Judging from the size of the tick, it may have been on her for a couple of days. It's a lone star tick. I have saved the tick and will call the vet tomorrow to see about starting her on antibiotics. That darn little thing was so tough to get out! the fangs got stuck in the skin but at least the head is removed with the body. I rubbed alcohol on the site and applied Neosporin. Will reapply in a few hours and cone her for the night so she isn't licking at it constantly. Abbey got a treat for being so patient. She was not comfortable getting that tick out.

Husband noticed yesterday that Abbey would not leave me alone the last couple of days and even commented on it, wondering if something happened. We didn't know, but now I think it was Abbey saying "Help, something is biting me!" I just happened to be getting her a good belly scratch when I found it.

Ugh. Ticks!

Sadly, she's been on monthly flea/tick preventative so I'm wondering if the ticks are starting to evolve?

What kind of preventative?

The thing I like least about the spot-on types is that they still have to bite and start to feed before the preventative kills them. The vet we're going to up here in NH has recommended those Seresto collars as being pretty effective and there are a lot of ticks up here. I've also read recently that some of the essential oils, cedar oil in particular) actually interfere with the tick's neuro system and interferes with their ability to bite and feed. Since we've been using the essential oil with peppermint and eugenol (a clove extract), we've mostly been finding dead or dying ticks but none that are attached and feeding on them. I don't know if we've just been lucky.

Hope Abbey is OK. I hate ticks!

Johanna, K-9 Advantix II.

I use essential oils as well, but has been hesitant to use them on my animals. I don't know enough about them, and we diffuse daily. Plus I'm pretty cautious about applications since we also have cats. One of them loves Abbey and I am concerned about contact problems stemming from that.

So glad you found it and was able to remove the whole thing. Kody just had his physical and we ended up getting a chewable called Simparica. Just started both of mine on it. So far I've been lucky, no ticks or fleas, but we just started the new stuff.

I used to use the Advantix and switched a couple of years ago, while we were still in CT to Sentry Fiproguard. It;s the same ingredients as in Frontline Plus and much cheaper than Frontline or Advantix. I found it seemed to work better for my guys. I get it from Chewy.

I can understand being a bit hesitant to use the essential oils, with a cat in the mix. I've been using the stuff on Ciara and Caleb - the cat doesn't bother with them unless they annoy him too much - and they've been fine so far. I'd have second thoughts if there was grooming going on between them and the cat, too.

Just wondering what the Vet said. Did Abbey need to go on antibiotics? Ticks are some scary things.

Hello Rosa! I've been out of touch due to flare-ups. I got distracted Monday and didn't call, and that night after I realized I forgot to call, Hubby said she's doing fine and her site was healing good, so he suggested we wait and watch her. She's doing great, playful and obnoxious.

Take an account of how she is feeling and how she is acting in terms personality (playfulness, anxiousness, fear, energy, etc.). Put a mark on the calendar and reassess in about 6-8 weeks to see if there are any changes. Some dogs will change soon, some will change more slowly, it depends on what particular bug is (or is not) in the tick and the immune system of the dog. Be sure to add at least the SNAP 4dx to your annual health exam if there is exposure to ticks.
