Dog flu is pretty well established in the East but the vaccine is supposed to be reasonable. In New York now, flu is one of the core vaccines dogs receive-it's required for some group activities like day care.

Those article are often pretty alarmist I think. We've had several waves through town here, one pretty bad where the daycare started requiring the flu tax. Luckily, the owners have honored jazz's vaccine exemptions. Recently daycare has rescinded that requirement.

There's a lot of bad stuff out there, it's good in general to always have support your dog's immune system. Healthy diet, minimal vaccines in general, and I guess in general being smart about exposures.

I will say though that the only time I had a really sick dog is then I brought something home from a dog show and Indy became so I'll. I think it was HGE, it was scary, and we all seemed to know so much less back then.

I haven't read up on the latest about the flu vax. It used to be that the current vax only offered limited protection for one of the most popular strains of dog flu. Not sure if they have tweaked the vax, but maybe by what MJ said they have.

Boarding kennel that I occasionally use started requiring this about a year ago. So when the Barker Sisters went in we had to have round 1 of the vaccine --- and then the second shot afterward.

I would imagine that it only covers certain strains because that's what the human one does. In humans, I understand it is reformulated to the projected strains for the year. I'd rather not get it but sometimes that's the best you can do.

Both of my pups have had the vaccine's. I know its not 100per cent but at least it offers some protections. I don't take my pups to dog parks or many high risk areas.

Thanks Lisa-that's a very informative post.

Here, the flu vaccination is two actual vaccines: for H3N2 (as described there) and H3N8 (horse flu that also infects dogs).

I don't know enough to comment on their efficacy.

Interesting about the two vaccines MJ. I often wonder about drift and the effectiveness of these vaccines year after year.
