So I decided - since the cabin we're staying in up here is bigger than our apartment with a long hall (admittedly we have an ACTUAL huge hall on our floor at home, plus closed in basement halls) that I'd start teaching Agis heel. He did great! Hampered by his trainer, honestly (me). Very focused on me and the t-r-e-a-t-s.

Is it true that you shouldn't teach a dog below a certain age to heel? Their necks or something? He's around 6 months.

Oh, and Toby just called 'Agis! Come!'
Agis sat there.
Toby: Well, he still doesn't know come.
Me: Agis! Come!
Agis: runs over to me

That's my big guy! And here I thought because Toby is the 'fun' one (not that I'm not fun, but I don't indulge the same way).

Good luck with the healing, it sounds like the little guy is doing great.

I haven't heard about not training the heal command before 6 months. The only thing I can think of is maybe you don't want to use a corrective collar on a young dog???

I think 6 months is a good time to train for heal. Now that I think about it that was one of the things Kody learned in puppy classes so I'm thinking your fine.

Love, love love that he comes right to you when YOU call him wub While you've got to have fun and games, I think pups look for leadership so I'm not surprised he came running to you. Great work all the way around. How long are you going to be at the cabin? It looks like a great place for the pups.

We head home today! Right after breakfast frown

Probably not a corrective collar. I've heard that it's bad to have their heads turned? But I can't imagine it's a huge issue.

Thanks!!!!!

Yeah he's a good boy. Toby was all upset and I was secretly highly amused. I'm glad one of us is the leader.

You don't want any prolonged period of heeling in any age dog.

If you are looking at a competition heel, yes the turned up head with focus is desirable but not required. If you are working on heel for a family pet, I would concentrate on position; i.e.: by your side in a controlled walk.

Even teams in competition are not heeling anymore than about 5 minutes. In training, I don't ask for heel for more than a minute or twp. When I am proofing for a trial I would ask for a long stretch comparable to what would occur in the ring.

Oh thank you Kathy! That makes a lot of sense actually. I'll work on position rather than up turned head for now. I'd like to do his CGN but I don't think you need a competition heel for that!
