I think this is fairly normal for a GSD (/Rottie cross), but maybe Luc was just a jerk and Teagan most certainly didn't back down from a challenge.

Agis - who is around 6.5mos old - loves everyone. He attended that march and did great.

Unless, they are standing somewhere he feels is aberrant, then he barks (he is told quiet, it's like if someone's just standing at a street, he finds it weird, why are they skulking there!!!!!).

He also will bark and sometimes growl at people (with dogs, but I'm certain the dog is incidental as he likes other dogs) who stop and watch/stare at him. I think they're doing it because he's a cute puppy, but I also think he sees it as a challenge...am I off here?

I think this is relatively normal behaviour for the breed, and he is always told to knock it off, but I suspect it may just be his personality.

Dogs can view being stared at as a challenge and will react to it. The reaction depends on the dog.

OK I need a refresher on who's who and what's what...but that's not stopped me yet... so...

However, if I remember correctly or I've been told or some other disclaimer to start this off - terriers have been bred to "spar" as in stare down other dogs/instigate a fight. It's frustrating when a novice terrier owner thinks this is cute & thinks GSDs are jerks for responding (as in accepting the challenge).

Luc was a GSD/GSD mix - he lived to 15.5, died December 2018. Teagan was an aggressive GSD I had who died, geez, 10 years ago now?

Xerxes is a beagle who we have currently, Nebbers is a mutt who is turning 12 in April, and Agis is the GSD/Rottie cross who is our puppy!

Whew!

That's what I thought you guys, thanks to both of you. I don't want Agis to be taking up every challenge, but I also get that they're being rude. It's been when they're in our path (like at an intersection) and stop, blocking us. Or in our building's driveway, that happened while Agis was peeing to the side, some lady with her golden stopped and stared at Agis who stopped peeing and barked at her.

WHAT is with dog owners doing this! You'd think they'd know. But perhaps not, per Middle's terrier experience.

I had taken from your original post that it was people staring not other dogs, and I agree, as responsible dog owners they should know that staring can be a challenge to any dog, not just German Shepherds. One thing that I've done in the past is to get between the person and my dog to block the line of sight - sometimes it helps.

It is the people staring. He doesn't mind the dogs, they're just doing dog stuff.

That's a good idea though, thanks!

It could be vibes he's picking up on. For example, Sean loved most people but if he picked up any negative energy or what he interpreted as bad vibes he would snarl. I know some of those bad vibes were from non-dog friendly people but I was always a responsible dog owner, i.e. had him on leash when out for walks in the neighborhood so there was never a threat to anyone. However, some people are afraid of bigger dogs or just not dog people. shrug

That's the thing that's so weird - one of the people, the dog was smaller, but the other had a Golden!
