HI all,

I finally figured out how to upload my video so I could share it. I'm not sure if it's in the right format to watch. Let me know if it's not.

When Gracie saw the neuro last year, he said no to DM because she had been knuckling for over a year. Well things have gotten worse and Nov 3-4 she collapsed, vet evaluated her 11/5 and determined it wasn't "time" yet. Her tail came back to life to we agreed to give her more time. The dragging is getting worse. A lot of crying the past 2 days. It breaks my heart.

It's hard to know what course to take just from the video. Barker the Elder the first loved going to see our horse - the horse that would take turns as to who chased who with the dog. So long as that light was in her eyes with the horse we were OK. Jen, it may be hard but she will let you know - it's the mind/the brain more than the body.

I'm so sorry you are going through this as well, I know how heartbreaking it is. I don't think a day goes by that I don't break into tears. I try to remind myself that while it must be frustrating for the pup, but they are still happy and for the most part are enjoying their life. One thing I do is make Eli use his muscles as much as he can for as long as he can, so its good to see that Gracie is still able to get to where she wants to go.

Don't know if its DM or Spondylosis but I'm thinking they both are about the same result. Has her spine been x rayed? I'm keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Yes, xrays many times.

Thanks everyone. Today she walked 4 houses, but fell over a few times on the way home. I let her do what she wants. If I stop her I"m afraid that will break her spirit.

Oh my goodness. I am so sorry. She does seem like she is struggling but if she still wants to go out nd walk a bit she's still fighting.

If you really want to rule out DM, do the gene test.

If not At Risk results it is not DM.

DM also typically runs its course very quickly - from first symptom of "Knuckling" to loss of control of legs in 6-9 months or thereabouts according to research folks. our dog got it and showed first symptoms of dragging back paws in sept 2015, had to euthenize April 4, 2016 as he had lost all control or even knowledge of where his back end was by then.

Also one other DM symptom - absolutely no Pain in dog. Just loss of control.

Did the DNA test - came back carrier. That's what's upsetting me - no pain. She falls and doesn't cry out. She stands on her tail and tries to walk, doesn't realize she's on it. Found a bleeding lump between her toes and looks like she's lost weight so vet is coming today to check her out.

This may not be quite right. There appears to be two different types of DM. A multibreed DM which this test tests for, and the different GSD DM which the Clemmons test would test for. At least that is one line of thinking, since there is at least one example of a DM GSD that tested negative using the current test.

But none of that helps Gracie frown All those neuro diseases are so difficult. I'm so sorry you guys are dealing with this phase ((hugs))

If I remember right from when my guy developed it in Sept 2015, and I may not, Clemmons research was greatly discredited almost entirely by other DM researchers. At least that is what i can remember reading and talking to the group at Univ of Missuri then.
So unless what you said about 2 different types of DM has been substantiated by other different groups I wouldn't pay much attention to Clemmons.

Where did you hear about 2 different breed specific DM's? Might be interesting to read about and to see if there are other breeds with their own form of this terrible disease and see what if anything a mongrel made up the afflicted breeds might develop.

Also a Carrier with one mutated gene will not develop DM symptoms.

An xray will not show DM so if you do one it may show other diseases/conditions. My vet told us then that the diagnosis of DM in a living dog has to be done by eliminating other things. I think (ck with vet) that most other spinal/nerve things will show up in xray or maybe MRI?

OTOH, doesn't make much difference as DM is currently untreatable.

Great sympathy for both you and your dog!

This is an enlightening thread for which I hope to have no use. However, I, too, have much sympathy for those of you dealing with it or who have dealt with it.

Whatever the disease turns out to be, it is a terrible experience to see your dog wasting away and sliding downhill before your eyes and with nothing you can really do to help him/her!
