So, in other threads, I've mentioned our issues with Agis being left alone - when crated, he pees, on himself, even if taken out for a big walk beforehand, and moving to a more enclosed crate just meant that instead of cocking his leg and peeing out of the wire crate, he just peed all over himself.

So we started leaving him in a (hopefully) puppy-proofed second bedroom with Xerxes and Agis.

However - Agis is now over 20lbs heavier than Xerxes, who doesn't ALWAYS want to play with Agis (who always wants to play). When he tries to engage in play with Neb, Neb does this keening shrilling that is an unholy racket, that's when Neb WANTS to play - when he doesn't, we worry at some point Neb will go after (the larger) Agis. Plus Neb is 12 now and deserves some quiet.

Sunday I went for a run and Toby decided to go out for some supplies (cream for his coffee) and put Neb and Xerxes in our bedroom, and Agis alone in the second bedroom. Agis was freaking which got the other two going and I came home to a 'Your dogs are losing it' from the lady two floors up (the building busybody who tries to get the people between us kicked out for noise). Besides, we don't want to be bad neighbours. It was not first thing in the morning either, closer to 11am. Still, not ideal.

I told Toby we'll have to crate Xerxes and leave him and Agis in the second bedroom and Neb in the master. It's unfair to Xerxes, I suppose, but the crate is comfy and he doesn't do much but sleep when we're not around anyways.

We just did a test run of this set up and while we could hear some whining from outside of our unit, and some jumping, all was quiet!

This is probably the lazy route out but honestly Agis and the crate was just ridiculous. We talked to the trainer about it and tried her suggestions, no luck. Perhaps we didn't try hard enough? I don't know, but this seems to work, and as Xerxes is also destructive (if he gets out of the bedroom), isn't necessarily a bad step.

Don't over think the what is fair and what isn't. Dogs only live in the present and as long as everyone is handling this routine then this is a winner.

Neilla is always in the laundry room when were are gone out out of the house for long periods of time. This keeps her content and in case the cat decides to roam the house the cat is safe also. Is it fair? Who knows but they don't seem to be harmed or damaged by the situation.

Thanks guys!

You're right - it's working so far, so don't mess with it. Toby gets 'it's not fair' into my head, but I think Xerxes probably enjoys not being bugged by Agis.

Agis is just a full of beans puppy! We were playing fetch with him, but they've shut all the off-leash areas and have by-law officers in the field/park across the street (NOT an off-leash area, but people bring their dogs there). Then our complex (where we moved fetch and tug too) sent out a notice saying dogs were not allowed off-leash. So fetch is kind of out, but we do play tug with a leather rag on a line. It's not AS good at tiring him though.

Good for you for being persistent and trying different options. Sometimes what works for one dog does not work for another. I hope the busybody neighbor is content with your new solution too. wink
