I canít find anything regarding this to save my life. I have a GSD whoís about 16w old. Woke up yesterday morning with his left rear hock swollen and seemed pretty lethargic but still upbeat. Took him to the vet around 1pm yesterday and they couldnít figure anything out (aside from temp about 104į fever) without $800+ worth of blood tests and xrays. As far as we know heís experienced no trauma to that area, or bites or anything? I shaved his hock area and it appears to be pretty dark in color and warm to the touch. Iíll be calling the vet again today to relay the info. Heís currently on some anti inflammatories, antibiotics, and Benadryl. So if there is an infection in his hock it should (fingers crossed) clear up in a week or so. He wonít eat his usual food, only chicken. But itís better than nothing. The only thing I can think of is he likes to run up the stairs to my apartment and theyíre concrete so maybe he hurt himself doing that? Not sure why a fever would come about? Either way Iíd appreciate any input from anyone. I have attached a picture of the area. If nothing improves Iíll be shelling out the money for the blood tests and X-rays. Itís just horrible timing financially. [Linked Image]

Running up and down stairs is hard on developing joints. Can you slow him down? I realize he has to get up and down the stairs somehow.
He's probably too young for panosteitis.

Inflammation can be accompanied by fever. Hope he gets better.

Welcome to the both of you!

I appreciate it! Finding this site has been awesome. I can slow him down. I just hope he gets better soon and that itís nothing permanent.

Puppies are so full of energy and do so many things so fast, its no wonder they don't get hurt more often. You might want to limit his running up and down stairs at this age, but who's to say what caused this. If its warm to the touch that would indicate an infection so I'm glad he's on antibiotics.

Please update us when you get a chance. I'm thinking its a bruise with an underlying infection, but if it doesn't improve I would take him back to the vet.

I would be concerned about tick disease if there is a possibility of exposure. Although different joints will swell when it's systemic, early on, it could be just the joint nearest the bite.

We have had a few pups over the years on the forum with HOD, but I think that a vet might recognize that from the rays? I'm not as familiar with that. I don't recall if there is more info in the health index.

Sure hope he is feeling better.

Reading the Wiki more closely, looks like it's not the right bones for HOD, but I would keep an eye out, just in case.

Do you have copies of the bloodwork? Where any blood counts elevated or low? Often vets will dismiss some abnormalities, so I like to get copies for my files at home.

First thing I thought was tick borne. He's just so young so I'm not certain.
