We've known about it for awhile. Hes been incontinent lately.
He can hold his pee, but its either a race to the door or he poops in his sleep.
Last week we took him in to the vet as he has been in more pain. So she put him on Gabapentin 2 capsuls up to 4x a day. Along with his Meloxacam that he been on for at least a year for his Arthritis.
She let us know that his time is coming to an end. We might have him for weeks or months. It still haxnt sunk in yet.
I can't imagine not having the big guy around. But for now we will deny him nothing. We will take him for lots of truck rides a d fill his final days with joy.

Oh I'm sorry. Luc was like that at the end too, he had a polyneuropathy. I hope it's more time, and good time. I like your ideas to make him happy up until the end.

Having senior dogs is such a privilege. Loki is lucky to have you.

Oh Sandra, I am so very deeply sorry. I know that pain only too well. I can't remember exactly how long Eli was fecal incontinent, but it was well over a year. My vet tried steroids, the kind that are used to build muscles and that helped keep him going for much longer than he otherwise would have. All I can say is enjoy the time you have. Take lots of pictures and videos and hold him all you can.

Sandra, you might want to check out the thread I did for Eli. Over time I tried so many things, some were more successful than others, but I think there's a lot of info there and I'm hoping some might help.

Of course, you've got to get the pain under control. Make sure he gets his meds like clockwork. The fecal incontinence is manageable.

It sure does bring back memories. Oh what I would give to clean up Eli's poop one more time.

Thank you for the all the wonderful words from every one. Loki is yaving more difficulty with walking. He staggers quite a bit and drags he feet lately.
I went out for a small walk with him and he was so playful. He'd btie at the snow and try to do his little famous jump, hop skip but his legs would seem to tangle. Hes so much fun to be with and i love it hen bes feeling better like that.
I'll look into treatment that you suggested Rosa. Thanks.

Sandra,

Serious illnesses in dogs bring a particular ache-they may suffer and not know the reason but we do. I think that DM is not painful, which is a little comfort.

You already said the most important thing-every day should be the best.

MJ is right, I don't think there's any pain related to DM its just the pain from the arthritis that needs to get under control. Eli had osteoarthritis in both front legs which made DM in the back even harder. If I had any clue that DM was painful it would have been a whole different ballgame for us.

Try to keep him walking for as long as you can. I use to do my own physical therapy with him several times a day. I'm a strong believer in the power of touch.

I so wish you both the best my friend. I hope for lots of time to create even more memories with your best friend.

There is no pain, but to see the confusion in their eyes when they stumble and fall is heart breaking. Our shepherds are such a proud, majestic, strong breed. They don't understand why they aren't in control anymore. That was the hardest for me to deal with in my Angel's last months.

Thank you all. Loki seems to try to head to the door when he starts to poop. Sometimes he can almost make it sometimes not. At least he tries. The embarrassment in his eyes is heart breaking. But i try to keep my voice light and pet him after ive cleaned up the mess. It seems to help him emotionally.
Such a sweet boy. Right now he's dreaming. I think he must be dreaming of giving Fred Estaire dance lessons. groovy gsdbeggin

Loki is such a sweetie. Your doing a great job with him. If he tends to sleep in a doggie bed perhaps you can move it closer to the door. That way when he awakes its a shorter trip to outside.

It's very hard on these pups that feel like they are doing something wrong when they potty inside. My suggestion is to always have stuff handy to pick it up and like your doing, never make a big deal out of it. Just like they learned to potty outside, he will learn that you have his back. The new rules is he goes potty and you clean it up and in no time its all done. Hug him and assure him this is ok.

The important thing for everyone is to do your best to keep his stools solid. So no changing foods or giving him anything that may have caused the runs when he was younger.

There's a pet stain remover called Carbona Carpet cleaner. Its the best stuff ever when it comes to cleaning up a mess. I'm never without it. But it saved all of my rugs from some of the biggest messes you can imagine.

My old girl Rica had HD and arthritis in her hips, spondylosis in her back that made it difficult for her to walk and she had fecal incontinence towards the end as well. She kind of started the way Loki is now, not knowing she needed to go until almost the last minute. When she got so bad she couldn't tell at all, we kept her lying on the pee pads, which at least made clean up pretty easy. I also got one of those Help-em Up harness to help take her outside and such. Tried a towel under her belly but found it difficult to really help her effectively with the towel, the harness made it a whole lot easier.

Loki has been having bad days lately. He just doesn't realize he's poop and just lays there. Yet he will get up and want to go out to lay in the snow. He'll ask 15-20×s a day to go out. Then as soon as he's in he'll poop.
I keep a mop and bucket of fresh water with disinfectant in it for quick mop ups. It breaks my heart to see the confused look in his eyes.
