A short while ago, I heard a thump, thump, thump from downstairs. I looked down and concluded that it was Ms. BTY2's tail.. then I looked at the downstairs window ---- Mr. Bluest of Blue Birds had been entertaining a Ms. Blue Bird in the north side of the turnout for a few days. And there was Ms. BB sitting on the back of one of my deck chairs facing the window and posturing a bit. Initially I thought it was the inspiration for Ms. BTY2's thumping -- but then I thought that perhaps it was Ms. BB challenging her reflection in the window. I'd not had such an upclose experience with a BB. Unfortunately, no photo but just a neat experience.

That's really cool...we have a pine tree off our balcony and sometimes a whole bunch of blue jays will land there, and it's the coolest thing.

Jenn, good for the jays in your tree. I love it when a flock comes to visit but I haven't had a flock of jays.

Ms. BB I fear has been into some fermented fruit... I was puzzled by some mild thumping this morning until I saw her. Right at the window next to where I was sitting. I flapped the hawk ID book I was holding at her. That seems to have discouraged her attempt to either get into the house or scare away her reflection. I hope her suitor persuades her that one of the bird houses is a better alternative.

Well, she then went down to attack her reflection in the window of the pump house. ... My bluebird book (not the hawk book) said this was common during the mating season. The only way to discourage it is to cover the window. One side now covered, the other open. ...

It was sad to watch her spending so much energy batting at the window. So likely hormones rather than alcohol... Seems she saw herself as an intruder but the intruder - being a reflection - fought back instead of retreating. Not proper BB etiquette.

I've been covering the pump house window every morning... But the newest "threat" was perceived as the highest windows in my house - about 30 feet off the ground. I yelled at the bird and that seemed to discourage it. There is no way I can cover that window! Just build your nest and lay your eggs!

OK Easter Blue Bird update.

There was one small corner of the pump house window that was not covered. Mr or Ms BB found it and had a fit. Covered that. Thump thump.... yes again up at the highest window in my house. waved my spiderweb removal stick at it and that seems to hve disouraged it...

They appear to be nesting in the pump house attic/eves. Tree swallows were checking out the bird box.... and no one likes my purchased bird box... except me. Ah well.
