So Neb has been intermittently (every 1, 1.5 weeks) throwing up bile - often in the morning, but in recent weeks, he's thrown up in the evening. We switched food in January to Pro Plan - and honestly we're not sure if this was happening beforehand or not.
Toby was laid off in December, so I've been hoping for this to treat itself. He's back at work, and even though we're behind, he threw up again last night and I thought, okay, this can't wait until his annual in April. So we're booked to go in tomorrow.
I'm hoping we can just get away with bloodwork/x-rays. It's going to be costly though.
We wondered if it was age related. He's 13 next month. But from googling I don't think that's it.

Oh Jenn, I'm so sorry to hear of this I hope and pray it's nothing big and can be fixed without costing a lot. This is just such difficult times. Please update us.

Thanks Rosa.
Toby and I were talking and we realized we'd switched to Pro Plan (at vet tech's suggestion - it's been an ongoing conversation) last fall/November after Agis's annual. It definitely hasn't been going on longer than that. So we are going to try switching food back to Acana (with evil legumes and all) and hope that that helps.
I am still going to take him in tomorrow morning though, just to check in with the vet. But I am thinking this is it.
I have been all upset today with worry about Neb. So I hope this is simple.

My experience with an older dog vomiting bile like that ended up being kidney problems. Hope it's not that for Neb.

Well, I felt a bit silly. They said the first step would be to do more smaller feedings throughout the day (3-4x) and give him pepcid. If it still continues, then we'll move to testing.
I think we WILL change food too. At least, I'd like to.

Just saw this-all the best for Neb. With my limited experience, I also vote for the change in food. We kept Chewy in business trying kibbles for different dogs-with Nova it worked out to the original kibble she ate at her breeder . Also, when Mars went through the night time bile production-we added a midnight snack of yoghurt that he enjoyed. I hope I'm so late here that you have already fixed the problem, MJ

Thanks MJ. We're going to pick up more Acana tomorrow and just toss the pro plan (it's emptied into a bin or we'd donate it). Not too much left of it in any event.
We're going to add a pre-bed snack and hope it works well. And a midday/mid-afternoon feeding too. Basically put the two meals into four for all of them.
Toby'll pick up the pepcid too - he has tomorrow off.
It does strike me as odd this suddenly coming on - unless it is the food - or, older dogs need more frequent meals?

And in other good news, our youngest cat hasn't eaten going on a day and a half. She didn't eat last night's dinner, breakfast this morning, and is not showing a lot of interest in tonight's meal (Toby even left out some dog kibble for her, she loves it). So if that's not eaten by tomorrow morning, calling the vet. AUGH!

We're pretty good about getting to the bile - and she's never shown any interest. Neb has been doing this for months. I think/hope it's unrelated. She ate some temptations and 7g of kibble last night (we gave her 21g). Have a call into the vet.

We're going to pick up more Acana tomorrow and just toss the pro plan You're lucky because you can get Acana from the Canadian manufacturer. When they built a manufacturing facility in Kentucky they changed the Acana formula here. The quality of the ingredients went down and some vets reported dogs having digestive problems. I hope your youngest cat's appetite has improved and you won't need to contact your vet.

I think the Canadian stuff is still good quality. Toby ended up not wanting to toss the Pro Plan so he got a small bag of Acana just for Neb and we'll get a big bag when the bin is empty.
Cautiously optimistic with Cordelia...she got fluids at our vet in the late afternoon and has eaten some more, though it's still not all her food. We have a vet tech appointment for bloodwork so if the fluids don't help, there's that.

Cordelia ate ALL of her food last night! Happy dance!
Neb's poops are lighter coloured than normal, and formed but softer. This morning was his first meal of Acana so we'll see how that helps. (I doubt it's related as the bile stuff has been happening for months)

I think we'll get down to a couple of cats and one dog at some point (we said that after Luc passed, and look at us now!). The dogs can be a real handful, even though we love them.
Last night's training session with Agis tired him right out though - some tough new movements (I got frustrated, he thought things were great) and playing retrieve/two balls (Agis values one ball above all others though, so that didn't go that well - luckily he's okay about bringing it back and dropping it). He was panting by the end of the hour.

My girl Gypsy is 2.5 now and has always vomited bile in the morning unless she gets 3 meals a day. She gets about 3/4c in the morning, a big meal consisting of The Honest Kitchen dehydrated food and about 3/4c dry mixed into it in the afternoon, and a smaller meal of about 2/2 cup with a 5.5oz box of THK stew at night. If I skip any of them, she vomits bile the next morning. Every great once in awhile, she won't eat the dry morning meal so it is used in the afternoon meal, but that is rare. And she has been like this from day one at 8 weeks old. I am trying to eliminate the evening meal by feeding later in the afternoon now. Will see how she handles it. I figure she weighs about 80lbs. She still has a nice waistline, unlike myself
