Not a GSD. Either dog.

Xerxes is our little alert dog, running to the door (and sometimes baying, sigh) when he hears something in the hall.

Today he jumped off the couch onto Neb when he heard something. Neb was NOT appreciative - I don't think even when he was younger he would've tolerated that, but now that he's older - NOPE!

Lots of dogs being angry noises, Xerxes did his scared/pain bay. He then ran behind the couch, I went to see if he was okay and he ran to the other side of the dining room table. Eventually I got him and checked him over and didn't see anything.

We were just out on the balcony and there's some blood on his muzzle - we're going to swab it with alcohol. Poor little guy.

I'm pretty sure polysporin is bad for dogs?

First, I'd assess what "some blood on his muzzle" looks like (beyond red). As in what kind of wound, how significant, etc. I don't remember Xs age but I think he's fairly young. He will learn to access the "gotta get'em" route more carefully - likely has started as soon as Neb explained it to him.

So, how deep is the wound, how big overall. Did it bleed adequately? (I was mistakenly nailed in a game of "catch the weed" - as deep as a wound to a finger could go or close to that, bled a lot. Rinsed it under running water, bandaged it and wore a rubber glove when I felt it was needed (as in weeding). Watched it. It was fine/is fine. Was swollen for a couple of days but now almost normal size.) So - access the wound. Just washing it may be adequate. Monitor it. I'm not sure I'd use alcohol on it. I used to do peroxide but now that's not recommended. I'd likely just use water on it.

And this reply is almost a full day late.... sorry about not being more on the spot.

Oh that's okay. And good suggestions for the next time. It really was a scratch, though the fur around there was bloody. I did end up using the alcohol (we have peroxide too, sigh) and there's nothing today. I looked at it and it really just looks like a dark little fur-less spot.

Xerxes is 4, and Neb's laid down the law to him before, but like 2 years ago when we adopted him. It's been awhile. However, they're fine. And I don't blame Neb, 12 year old dogs don't appreciate a dog landing on them! (I doubt a dog of any age would)

Glad your finger is doing better. Great advice, thanks!
