Our wild and crazy girl is gone, at just 9-1/2 years old. frown Halo started showing signs that something was wrong about the middle of January 2017. We went to several different vets and at first everyone thought it was an injury, possibly to her left hock. She'd been racing in flyball for 5 years, so that wouldn't have been unusual. We knew DM was a possibility, but since she stayed pretty much the same through that June. After numerous x-rays of her hip, back, and knee, an MRI, a nerve conduction study, two different ortho specialists and two different neurologists, all of which ruled out any possible cause for her symptoms, the consensus was that if she started to progress, it was DM. If she didn't, it was something else and we'd keep looking. A week or so later, she started to get worse, so we knew it was likely DM. I told my flyball team and officially retired her. We started swim therapy twice a week, which she loved. It wasn't going to make her better but it slowed down the muscle atrophy and was an outlet for fun and exercise she looked forward to so much.

By early this year, Halo could no longer walk without assistance. We got her a Help 'em Up harness, which was great as her back end continued to be less and less functional. Her sprits were still pretty good, her appetite was fantastic, and mentally she was still our Halo. A couple of weeks before we let her go, she developed pancreatitis. We tried treating it as our vet thought she'd be able to get past it, and and first she did seem to be getting better. But after an initial bump, she went back to not wanting to eat and it was a struggle to even get water in her. She looked miserable and clearly felt like crap, so on a Sunday afternoon we decided to take her in and say goodbye.

Halo raced in two last tournaments in March of 2017, one in NAFA, one in U-FLI, the two flyball organizations. The NAFA year runs from 10/1 to 9/30. Halo raced on our MultiBreed team, where all 4 dogs must be a different breed. Our club won as Regional Champions in the MB division that year, so Halo made one final contribution to the team before we had to quit flyball. She also made it to #19 of her breed in NAFA before dropping back to #21 as other dogs passed her by. The rankings are of all GSDs who have ever been registered in flyball, which goes back to 2001, I believe. She was one of just 28 GSDs to have achieved an Onyx award, which is 20,000 points of racing. Halo was one in a million, and we miss her so much.

It's still such a shock to hear that great talent and spirit can coexist with an untreatable degenerative condition. Halo was a champion and a beauty and now a very sad loss.

Rest in peace, little girl.

It was really hard to see her go from an athlete to an invalid. frown She was on the young side for DM too, her symptoms, although very mild at first, began less than 3 months after her 8th birthday. Some dogs develop symptoms much later. The last year of her life she lived for her twice weekly swims. Everyone loved her at the rehab clinic and were amazed at how fast she could swim and how well she used her back legs in the pool, even after she couldn't walk. She still had plenty of drive, especially for her ball, which they'd throw over and over in the pool.

Yes, she certainly was and a real trooper too. I'm so terribly sorry for your husband and you. hugging I'm thankful she had her swim therapy to look forward to and keep her active in the pool. Although young she was a marvelous GSD and epitomized everything in the breed. RIP sweet girl. angel

I loved seeing all of these pictures of Halo and her awards. She was really something: so pretty, a definite diva, a bit of a troublemaker, and a fierce competitor so full of life. She packed a lot of experiences, adventures, and accomplishments in the short time that she was here on this earth. I always enjoyed hearing about her escapades, and the picture of Halo with her butcher's knife is one that I'll always remember!

You and Tom gave her a wonderful, active and fulfilling life. I know it must be so hard that she is gone, but NOBODY could have made her happier and taken better care of her than you guys.

Rest in peace sweet Halo. gsdhalo
