One of our neighbors adopted a 1 yr. old dog and said he needs his nails trimmed approx. every 2 wks. but can't afford to keep bringing him to the groomer. I mentioned using a dremel but she said he would be scared of the noise. I then suggested walking him on hard surfaces to wear the nails down. Does anyone have another idea that might help?

Work with handling the dogs feet if this isn't already in the program. Then trim the nails at home. If there's protest, do one at a time. If the dog is fine with it, do a couple on each foot the first try. Then make another pass in a few hours or the next day.

Thanks, middle, this is their first "adopted" adult dog so I think they're not used to what issues go along with a rescue. Since we have only adopted in the past I try to offer suggestions but I think they're going to have to work through some of these issues themselves. I'll ask if they have tried to gently handle his feet or trim the nails one at a time.

I use a dremel - with appropriate desensitization, they might be able to get the dog used to it - I was able to with Indy.
