Hello all. I am a new GSD owner. Attila is one year old. I adopted him at nine months old from a local shelter. He was a little thin. I have since gotten him healthy. I have one concern. Attila is shedding his undercoat in the middle of winter! I brush him daily and get handfuls every day. He isn't allowed any table scraps, I feed high quality food. He is alert and happy and playful. Do I need to worry about him shedding this much? He doesn't have any bald spots, isn't sensitive to touch or itchy. But could he still have a problem? Attila is my first GSD. Any advice is welcome!

Mine do the same thing - I think It's because they put on the undercoat for the winter (cold) and then live and spend most of their time in a warm house.

I think mine shed year around. Intact bitches seem to do the best job because at least twice a year they shed their guard hairs, too.

I've only had this issue a few times over the years with Dakota and Phoenix. This year is the worst for us. Bentley (approx 2 years old) had a fabulous winter coat coming into December and then about mid December started blowing his coat. To look at him, you would have thought it was May or August. I've been brushing him every day and it's blowing my mind how much undercoat I'm getting off of him. We have had a few unusual warm-ups here in the late fall/early winter but we keep our house relatively cool (62-66 degrees). Bentley spends a lot of his time outside with DH during the day so I'm a bit baffled at him blowing his coat. I switched him over to raw back in mid October, so I expected some coat changeover from that, but to be in mid January and pulling chucks of undercoat from him has been a bit surprising. We are getting into the coldest part of our winter here (was a lovely 2 degrees this morning) and I'm concerned about him when he's with us while we are out all day working around the property with snow on the ground and temps not getting out of the teens.

Mine have been shedding like nuts too. This year seems worse I think. They will shed more if they are indoors and go in and out. I just brush every few days and vacuum a lot!
