While I love having the digital pictures a part of me misses the old photos. It just seems like I never take the time to get them printed anymore. How about you folks? Are most of your pictures on your phone now? I really need to get better at developing prints.

No photos on my phone. My phone is usually in my purse in the house and lacking a charge. (I guess I'll have to plan ahead for an emergency to be able to have it charged... wink wink... ) The last thing I want is something that can track where I am, thank you. But for photos, most since 2008 are on the computer. I print a few when Bi-Mart has a sale & I get it together. I need to do more of that. Photo albums right now are really cheap at the junk stores. .... The photos from about 1998 or so have prints and a disk but of course my computer refuses to open the program to view those disks --- which means I have to scan the hard copy to post it here....

I have a few photos on my phone. To me it's a phone and not a mini computer and it's only on when we go out. We have very poor cell reception at the house, which my DH thinks is great. laugh

I still use a digital camera for photos. I have some prints of pictures i used to hang in my office area (or cube) at work.

Most everything else is on my laptop, with backup copies on a backup drive (when I make the time to do a backup). laugh

I have some on my phone, but I have a digital camera that I download to my computer after each use.

You all brought up a good point, my pictures are on the computer as well. Someday soon I'm going to have to go through them and order some prints.

Johanna,

Back up is important. I know it. I don't do it. I'll just refresh that on my list....

Coming from my profession for a while I was set on doing stuff in "correct" products, neatly, organized documented... Then I realized that these are important to me. Only me. Who is going to want a ton of photos of an old woman, her dogs, a horse or two and her yards over the years? Predominately photos of an old woman's dogs. dogs here, dogs there, dogs digging, dogs playing in the water.... Sure. Get those put in acid free containers with acid free mounts in an archival album for someone to throw out!!! Yup. Get on it!

Realistically, I should get hard and choose maybe 50 a year to save. Print the really fine ones of snow fall and sunsets & try to get some recognition for those, print ones I like to stick around and just quit fussing about it. Instead they just pile up on the computer.... It's close to fair time and if the local machine printer (does a much better job cheaper when on sale too than at home) gets up and running along with a sale (something like 1$ for an 8x10) I may be motivated. Then if I really want to get on it, I should get my sorry butt out the door with the SLR charged and down to some great industrial shots downtown in the fairly early AM. Hasn't happened yet.

So here I am on the computer adding to my list instead of crossing items off. What a surprise!! (not).

And then I've got an idea for an entry for this months contest here. Hmmmm OK swell.

Pictures. I am sad that I don't really have digital pics of Indy, it was so long ago. I have some of max. I have a zillion of jazz smile. I have some outstanding ones of jazz because of our hiking group, and a few people there take superb dog pics. I now have triple backups, since I ran out of room on my hard drive for high res pics.

I have experience with Seagate external drives failing, which is what my main backup is, unfortunately. Thus I have an additional WD drive that I use for backup. Because of the hiking pics, I'm more diligent than I would be otherwise.

As for print? I would love to get some prints made, but not on my radar right now.

I know that how best to digitally archive for the future, to preserve not only the files, but to be able to read the file format, is kinda a hot topic right now.

That's been the case for a number of years, at least I can remember discussions going back at least 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry. laugh

In the museum world, updating is an issue with data and images as well as other media. Oral histories were often taped on the media of the day - 8 track, then cassette (size 1 & 2 and what the heck maybe yet another size). On top of needing the hardware to retrieve it, it was well recognized that tapes could/would drop data and digital media also has that problem. Of course print photos are not permanent either. (1970s color prints had a very short life, especially when exposed to our ordinary light.) Then we can go in to what is and isn't permanent and most stuff if not all stuff isn't.

Ok you've really poked the bear on this one....
