I have a galvanized tub in the front that has two solar fountains in it. I like the bubbly noise but I also let the pups drink from it when we're out there. I noticed there's algae growing at the bottom inside the tub and am wondering if its safe for my pups to drink out of it? I don't want to take any chances.

I'm keeping the water clean. The fountains keep the water moving so I shouldn't have problems with mosquito's but I do check daily for any larvae. She I scrub the algae out?

I'm not familiar with algae but I think it would be a good idea to go ahead and scrub them out.

Since you don't know what type of algae and some are toxic, I'd scrub it out.

Yes if you let the dogs drink from it. The horse trough here gets scrubbed every second or third fill in summer, less in winter. There's no scrubbing the pond but I discourage "sampling" by the dogs. At least that's what I'd do.

Thanks for the feedback. I will keep it scrubbed out and will also provide a seperate water bowl and encourage them to drink from that. I was concerned yesterday when I noticed how much algae was growing and I don't want to take chances with the pups. Thanks much!!!!

Rosa,
Another thing you may want to consider. I know you said that these are fountains with moving water, but another way to help control mosquitoes is a product called BTI.
Information on BTI

It is safe to put in any water source, will not harm birds and other wildlife, it's a pretty specific target for mosquitoes and black flies. It won't hurt the dogs if they drink the water. It won't control the algae growth, but is a safe way to control the mosquito population. We've been using it up here at our house. DH puts a few small containers around the house perimeter and various places in the yard and refills them every so often. I think it has helped with our mosquito population this year compared to last year and considering we are 300 yards or so from a river and our neighbor closer to the river has a lot more mosquitoes around his yard.

Thanks Johanna, I'm heading to Amazon now. I'd love to have something to add to the water.

Algea.. I ran across info while reading some horse stuff. I still like to read about horses even though I don't have horses any more.

Thanks Val, that was an interesting article. I went to buy the mosquito stuff Johanna mentioned but it sure seemed pricey. I want to look around on line some before I actually purchase it.

What I've done is set up a bowl in front of the big tub which will encourage the pups to just drink from the bowl which I'll change daily. I need to have the tub in the sun so that the solar fountains will work.

Rosa - Walmart may have it. Here is a 30 ounce container. You don't need very much at a time . We still have some from a similar bottle that we bought 2 years ago. And I see the same size available for 14.99 on Amazon. A little bit seems to go a long way.
