Abby is nine now. We encounter many people throughout the day and many of them
want to say HI. Abby could care less. She is totally oblivious to anyone who wants
to greet or pet her. She doesn't even take treats.... just ignores everyone.
Same is true of their dogs .... totally disinterested.
She is not afraid nor tries to leave she just tolerates them.
I have no problem with this because I understand that Shepherds are 'supposed' to
be aloof. But sometimes I would like her to be more friendly.

I think she is fine the way she is. Better that than aggressive.

I am sorry that your dog is not more friendly when you would like her to be. Have you considered anything different that might have done in hindsight?

I mean did you meet the sire and dam, what were they like? Were the breeders breeding for, say service dogs, where the temperament you describe would be an asset? When you visited the litter, were all the puppies running about and jostling for attention or were some hanging back and avoiding?

When you were raising your puppy, would you have done anything differently, like would you encourage all comers when it came to socializing, petting, etc, or would you limit it to only folks you felt certain to give a positive, calm reaction to the puppy? I am not saying you did anything wrong, if you even raised the puppy yourself. Because there is no way to determine what a pup's adult personality will be when they are so young.

For example, letting everyone treat your dog like a pez dispenser might make some dogs super attuned to straingers, while other dogs might just show ordinary interest. And there is just no way of knowing for sure which dog is which.

But we can set ourselves up when looking for a puppy, by looking at temperament of sire and dam, and how they behave within the litter, and how we raise them. But you probably still can't squeeze a square peg into a round hole. Having a bunch of dogs, I can use some dogs this way, and other dogs that way, and match up each dog more to its strengths and drives, etc. with what I choose to do with them.

So I was just wondering when you look for your next pup, what you think you will do to get one that is more friendly. And then, maybe, is the dog aloof because you are? They pick up on stuff really well.

Indy was not a friendly dog. Not aggressive or anything, but didn't want to meet other dogs or other people. My main job was to protect her from others that thought all dogs should be friendly and want to be pet.

I did find that she started to do better with others when we got to the point she knew she was going to be forced into interactions and that I had her back, but she was never that friendly happy stereotype of a dog.

I understand your lament. Often I am not much of a people person, I can understand dogs being the same way.

Agreed.
As for socialization, she has been to a park where there are people and dogs every day
for nine years. I always left it up to her as to how she wanted to interact, never forced her
to interact and never tried to shelter her. Unless, of course, protecting her was appropriate.
My post was just an observation and I am happy that she is the way she is.
Might be a little happier if she was a little less aloof.
But, as I tell people, if I wanted a Golden or Lab temperament I would have gotten one of those.

You know it took Mayhem 3 or 4 years before she was comfortable approaching people. Late bloomer. She is still not an out going dog but she is also a GSD, not a lab.

Like us people - some dogs are much more outwardly friendly than others. Many GSDs are what some folks would call too friendly and sociable. As some have said our standard call for aloof but aproachable and that is the breed goal. A pro trainer once told me about his world class IPO competitor "He doesn't have to LIKE other dogs and people, just learn how to ignore them!" And he also told me the same about my own male GSD from a top US show kennel!

Sounds like your dog is good in that way - just enjoy him the way he is and accept not all dogs need or want to be friends with everyone.

BTW - the dog we have now is just the opposite - thinks everyone is her best friend or will be as soon as she can greet them. Interesting training her out in public!

I would say that she meets the standard. Aloof and approachable, never aggressive or exuberant.

Thanks, everyone, for your input.
