Neb (12 years) is apparently the glue that hold the pack together.

I hadn't thought of same-sex aggression when we adopted Agis, because we'd had three males before (Luc, Neb, Xerxes) and that was fine (Luc got more "aggressive" when he got senile, but that was something else, and directed at Toby too...not me though, go figure). Then Rottie folk went 'Uh oh' and told me about same sex aggression in the breed, and I thought, oh goodness, what have we done. I also always thought the issues were with females only.

With that said, Nebuchadnezzar is 12, Xerxes is 4.5ish, and Agis is 1 - so it's a mix of ages and personalities, which likely helps. They all seem to mesh quite well and that's probably one reason why. Plus Agis was neutered before we adopted him, likely around 3 months old or a bit earlier.

But interestingly - I will take Agis out on his own for exercise - Xerxes might bay twice, then he's quiet. Xerxes had his annual this afternoon, so I left behind Agis and Nebbers - not a peep.

But take NEB out and leave the other two - all holy hell breaks loose. He is the glue that holds the pack together, heh. The elder statesman.

I've had a couple of males before who never had any same sex aggression. One was a GSD mix and he was the boss. The other was an Aussie with a very submissive personality. They were only a couple of years apart.

I've also had 2 female GSDs with no problems. When we got the second female, Rica was about 7 years old and we took her to meet the puppy at the breeders house. If we had seen any problems I don't think we would have taken Aodhán. Between the 2 of them, Rica had a more dominant personality and Aodhán' personality was more submissive. I think personalities have a lot to do with the same sex aggression tendencies.

Neb is very confident, Xerxes far more submissive and hesitant. Agis doesn't always know when to leave well enough alone, but that seems to happen generally WHEN we're around (based on noise when we're outside...Neb keens when Agis tries to play with him). They seem happy enough together, but they are all very different (and being neutered so young, I don't really expect Agis to get bolshie) and different ages which I thinks makes all the difference in the world.

I should say, the holy hell that breaks loose when Neb isn't there isn't aggression, it's an outbreak of sadness and loss that Neb is missing from the crew.
