Ugh.

That's all I have to say about looking for our next family guardian dog. We have started looking into adopting a GSD. Looked at rescues, professional breeders, and those whose first-time owners realized they were in over their heads. Technically, we've been looking for a couple years now.

I'm just not looking forward to the training. With Abbey, I put on SO MUCH WORK in her. It was 3 hours a day, every day. A high-energy driven dog, 2 of those hours was spent just wearing her out so she is trainable! I keep thinking "look for a puppy whose parents are not high-driven, working dogs". I'm not sure if that's possible. I am hopeful we will find the one that fits us our family, and not be so high-drive. I hope to have Abbey retire as family guardian soon. So she can live out her days just resting and loving on us. She's going to be 12 in 4 months!

Could you talk to breeders and say you want a lower-drive dog?

Good luck though, it's a process for sure.

There are couch potatoes out there. With four paws & a lot of hair. Pointy ears. You'll find one. But is that what you want or do you want a medium drive dog? the term "family guardian" leaves me a bit confused as to what you are after. Keep in mind, too, that what may have been "too much" for someone else may be "just right" for you.

Except for my breeders Czech lines her dogs tend to have less of a drive. I'm thinking her Polish lines might be a good fit. I'll pm you info.

You can find a GSD with a lower drive but you'd need to stay away from the Czech lines and I believe its the East German Lines. Of course, there are exceptions but I'm thinking more in brood terms.

Family guardian meaning a dog that protects the family and the home. To get a dog with a drive like Abbey's, I believe, will be too much for me. I spent the first 4 years with Abbey doing that much training and exercising with her. Then in the fifth year, I became pregnant with my first and has scaled back a lot. She was still a lot to handle with a baby, but we held on to her and have been greatly rewarded. I don't think we can accomplish similar result by investing in another high-drive dog. For Abbey to turn out as she did, we have gotten super lucky. I don't expect to get another like her (and gosh, I hope not the same high energy!)

I don't mind a low-drive dog, and I am good with a medium-drive dog so long as the dog serves the purpose of protecting the family and serves as a good alert system and will step up to the plate when the family is threatened. Either way, the dog will be treated as part of the family, but the point of getting the dog is he/she will have a major purpose for being in our family.

It's been years since I looked into that area of the breeding. I don't recall, so I did not realize there are certain lines that are notorious for high drives.
