We are heartbroken to tell everyone that we had to say goodbye to Heidi on Saturday. The vet told us that she probably had DM or a tumor on her spine and nothing more could be done. A week ago, she started going downhill pretty quickly and wasn’t able to move her front or back legs anymore, and was in a lot of discomfort. Her tremors and the twitching of her leg were also getting worse. We had a mobile vet come to the house. He was very kind and gentle with her and she went very peacefully.

We adopted Heidi in 2007 from a German shepherd rescue group. From the very beginning, she was not an easy dog, which is one of the reasons I found and joined this forum (back when it was the other group). She was very fearful (especially of men), very dog reactive, and had a huge prey drive. We honestly didn't think we were up to the challenge, but we got very attached to her and were determined to make it work. So, we ended up going to training classes, several reactive dog workshops, read a ton of books, and eventually, she improved to the point that she was actually able to go to doggy daycare, where they referred to her as a "model citizen," much to our amazement! She was SO attached to me, right from the start. She followed me everywhere. She was also overly protective of me. It took over a year for poor Dave to win her over. For the longest time, she wanted nothing to do with him and sometimes even growled at him if he tried to get too affectionate with her. But in time, she grew to love him too.

We've had so many adventures and fun times with her: Fort Funston and Point Isabel with the friends we'd met through the forum; a train ride through the redwoods and all sorts of interesting walks with our local GSD meetup group; camping; wine tasting—we took her almost everywhere with us. And everywhere we went, people would comment on how pretty she was and ask how old our "puppy" was (even when she was 10+ years old!) In the early years, she'd bark ferociously at anyone who wanted to pet her (she didn't trust many people), but in her senior years, she was far more mellow and let just about anyone approach and pet her.

She was so smart. We taught her a ton of tricks. She would also go into her crate when she would see me getting ready to go out. She loved to do "Heidi training" every night after dinner. I've never had a dog who stared at me like she did. She would just gaze into my eyes so intently like she was trying to read my mind.

She’s been a huge and ever present part of our lives for such a long time (13 years), and the last couple of years she never wanted to let me out of her sight. We’re very lucky that she reached the age of 15, which is extremely old for a large dog, let alone a German shepherd. We feel so lost right now. Everything reminds us of her. She was a handful, but such a good and sweet girl who brought us much joy and laughter. Rest In Peace, little Heidi, our little fur girl.

Thank you to everyone here for the support and advice when we've needed it, over so many years. It's been very much appreciated

Karin & Dave,
What a great life you offered Ms. Heidi. Even great memories can hurt at a time like this. I'm so sorry she didn't live even longer.

My heart goes out to you on the loss of your sweet girl. 15 yrs. old is a long time for a GSD but it's never enough, is it? You gave her the home she deserved and she paid you back with her unconditional love. RIP Miss Heidi. angel

My heart goes out to you both. What a beautiful long life you were able to give her. I remember whrn you first got her. And i recall that besutiful picture of you both walking down the lane together.
Heidi was a real one of a kind dog that needed you as much as you needed her. Its so fortunate you found each other.
Run free dear Heidi. gsdhalo

Your heart must be very big to hold a German shepherd for 15 years. Well, I guess Heidi made her own place.

Your work to make her comfortable in the wide world is a lesson for everybody.

thank you for letting us in and please accept my deepest sympathy,

Mary Jane

A wonderful tribute to such a special girl. They leave such a big hole in our hearts - it was a pleasure to meet her way back when on my first trip to Ft Funston with Indy and Max.
