Agis is recovering from diarrhea (as Neb threw up/had soft poops earlier in the week, I think they've got a bug). Last night it was shooting out of him completely water-y.

This morning it was soft, but we were able to pick it up.

Fasting him today. Then we'll introduce him to white rice (which we don't have; we have a mix of white/brown/red/black) and the vet suggested boiled chicken or beef (which I have never done when reintroducing food, but I've also never had a dog with diarrhea that bad).

We do not have chicken breasts (we do have a full marinated chicken; probably not the best option) or some stewing beef.

How does one boil chicken? I'm vegetarian but when I cook chicken for my husband I use the oven. Boiled chicken sounds disgusting! I was thinking to boil the stewing beef, as I think I'll easier be able to tell that it's done. Can I just fry the beef in a pan (I do that before I add the stuff for stew)? Is there some particular magic to having boiled it?

OK if the chicken is still uncooked, slice off a bit of it, rinse off the marinade, plop it in the pot as you cook the rice. What it does is flavor the rice. If the chicken is cooked, well, do the same thing..... Remember: This is not for you but for the dog. nono It is supposed to be bland....

The idea for white rice is no hulls = more uh "binding" for the gut.

Good luck, hope it helps (both the luck and the rice with boiled chicken) Remember that lots of what dogs find tasty we usually don't. ... I mean there's some overlap in that they will eat almost anything we do but we're just a bit pickier ...

Oh we do still have some cooked chicken (I've been slicing off bits for Toby's salads). I'll do that instead of cooking a whole chicken - especially as I just made stew for Toby and there's only so much meat he can at once. And I'll throw it in withe rice. That makes a lot of sense.

Like white bread, binding! (When Neb ate cans our vet initially suggested giving him wonder bread to bind on and try to pass the remainder...FYI, dogs can smell cat food from unopened cans on a dining room table that you don't think he can reach, plus, the cans were sealed...Neb is a troublemaker!)

Thanks so much! I was supposed to visit my mom in a park tomorrow (distanced) but I'm going to go next weekend so that I can give Agis small meals tomorrow and take him out if necessary. Don't really want to come home to a mess.

(I was talking to my mom on speaker phone, and was saying last night Agis's diarrhea was like turning a tap on high...Toby said, it was like when I had a colonoscopy...heh)

If at some point you actually have to boil some chicken, just put it in a pot of boiling water and cook until it starts to fall apart. It's done. If it's something like legs and thighs, cook it until it starts to fall off the bones. It's done and is usually really tender. No seasonings - it will be bland. Add seasonings and it makes a pretty good pulled chicken.

Perfect, thanks Johanna. That's very helpful. Toby's out getting white rice and some other odds and ends, so I've asked him to pick up a chicken breast too, as all the meaty bits have been picked off the current cooked marinated chicken. I cut the easiest parts off first for Toby's salad!

When cooking the chicken if it has skin I try to pull off as much as possible, fat doesn't fit in the bland gut healing diet. What you are doing with the bland is healing the gut. I wish I would have read this sooner I would have told you to have Toby get some Probioitics. When dogs or humans get diarrhea the gut gets stripped of the good gut flora.

Oh we have probiotics! Good call Val. I'll add some tomorrow to his breakfast.

Toby did pick up some chicken breasts and I told him without skin (great minds smile ). I have to admit, when I've fasted dogs before, I've just reintroduced using rice only - but his gut was so upset I want to do a longer re-introduction.

I have over the years found that with a lot of dogs reintroducing food slow is better. Glad you have some Probiotics. Let us know how things go, I mean progress.

I've used boiled beef with rice for Sean a few times and it worked like a charm. He loved it and it did the trick. Good luck, hope Agis feels better soon. crossedfingers

Thanks Val and SRM. He didn't poop when I took him out this afternoon (but then hasn't eaten since 8:30 last night) so I suppose that's something. Hopefully the fasting does a good reset.

Ugh, Neb threw up bile last night (in the middle of the night) and Agis vomited grass this morning. I think both of those are due to fasting (if one dog has to fast, they all do). I gave them small amounts of kibble this morning (1/4 of their general morning food) and will give them small feedings as I do Agis. As I hadn't boiled the chicken or made rice last night, I just gave Agis a few spoonfuls of pumpkin this morning and he'll get the chicken and rice later - both are currently being made. The chicken is white, but as it was a wee bit frozen I decided to boil it a bit longer it'll be 25 min all told. That's how long I put it in the oven for.

Smells good, if I do say so myself (but as a vegetarian, what do I know haha)

Oh and Agis had a fairly normal poop last night and a normal one this morning. With blue fabric though - I have no idea where that came from!

Agis only pooped yesterday morning, nothing the rest of the day. Normal (if smaller) poop this morning. Fed kibble today, but gave 1/2 regular amount and will give the rest midday. Probably do the same with the nighttime meal.

Thanks Rosa! Everyone seems normal (for now, don't want to jinx it) - Agis had a great poop this morning! And got a regular amount of kibble yesterday, albeit spread over 3 meals rather than two.

I meant to respond to this the other night *facepalm*
Hope they're still doing better. Seeing as there wasn't a new post in 2 days, I'll take it that they are doing better!
