Well, the holidays are upon us starting tomorrow! And having received in the mail, two packages that contain well OK primarily bday & xmas BUT one was marked TG too.... I of course have opened at least one of the packages and it's subpackages.

Included was a bag of dog treats - artificial color I'm sure (no I only got a little ways on the ingredient list) and product of Thailand. In the past some one gave us two large rawhide pieces. OK my dogs are not going to get the opportunity to eat these. If the recent one had been presented in person, I would have explained why not. How do you tell people? My response has been to thank them. as in "the dogs appreciate..." These are not dog folks and obviously are not on top of what's good in the doggy junk food selection. If they are not feeding the treat to the dogs right then, do you explain to people? Or is it like that butt ugly holiday sweater, beautifully wrapped under the tree.... where you graciously (if you can muster grace) thank the giver and quietly deal with the not over the top enough to be wonderful sweater as in charity box.?

[yeah, ok so I'm using you as miss manners..."

Middle if they are not dog people it is really all about the thought that counts not the actual gift. I think it was really nice for non-dog people to give your dogs a present. I would take the treat to the local shelter.

Now if they are dog people I would at the right time politely try to explain the difference in junk treats and good treats. But at times I give Neilla stuff that has artificial color but still made in the US.

That's how I've been operating. Except I'm thinking more the landfill ... My primary thing is USA sourced and made and not rawhide.

The ones I purchase are not cute things -- more "body parts" that one is amazed they have conned us in to paying for. It would take an aware dog person to know that trachea slices were a prime present.

I have a problem with this too. Luckily now most people know that jazz is special in her needs. However, I still have dog owners at work that try to sneak her things, and generally they are things that are very bad for her. I'm with Val though on how to handle it. Non-dog people, generally I don't say anything unless it's a regular thing. For dog people, I try to educate without coming off the wrong way, which sometimes can be tricky.

That is thoughtful, but you might donate them to the shelter?

My conflict with donating them to any where (there are homeless people here with dogs) is that I don't think they are good for dogs or I would give them to my dogs. If they are not good for my dogs, why should I want the shelter to give them to their dogs? I feel conflicted about it because I hate waste but this stuff isn't good and is possibly bad. Ideally, I could tactfully (oh hell, I'm not strong on tact) educate people about appropriate dog treats...... Then they would not be buying this crap - if enough people quit buying it..... blah blah blah. Hence the initial "how the heck do you handle this one" question....

This is the season when all those conflicts come up --- how to discourage friends from sending me stupid junk that they buy at regular retail. I've tried and claim an exemption for myself because they get crap from the junk store. I've done pretty good with discouraging junk food. It did take the "Look, when you were trying to quit smoking, I didn't send you cigarettes and this is kinda like sending me cigarettes" (I eat anything compulsively. I don't need to like it. I eat it.) OK so there's more of my holiday angst than I intended.

If it is not rawhide stuff, but things like biscuits or soft treat I would donate to local shelter. Shelters and even some rescues just dump many different kinds of dog food in a big bin and mix it up. So if people feel they are doing good by donating better food or treats it just gets all mixed together.

I have had 4 dogs not from breeders, 3 were from the pound and 1 from a rescue. All of them had some issues from food, wouldn't eat good food because it didn't smell like junk or diarrhea. So make some poor shelter sole happy with some junk food.
