It is with heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved Grimm van den Heuvel, sweetest boy, the love of my life.
I haven’t been participating here much, as I had a serious TBI in January, and also, Grimm’s health conditions occupied my energy. I am not able to see too well what I am typing. I do think of everyone here, and wish everyone well.
Now, onto Grimm...

Nov.17 2006- Oct. 22 2018.
My darling Grimm was a phenomenal dog, a true spiritual teacher. We had a challenging start, but together, we made it work.
Funny, sweet, pushy, silly, dominant, impulsive, powerful, intense, extremely high drive Czech boy, Grimm loved most everyone, especially kitties,
When I started working, he came with me to give PowerPoint presentations before a packed audience, proudly escorting me into the presentation theater in his working Service Dog vest, then chillaxing in his fabric folding crate while I presented. . He was never happier than when working! Grimm adored being my autism Service Dog.

When young, Grimmi transitioned to raw, and did great. His reactivity was something we managed, and got under good control using clear communication and no-nonsense methods. To be honest, the typical LAT, BAT, counter-conditioning methods inflamed his reactivity, no matter how far beyond his threshold we worked, they backfired hugely..... but demanding more of him, requiring work instead of any other option, finally was the secret key to helping Grimm relax and work so very happily near other dogs.Tail wagging, eyes soft, he was dancing by my side, relaxed and upbeat. Ultimately, this was an Uber-confident dog who only could relax when he thought the rules were strongly enough enforced.... which made him super waggy happy.

We easily earned our CGC last year in May! We had a blast in doggy classes. Grimm enjoyed training so very much!

Age brought my zesty boy spondylosis. We opted for rimadyl, regular acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Cosequin DS, fish oil, home treadmill, and a bit of laser. It worked for quite while, but at some point, we had an understanding, and I honored his communication. I suited Grimm up into his working vest, together we rode the bus (his favorite thing) and brought Grimmi in for his positive, peaceful, upbeat transition from this life, surrounded by his adoring vet tech fans, in a room full of laughter and love, celebrating who he was as he passed. Yes, I held him close and tenderly petted him as he passed, kissing him lovingly. His passing was just as he wanted it, all done his way.
My heart is broken. However, as it’s been about three weeks now, healing has slowly begun. Grimm, after all, taught me these things

Focus on the positive
You’re stronger than you think you are
Fortune favors the bold.

I go forward into my future, Grimm forever in my heart, always with me in spirit. I’m so very grateful for my sweet Grimmi, my Doofinator.

Thank you Val for your good sense years go, in giving kind guidance. Grimm had a life full of love, laughter, fulfilling work, adventures, hiking, games, and active fun.

Grimm, I am forever grateful for your lessons. I love you forever.

Patti,

You have shared so much with us about your Grimmi-from his crate arriving in the airport until this sweet farewell. The two of you did wonders together, each on his own side-always linked.

I am deeply sorry for your profound loss-but I will always be grateful for what the two of you gave us over the years.

I am so very sorry Patti... I feel like I knew Grimm from all of your stories, trials and tribulations over the years. You two were so suited for each other and there was a love and bond there that was easily recognized by all. My hearts breaks with yours. He was one of a kind... Run free and healthy sweet boy... angel

My dearest Patti, my heart aches for you but I know Grimm brought you much happiness. He was truly a noble dog in every sense of the word. He is pain free now running at the Bridge with all the other wonderful dogs who have gone before him. RIP sweet angel. gsdhalo

Patti,

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your Grimm. Oh, how I remember him so very well. He was a remarkable dog, and you and he really helped us understand raw and the benefits of raw feeding in the changes you experienced with Grimm. My heart breaks for you. What wonderful words to pass onto all of us per your Grimm:

Focus on the positive
You’re stronger than you think you are

I am sorry to hear about Grimm's passing. I enjoyed hearing about his adventures, rooting you on through your trials of finding how to work with his exuberance and knowing what a partnership the two of you had. My heart aches for you also knowing what your heart is going through. Run free from the pain Grimm and many hugs to you Patti. bloomrose

I'm sorry. He was beautiful, fun, intelligent, loving, and loved. I have always thought that the last gift we can give our dogs (if there is time), it to be there and let them go so they do not suffer. But there is another gift. We can ensure that we do not allow the transition to over-shadow the wonderful time that we enjoyed with them throughout their lives with us. It wouldn't hurt so bad if it wasn't so very good.

Thank you, everyone. What brings me some comfort is knowing that I didn’t wait until Grimmi was “on his last legs,” but brought him in at a mutually-agreed-upon time so he could “go out on top” as much as possible. He deserved that his transition day would be a happy day for him. Yes, I fell apart afterward, and the emotional pain for me continues, but this price to pay is an honor for the privilege of 12 years of so very much love, laughter, and adventures. What a gift we have to spare suffering to dogs who trust us. As much as I’m hurting now, I can’t help but feel grateful for the time with my sweet Grimmi. With such wonderful memories, the laughter he gave me continues, and helps the healing.

Oh Patty, I'm so sorry to hear about Grimm. I haven't been here for quite a while either but just logged in to search for information on rimadyl and other medications that might help Heidi with her hindquarter weakness which has suddenly accelerated. When I looked in the Topics column, I saw Grimm's name and my heart sank too. I'm in tears and choked up after reading your post.

Grimm was one of the most beloved and memorable GSDs on this board. I loved hearing about all his adventures and his silly escapades. We all fell in love with him just from seeing his pictures and hearing your vivid and funny stories about him. He was such a handsome, goofy guy, full of personality.

So many of the dogs that we've gotten to know so well over the years are getting to be elderly and many are passing away as time goes by. Each one that we read about breaks our hearts and makes us long for the days when many of us had recently joined the board to seek advice, give advice and sympathy, share stories and pictures, and generally get immersed in the all consuming world of German Shepherds. It was a wonderful time and you made it even more fun and interesting with your posts.

Take care, Patti, and know that many people are thinking of you. I hope that your health is improving as well. I hope you continue to post on the board. --Karin & Heidi
