Kamahi has developed Renal Failure after receiving his Zoledronate infusion a week and a half ago. frown Itís a long story thatís been full of frustration and endless crying, but weíve got a management plan at the very least. For now. Iím really not sure what to feed him, though. The Vet said I should be okay to stick with his I/d formulated food by Science Diet, but Iím really wanting to put him on something a lot better for him. A food he used to do very well on (with his chronic Pancreatitis issues) was Solid Gold, but as much as Iíd like to switch him back, Iím just not sure if it would throw his kidneys out of whack. frown Thoughts? help https://www.chewy.com/solid-gold-wolf-king-bison-brown-rice/dp/120359

Food for thought as well, I switched him to I/d food due to a severe Pancreatitis episode last October/November (long story, unrelated to that dog food), and his Cancer was diagnosed mid-June this year. I could be wrong, but Iím highly suspicious thereís a correlation going on there. thinking

There's no such thing as a bad dog. It's the owner behind the dog.

Your vet should be able to come up with a home-cooked diet that would work well. This is remembering several dogs ago, some what 20 years back.... The diet involved rice, eggs, calcium (is in powdered tums if I remember correctly) and other stuff. I'd cook up a batch, refrigerate it, and feed for several days.

On the other hand, while we've grown accustomed to bashing SD, their specialty foods are processed to actually meet the needs of dogs with specific conditions.

On your correlation thoughts, hard not to think that way but... dogs get old, systems wear out and it could be coincidence instead of cause or contributor.

Anyway, we did the cook-it-at-home stuff. We also did doggie dialysis for several rounds. My dog was about 15 when these issues surfaced. When I became aware of the issues with the dialysis, I stopped that. This was over 20 years ago and they may have made improvements with the treatment.

I am wishing you luck with Kamahi's health.

I'm not sure what the school of thought is now on protein and kidney issues. For the longest time I remember they wanted to limit protein in the diet. Then it seemed protein is ok??? Again, I don't know the latest on this but did see that the protein in the Science Diet ID kidney formula has only 12% protein whereas the Solid Gold has 22% protein. I would ask the Vet before making any changes.

I wish you the best and hope Kamahi does great on whatever you choose.

Me too. I really hope you have good communication with your vet. If Kamahi can be screened for kidney function as you adjust diet you get information you want.

Thinking about you both,
MJ

Any updates on our dear sweet Kamahi? I so hope he is responding to the treatment plan and is doing better.
