Maybe I just don't understand but I'm thinking something is wrong here and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

I feed one of the Victor Foods and they recently changed the ingredients. The calories per cup went from 450 to 406. But the Feeding instructions for an 80lb dog only went from 3 3/4 to 4 cups a day. If you do the math, the old daily calories was 1687.50 but now the four cups recommended is only 1624 calories. This would be 63.5 calories less each day which would add up to 1905 less in calories in a 30 day period. That's a lot!!!

I think this is a problem with the label, but what do you think? I'm thinking of contacting Victor's about this but wanted to throw this out there first. Maybe I'm just missing something.

I guess I never look at the Cal. per cup. I rarely feed the amount they say for the weight of my dogs. I go by what their body looks like and weight. Neilla is the only one that threw me for a loop when we had her in to the vet and she finally got up on the scale. Chubby was 120 lbs, so I cut her food back. She a total of 3 cups a day, split 1 1/4 cups breakfast - less than 1/2 cup noon snack and 1 1/4 cups supper, she lost a little weight by what I can feel. According to the bag she should be getting 5 cups a day, way too much for her.

I kind of like Val. I go by how the dogs are looking and adjust accordingly. I might use the feeding instructions as a starting point.

Here's my take on the label recommendation. There's nothing wrong with your math. If you figure out the amount to feed by the old formulation/calories fed and divided the 1687.5 calories by 4 cups, you get 4.156 cups, or 4 5/32 cups. Since most measuring cups are 1/4 cup increments, they probably rounded it down to 4 cups. My old vet said that a general rule of thumb is young, active dogs need 20 - 30 calories per pound of body weight, depending on exactly how active they are. That gives you a starting range of 1600 - 2400 calories per day.

I've always gone by how the dog looks and the rib test too. However, there are some issues with that if it differs greatly from the label. If you are feeding a lot less than what the label says is appropriate for the weight of your dog, then you may introduce some nutrient deficiencies and supplementation may be appropriate.

As for your original question about this specific food, it sounds like they either had a formulation change, or a correction to what they originally had on the label. You can definitely call them and ask what's up with the change.

I use the feeding instructions as guide, but I watch the dog's weight. A vet told me years ago that they must figure the feeding instructions for sled dogs or something. He aid what the instructions say are generally more than the average dog needs.
