If he's going out 15-20xs a day then it sounds like he's still mobile for the most part. I get it, the legs cross, they fall, etc. but that's a lot of getting up and down and going out each day. I think that's good. It sounds like he's to the point where he can still tell somewhat that he has to go so there's still that small amount of awareness still going on. But other than that it's just the poop passing.

The problem is we've spent their lifetime telling them to go potty outside. They learned that and we celebrated. When they did make mistakes we were quick to correct them so that they knew going potty in the house was bad. So how else can Loki feel than to feel bad when he's gone in the house?? With Eli I had to retrain him that it was ok to go poop in the house. I made a point to be cheerful about it and how happy I was that he had a poo poo. I make light of it as much as I could. I needed him to know it was ok so I needed to teach him that.

Eli would go in his sleep all the time. I just made it a habit to check him from time to time as he slept. Sometimes he's just pass gas but I'd check as you never knew.

I'm not saying this is easy at all. Its heartbreaking, but I'm thinking your doing a great job.

You're doing great with him. Luc would poop inside too at the end, and we did the same - kept the bucket and mop handy. Loki is so lucky to have someone who gives him such love.

Update. Loki is getting real weak in the back end. He has also started peeing in his sleep.
We took him in to the vet and sure enough, he had a bladder infection. The antibiotics helped, but now he is incontinent.
We take him out more often to pee and use puppy pads under a sheet on his bed. He's on meds to help control the peeing, but with all that he still having accidents.
The day before yesterday, he had super runny diarrhea. It was really bad yesterday, but the meds started kicking in and he's doing better.
Today, for the first time in a long time, he spent the day outside with us. When I went to the barn, I walked slowly and stopped so he could have a rest.
When we got back, instead of wanting in the house, he wanted to stay with us.
He laid around watching me paint the chicken coop trim. Went for a short walk with Wayne in the bush when he went to look the a roost pole.
He didnt come in the house until we finished for the day.

Just the other day we were discussing when we should help him to the bridge, but his rallying really surprised us.
I just love this old gentleman.

Loki looks amazing. I hope you have many, many more happy days like this.

I can't begin to try to remember how many times I thought it was time with Eli and each time he'd perk up.

Be very consistent with his diet to keep those stools firm, and try to keep the potty pads under him as he rests.

And most of all, enjoy every minute he's with you.

What a handsome dog!

Barker the elder the first developed these issues in old age. However, she would position herself over the pee pad in bed. .. maybe Loki will figure it out, too?

Sandra, I just saw this. Loki is so impressive. It's just awe-inspiring how resilient these guys can be in the right hands.

Loki shows us the dignity of age and the strength of love.
