I hope you all are well. I noticed about 2 weeks ago my 5 month old puppy was walking a bit weird. I got nervous and took him to the local animal hospital where he was seen by a vet and surgeon. I was told he is walking the way he is because he is growing so fast and his ligaments are growing at a faster rate than his bones and muscles. They said this would clear in a few months. However, i am still nervous looking at him walk. He also doesn't stand on his hind legs. Oh and he weighs 70 lbs, i feed him 4 cups a day, 2 and 2. Here is a video of him walking, what do you think?

I watched the video several times. It concerns me. Are you feeding him puppy food? If so, I would switch to an Adult food, just make sure there's not too much calcium in the food.

Five months and 70lbs is large. I assume the vets checked the hips. I've seen pano before (when they grow to fast) but I've never seen a dog so lame. I would make sure your also giving him Glucosamine supplements.

Did they say when you should see improvements? You might need to watch the exercising to make sure he doesn't hurt himself.

Please keep us updated. Did you get him from a breeder? Have you shown the video to them? What did they say?

Did the Vet do xrays? Did they check the spine? You said he was checked by a surgeon as well? What did they say? Why was he referred to a surgeon?

I watched the video some more and it appears the front right leg is affected as well. The good news is he's not dragging his toes. If this were my dog I might want to get a second opinion, but hopefully I'll know more when you answer my other questions.

Did this start overnight, or is it getting worse?

I've been feeding him Rachael Ray Nutrish Food for Puppies, Bright Puppy. They said improvements should be in a few months or so. As far as exercise its only been walking for about 30-60 minutes a day. The animal hospital didn't do any x-rays as they felt it wasn't needed. The surgeon said he had seen this many times and its because hit tendons are growing faster than his muscles and bones. It seemed to of happened over night. He also doesn't seem to be in any pain, just very clumsy while walking and what not. Also it doesn't seem to be getting worse.

I am so sorry you and your pup are going through this. I would definitely get him on an adult food or at least a large breed specific puppy food.

Did you show the breeder the video? I would. I'm thankful he is not in pain, but with this gait I would continue to limit exercise and it goes without saying No Jumping. I general rule for jumping I believe it to wait until they are two.

I wish I had more answers for you. I'm sure others will chime in.

Poor guy.

I'm no expert on this sort of thing, but I would definitely consider getting X-rays done, and as Rosa suggested change his kibble to a grain-free large breed puppy or Adult all life stages food. I am also wondering if he would benefit from hydrotherapy. Other, more experienced members will be able to help you better.

Good luck and I'm sorry you and Thor are having to deal with this.

I agree about getting X-rays done. I would want to make sure there's not something wrong. He's a pup, anything could have happened. This just doesn't look normal in any way.
