Im sorry if this isnt the right spot on the forum. Please move if necessary.

Awhile back i wrote about Loki being diagnosed with DM.
I have a question.
How do you know when hes ready?

His behaviour has changed a little. Hes always been my boy but lately hes getting very clingy.
I cant leave the room more than a few minutes and.he struggles up to follow. He acts confused sometimes. It doesnt last long
Its more like he just doesnt know what to do with himself.
His bowel problems havent changed. He even makes it out the door sometimes. Other times hes just unaware.
Ive broken his meals down to 3xs a day so that the gabapentin doesnt bother him.

Just recently he's having trouble standing. His back legs just give out on him. His coordination is bad and he trips over his own feet.
No matter what is going on he is always panting. At night in between he gives a soft cry. I dont know if its from heat or pain. The only time he stops is when hes sleeping.

Im lost at this point. Im not ready to let him go, but i dont know if he is suffering and I'm prolonging his pain. frown

Sandra,

I am terribly sorry that you and Loki are at this stage. There are quality of life questionnaires you can use and I can post links if you like.

One thing struck me in your post: you did not mention anything that Loki has enjoyed that he still enjoys. Does he play at all? Does he enjoy his meals? Does he enjoy being with you?

I think the quality of life guides try to balance the remaining pleasure in life with the cost of pain.

please, please take care. This is so tough.

Mary Jane

Thanks for your reply MJ.
Loki loves car rides. If we go out to go somewhere he will follow he wants his car ride.
He loves his toys buy hasnt played with anything in the past couple of weeks.
He will still try to give a little hop turn that he does when he is really happy when we go for a walk. But its more of an old man gesture these days. The mind is willing but the body is weak.
We have an appointment at 4:30 today. Its not with our regular vet but i do know she is good.
Im thi king of getting them to take an xray and see if his heart is okay. Im also suspisious of cancer just because it took out Lacy, Larka and was a catalysis of Pallas death.

If Loki has DM, there should be no pain as there is none with that. We had a couple of dogs who had DM and it is a very tough choice to make to determine when it is time! In both of our dogs, we made the decision based on their ability to move around. Once they showed some real difficulty in even walking then that kind of made up our mind. VERY tough as esp. the last one in 2016. he actually seemed surprised as he lost control of his back legs and it grew worse and worse in a very short period of time. You have our great sympathy! the major consideration, no matter how much you will miss him, has to be for the dog!

Yes, thats the bottom line right there. Its always about Loki.

From everything I've read so far. There must be an underlyjng problem.
We have a vet appointment later today. We will know more the .
Thank you Codmaster for your reply.

Let us know what comes out of today's appointment.

It's such a hard decision to make. I hope you can find some guidance today at the vet - worth talking with them about too.

I'm so sorry that you and Loki are going through this, Sandra. Heidi was the same way about not wanting to let me out of her sight. If I was gone too long, she'd try and get up and then immediately fall down. Dave had to take her outside to go potty because I couldn't hold up her entire weight with the Help Em Up harness.

It's a heartbreaking disease because even though their body is failing, their mind and spirit are still the same as always. We had an extremely hard time letting Heidi go, but she couldn't get up at all and couldn't even lay down without falling over. We had to prop her up with rolled up towels and pillows. She still had a great appetite though and she still wanted to do her nightly training (hugely modified to do from laying down). But she was panting a lot, seemed uncomfortable and frustrated, and was also having increasing tremors and one of her rear legs kept kicking out involuntarily. I could see in her eyes that she wasn't happy and it was time.

I don't have any advice for you, but wanted to know that my thoughts are with you both and that I'm so sad that this is happening. With Heidi, she seemed to go downhill very quickly at the end. One day she only needed help with her hindquarters to go outside and the next, her whole body was like dead weight. I know that Dave would have wanted to keep going for a while, but I felt strongly that it was time. I still feel like we did the right thing.

Take care and know that a lot of people are thinking about you and Loki right now. hugging

Sandra, just wanted to follow up here. I understand Loki is ok except for DM. I know your friends here would like to know that before going to bed. But maybe you can give us an update in the morning. As you can see, several of us have been there.

Sandra, I know the road ahead can be a rocky one at times. Like I mentioned, I can't begin to tell you how many times I thought it was it for Eli and yet he kept coming back. Each time felt devastating for me, but somehow we manage to go on. All I can say is hold on to every moment. They are precious. I sat on the hill with my pups the other day and told them someday they are going to rip my heart out in a pain that is unimaginable, but for now I'm going to enjoy every moment with them.

What did the doctor say about the panting?

Rosa they didnt say very much about it at all. We hooked up the a/c when we got home and for the first time in a long time he quit panting.
My bones are aching from it and its definitely cool in here, but the big guy is happy.

Just sending along some good thoughts, I know this is such a hard disease, and this time with Loki is bittersweet. Extra hugs to you both!
