have the pet rest. Love that you have a little room for him) I'd want him to rest so I wouldn't worry about how he can occupy himself. I know this is usually hardest on us. It's hard not responding to their initial whines. But they'll settle and then get the rest their bodies need.

As far as walking, if he's limping then I wouldn't take him for a walk.

I so hope he's feeling better soon. Time to retrain Toby rofl

Yes, we'd checked around his joints - pressing, manipulating/moving - no reaction. He's a bit foot sensitive, but that was still the only area that got a reaction

Whatever it was, he's not limped since Saturday. He's nice and mobile again though we're going to keep him away from fetch at least until the end of the week.

What a relief.
