So Agis likes the cats, especially Timothy. He grooms him, brings Timothy his toys (which Timothy does not appreciate).

They are fed in the kitchen together and Agis leaves Timothy alone there.

However, outside of their meals, Agis seems to have started resource guarding from Timothy. Cordelia (our other cat) pukes when she eats too fast sometimes (we're now breaking their food to four meals a day to try to address this). Sunday Cordelia puked in the second bedroom while I was brushing my teeth. It's gated (it's Agis's 'room' when we're out) but there is a little cat door. Timothy and Agis both took off in an attempt to eat it (because they are gross). Outside of the room, Agis jumped on Timothy with a little growl/bark. Timothy's back was wet, but nothing worse. I wonder if because Agis sees the second bedroom as 'his' room?

I gave Agis what I hoped was a 'Come to Jesus' correction and he sulked for a good 45 minutes - but Monday as I was training him, Timothy was hanging around (as were Neb and Xerxes, they all get treats at the end). Agis jumped at Timothy and air-snapped. I corrected him again, but clearly my corrections aren't working.

I then fed Timothy a bunch of the training treats while Agis watched. And later had them all do sits and gave them treats in rounds, Timothy first. I've done similar today, and even when I'm working more specifically with Agis, no issues.

I booked a virtual consultation with Agis's obedience trainer for tomorrow. The corrections aren't working, and while Agis doesn't seem to resent them, it's not my ideal relationship with a dog.

He's a good boy though. I was crying after lunch today (Toby and I had a minor disagreement, but I've been on edge over a bunch of stuff, so it pushed me over) and he ran over to the dining table where I work and put his front paws on my shoulders and licked my face. He was obviously concerned.

I'll let everyone know what his trainer says.

Well during the consultation Agis was repeatedly groom Timothy and bringing him toys. That's the thing about this.

The trainer and I agree it's resource guarding - she's going to send me a training plan and resources. We both wondered if the cat puke in the second bedroom is that Timothy views that room as 'his' room. And that perhaps the snapping during training on Monday was just because he was unsettled from the day before (or perhaps he was unsettled because my correction sucked? Dunno).

Anyways, we'll have another consult in a couple of weeks. I went with her because she's currently training obedience II with us, and she led obedience I, so she knows Agis well.

Sorry, that AGIS views the second bedroom as his room. Not Timothy.

I have nothing to offer-but I do enjoy hearing about your menagerie. It's really nice to have an on-call trainer.

good luck!

Thanks MJ!

I just got the training plan and I think we have some good ideas - and she likes that I 'work' with all the dogs and Timothy together (Timothy only really knows sit and even then I suspect he just coincidentally sits). Says to keep that up, so Agis learns that he still gets good things when the others are around.

Jenn, sorry I just saw your post today. I know we're both on a cat board and wonder if you posted this question over there? Many of the members, including myself, have both dogs and cats and firsthand experience. When we had Sean, granted it was awhile ago, he got along great with one of our cats but like Agis was territorial with another. The cat he got along great with was a no-nonsense, full of spunk and extremely feisty gal. She ruled the roost. grin Maybe Agis is showing a bit of an alpha side over Timothy. When Agis did his bark/growl at Timothy and got his back wet or the air snap when you were training, what did Timothy do, how did he react?

I didn't - posting it there is a good idea SRM. I've had cats the whole time I've had dogs and all coexisted peacefully (except for Teagan; we worked with a behaviourist and settled on crate and rotate (or room and rotate for the cats).

Timothy held his ground with the air snap. With the wet back I think he did but he was clearly freaked out - I was focused on getting Agis away from him I honestly wasn't paying a lot of attention. But he was still there after I corrected Agis.

Agis will chase our youngest (she runs, nothing to do with him) but we can call him off. Timothy he really likes, he regularly grooms him, like I said, brings him his toys, sleeps near him. That's why it was such a shock.

I'm pretty sure it's resource guarding...I don't THINK Agis would show dominance over another species, but I might be wrong.

We just had a wee good news - Cordelia ran from the kitchen to the second bedroom - Agis, Timothy, and Xerxes all thought it was to puke and chased after her - Neb could give a care. She DIDN'T puke, so it's not an exact replication, but Agis was totally relaxed around Timothy and didn't guard at all.

Thanks DE! I sure hope so. He's been perfectly neutral around Timothy for almost two weeks now (I think) so that's good.
