Augie has seperation anxiety. Who knows what horrors he lived through before he came to us.
Usually on the very rare occasion when he has to be left alone with Loki he will bark for awhile and then settle down.
Today we wanted to take my Mom out to do a little shopping. So with the 3 of us in the car. The dogs have to stay home. I cant take Loki because of his DM. I cant take Augie and leave Loki home alone. That would be cruel. So off we went.
To be honest we forgot today was a provincial holiday. So when we get to Espanola (1 1/2hr drive) we found everything closed. To make the best of a bad situation, we went for a nice lunch.
When we got home I headed to the door to let the dogs out and give them hugs and kisses. My Mom goes into her room and found her house coat on the floor. Its torn to shreds. Augie!
This is the first time he has ever acted out like that. Im sorry about my Mom housecoat, but what kind of frustrations was Augie going through to do such a thing. I feel awful.
I don't own a crate. I've never used one for any of my dogs. We did borrow one when we first brought Augie home because we were told he was crate trained. He panicked something awful, so we gave it back.
I never want to put Augie through that kind of heartbreak again.
Anyone else with a dog with anxiety issues? What do you do to help them? frown

We struggle with this with Agis as well and I'm not sure we've found a good solution yet. We:

-crate him (though he's also a puppy)
-have him in a room with a pheromone plug-in
-leave on the radio
-give him a kong or treat ball frozen with treats to keep him occupied

We have anti-anxiety spray and treats that we often forget.

There are medications they can take but I don't think we're there yet. Still if other things don't work with Augie you could consider that.

Crate training might help. Putting a blanket over the crate and put his bed in there could serve as a safe space for Augie. You would have to be willing to put in the time and effort to have him warm up to the crate. Small steps are big victories. Some of the high anxiety dogs I've worked with in the past, I would really, I mean REALLY, exercise them. Make them too tired to get anxious (of course, this is different when it comes to going mental because of bad experiences). Eventually the crate would not be something seen as to be feared, but maybe something as a safe space to sleep in. Always leave the crate open during training, so if the dog suddenly remembers why he or she doesn't like the crate, he/she can back out and try again later when more comfortable. It just takes time.

I think that is excellent advice. I think crate training (or in your case retraining) is important. Crates are about the only way to be pretty sure a stressed out dog is safe. Just because he may have had bad experiences in the past doesn't mean that you can't work to change how he feels about the crate now.

Crates are wonderful, my dogs just love their crates. That is their space in this world, its nice and cozy and safe.

You've had Augie for a long time. If this is the first time this has happened I'm not so sure he has separation anxiety. Do you think he's starting to develop it? Maybe he was just acting up, or it's just one of those things. Sorry about the house coat but sometimes things happen.

Good luck and let us know how its going.

I think he was jeqlous. Its always Wayne, me and Augie. This time we took domeone else and left him behind. Or maybe she had a treat in tbe pocket and her coat smellex extra yummy . Or it was just fun.
I was thinking we should set up the web cam and see if we notice anything that might set him off.
The problem with the crate. The house is so small snd right now if has too much furniture. There is no room for a crate.

I was just thinking of Augie and wondering if there was an update.

If you have web cams I would set them up for sure. That way you can see whats going on. I'm kind of thinking he might just be acting up some. Sometimes I think we expect our dogs to always be perfect by our definition of perfect. That's just not realistic.

I hear you about having a small house. I have the pups crates in the hallway but they block the entire hallway.

Im sorry i haven't been around. I've had some family issues I've had to deal with.
Augie hasnt been left alone since the incident. I've been takng him to work with me lately. I've been working on inventory so when i need a break i take Augie out in the hall and practice some obedience lessons with him. Its been doing us both good..

Sorry to hear about your family issues. That sounds really nice that Augie can come to work with you though.

It is so great that he can come with me. Ive got the best place in the world to work. Its an old fish hatchery that was totally redone. Its beautiful.
There are 6 different art studios on the 2nd floor where i am. There is a huge wide hall in the middle.
My studio is on the water side. I look out over the bay. Everyone there is a dog lover. Ill post a picture of the veiw outside the deck of my studio.
