I helped Zisso cross the rainbow bridge this morning. I was allowed to be with him as he took his final breath, despite the Corona Virus.

My heart is broken.

Zisso came to me when he was 16 months old. Small and skinny with a rehoming photo that made him look pitiful. I had a choice between him and a litter mate who was a bit larger. I instantly fell head over heels in love with Zisso and there was no question from the moment I laid eyes on him that he was the guy for me!

That was February of 2009. And we lived a happy life together for these 11+ years.

We tried Shcutzhund where his only strong suit was the bite work, even though it took some work to get him riled up enough to take a shallow bite.
We tried dock diving and he overcame his fear of that deep clear water enough to jump a couple of feet. He still won ribbons for his efforts.

We moved to Oregon, then back to Washington, and finally one last move to Oregon. He was the perfect traveler. Quiet and accepting of whatever I threw at him. He accepted our cat Keekers right off the bat, and Pepe too! He welcomed Nadia to the pack and spent endless hours playing chase with her. He LOVED the snow, even when the snow stuck to his feet, little ice balls between his toes.

Zisso hated being groomed. Hated the bath. Loved the wading pool, but not enough to lay down in the water. He would dig through the water, splashing it gleefully biting at the water, getting soaked and shaking it off. I think that was his idea of a good enough bath. [Linked Image]

Zisso welcomed Gyspy and taught her the ropes. He tolerated he goofy antics, and did his best to chase her about the yard too. He gave her a few corrections along the way, yet nothing mean spirited.

His long coat meant he was always on the warm side and he didn't cuddle with anyone but me. He was terrified of thunderstorms and fireworks and that is when he seemingly wanted to crawl under my skin. He could never get close enough.

Zisso was the first Big Dog that my dad ever lived with. Dad told everyone who visited what a good boy he was. Dad was always chuckling about silly things Z did. Like when he would put a toy in my lap and try to grab it back, pinching my skin as he did. Dad laughed about it every time, until Z did it to him once. Then it was dad who howled. Z always slept in the spare bed in dads room, and that tickled dad to pieces. When I lost dad, I closed the door to that room. To the very end, Z seemed to want to go back in there.

His memory will be with me forever and ever. All of the fun we had, all of our walks, the gentle love he gave, the sweet snuggles we shared.

But for now....my heart is simply broken.

You posted a marvelous tribute to your Zisso. But we still can't capture them in words and pictures. Instead you triggered all the memories of every beloved dog that any of us have ever had.

This is so difficult.

You have my profound sympathy for your loss of Zisso.

Thank you all for your kind words.

He had my heart all wrapped up with his unique ways of showing his love and all of his quirks. The only real comfort I find in his passing is that he is no longer in any pain, and that he faces no difficult future.

Gypsy is seemingly unaffected by Zisso's absence. All she really cares about is food, ball, bark, and attention. She will keep me busy as I navigate the world without my big man...

As we move forward, I have a lot to do with Gypsy. We are still working on a lot of different things, training wise. She still does not like people and other dogs or car rides. I would love to get her up in the mountains to show her there are other fun things to do besides walking the neighborhood and playing in the back yard.

I knew it would be hard yesterday for me, and we had a quiet day. I did very little. The one thing I did accomplish was to put Z's crate and blankets, bed, and special toys away. I knew waking up to them today would bring me right back to tears. It helped. G didn't seem to notice that his crate was gone despite watching me put it away.

Last night I gave her the option to be free in the back half of the house. I have a baby gate that separates the living room and kitchen. I picked up the garbage can by the washer to keep her from dragging out the dryer lint, and put my shoes up. She slept with me until I was too hot and was tossing and turning, then she went to her crate. I got up once after that and locked her in.

Today she & I will go for a walk and I will try to get her in the car for a short ride over o my brothers. I have to work tonight and she will be crated as always. She is too excitable for me to leave her loose and would not do well.

My heart has a HUGE hole in it from losing Zisso and will take time to mend, while Gypsy has big paws to fill and lots of time to become half the dog Zisso was.

Bev, I'm so sorry I did not see your post earlier. I was saddened by your loss of Zisso. frown Your tribute was both dignified and bittersweet. I loved how Z slept in the spare bed next to your dad. Although he has left a huge void in your heart his memories will be there forever. RIP sweet angel. angel

It is indeed bittersweet to have had such a gentle soul in my life and now to feel such a huge void. It has been a week today and my tears still flow, especially when I come here and read all of your kind comments. I want to thank you all, not only for your kind words but for always being here and being so very supportive along the way. Losing Zisso has hurt me to my core, so your words have given me great comfort.

I don't know if I mentioned it earlier and can't bring myself to look at what I said in the post, but I chose to have him cremated. The funeral home was supposed to pick him up that same day- last Saturday, and said I should have his ashes back in about a week. As of this afternoon, I had heard nothing so I contacted them. The process was completed on Thursday and I will have him home on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, I decided rather quickly to intensify Gypsy's training. With her being so reactive to everything, I have to do things in baby steps. That's okay really. When she was little, I tried and tried to get her used to car rides and she has never liked it. Or taking a bath. Or people or dogs. She likes to keep her feet on the ground and to stay in her own little bubble. So Thursday, we went for a longer walk than usual, to my place of work, in the store, met my bosses from a short distance, showed off her pretty girl sit for a treat, and home. Friday we went for a short ride in the car. Eventually we will go someplace fun. She needs to see there is more to life than playing fetch LOL Today she got to play in the bathtub. No soap, just jumping in and out, and I slowly trickled water from my hand over her back and worked loose hair out. Then she got to go outside and play for a minute, and upon coming in again, got treats as I dried her legs, feet, face and chest. I also raked her out several times today- she is shedding something fierce! (That short hair does not get along with my sensitive skin. I always feel like it is poking me all over. )

These things are good for us both. It keeps me busy and focusing on her is filling that huge void left by my Zisso and it is helping her to work through her reactivity. She has also learned not to bark at kids riding bikes on the sidewalk in front of the house. I plan her experiences and give great thought to how to approach introducing things to her to keep her calm and make it fun at the same time.

No matter what we do, I miss the four paws of my bubba but I know he is running free with the rest of the pack and having best time ever. I will hug him again when we meet on the other side. Until then, my baby love will fill me up with new experiences and keep me company for years to come. I can only hope that she can become such a good dog like Z.

Thank you all again!

I'm so sorry to hear about Zisso, Bev. He was a beautiful, dignified dog and he was one of those dogs that was always so memorable here. He had a wonderful, happy life with you. It's going to be hard without him, but I'm glad you have Gypsy to keep you company and keep you occupied.
Rest in peace, sweet Zisso. gsdhalo

Sunday morning here two weeks later, and the ache has not subsided. Gypsy does help some, but I can't shake how bad I am missing Z. He was my rock! He kept me grounded. There is such a huge hole in my heart, despite being active with Gypsy. Life is just so...different.

I have stepped up training with G, and she is coming along nicely. Lots of different issues to be addressed with her, and she has no idea how much I miss him. She barely blinked with his disappearance. My heart skips a beat every corner I turn though.

This has been far more difficult than I expected. I didn't expect to be so emotional over this loss. My sweet, hairy, snuggly, handsome man, truly had me wrapped around his paws, and my heart will never be the same.
