Just wondering what everyone's bedtime routine is like with your pups? I've had a tradition for years where I give the pups cookies in bed before nighttime. Of course, they know and depend on it every night. After that Kody bear settles on the bed, Sashi jumps up to get a drink and when she returns she tries everything to get us to play with her. She squirms, she want's a belly rub, she wants to play the weasel game (my hands under the blanket as she anticipates where my hand might pop up). She 'talks' to Kody. She's all energy for a couple of moments then she settles down for sleep. Everyone on the bed with me just the way I love it.

Ciara has started a new bedtime routine in the past few months. Around 11:00pm, she gets up and comes over to me and lays her head on my knee. She gets a couple of pets and then I ask her what she wants. She looks toward the bedroom (the Master is off of the living room) and then back at me. I ask if she wants to go to bed. Immediately she grabs a toy and trots off to the bedroom and gets on the bed on my side of the bed (warms it up for me). I usually come in within about 5-10 minutes with Caleb and they lay on DH's side of the bed and "warm it up for him". They get some cuddles before I turn the light off. DH usually stays up to watch a couple of the talk shows before he comes to bed, so his side is nice and warm when he comes to bed.

There's also been a few nights when DH was out of town and I was watching a late night movie. Ciara just decides that it's bedtime and goes in on her own, as if to say "I'm not waiting any longer for you, Mom."

One dog on the bed, one dog on the floor. To get there, I lock the doors, make sure the shades are lowered, turn off the downstairs lights, head upstairs. Sometimes the "dog on the bed" waits to come up until I've gone to bed, other times she comes up early, sometimes she stays downstairs. Our routine, therefore, is "mixed."

I forgot the most important thing. Every night the last thing the pups hear is me saying "Nite, nite, sweet dreams, know that you are loved"

Usually David takes Nova for a long walk at 10 or 11 PM and I'm asleep when they return. She gets a little kibble and a milkbone and they come upstairs. Nova then plops down on the floor next to me and when David can pry himself from the computer she goes to the 3rd floor with him. She moves a lot at night-from next to David to next to me to the landing between the floors.

Newbie here. Can a dog follow human sleep pattern? What I mean like a normal human being, we sleep around 6 to 7 hours at night. So if we sleep with the dogs, can they just slowly follow the routine sleep?

I used to have a cat before, I sleep with her during the night, as usual, in the middle of the night, she does the cat thing wandering around

My dogs are older and sleep a fair amount during the day. But they sleep in our bedroom with us at night and don't wander around. That doesn't mean the stay in one place the whole time. They usually start on the bed and get down at some time or other and lay on the floor or on their pillows.

We do treats, last potties, lock doors. Then the corgi puppy gets a few pieces of kibble in her crate. Mayhem gets some too, just because. Then its lights out.

Because I work evenings our schedule is slightly odd.

I work 4 nights a week and get home by 9:15 to 9:30. Dogs go out to potty. I grab a bite to eat. G goes back out to potty. We come in, Z goes to his hallway where he has always laid, G at my feet, while I check email, facebook etc. At 10pm, G moves to the couch. When I am finished with the computer, I turn out the light and TV and go to bed. G follows and goes straight to her crate. This routine can vary a little, but that's pretty much it. And she is crated when I go to work at 4:30, so from 4:30pm to 6ish in the morning when she starts to stir for the day with about a half hour- 45/min break to potty at 9:30. But she basically puts herself to bed by 10.

Love this thread. I did as advised... didn't let her up into bed for the first year (till training foundation was firm). She has "her side" with an additional cover over the duvet. We still observe rules... she can't come up till I'm settled in bed. All's good... but there are "certain bed manners" that a dog needs reminding of from time to time. Here are some I use weekly... she slooowly complies - but with some sleep heavy slowness....

!. "Scoot over to your side". I give her a little elbow in the back... Sometimes it works, sometimes not and I just go back to sleep.
2. "You have your own pillow! Off mine - scoot over". She gives me a "you pain in the ass human groan and scoots a few inches over to her pillow.
3. "Yeech"… "your sleeping on your pillow but an inch away from my mouth":( Scoot Over!
4. "Yuck!!!" .. "your butts an inch away from my face!!! Where is your pillow? Scoot OVER! For Gods sakes! Its a Queen size bed. Is this a planned 2am revenge of the bed dogs????

Bedtime usually consists of Yukon following me into my room around 11-11:30pm. I light a candle and get on the computer while he lays down in one of three places: next to my chair, near the door or in his crate.

After I am done on the computer, I then turn to see where Yukon has dozed off. If he is outside his crate I gently wake him with my foot and watch as he slowly rises, stretches and walks into his crate.

If he is already in his crate, I take my meds, blow out my candle and crawl into bed. tired
