Hello!

Anybody having issues with their GSD gaining weight? My pup has been between 55-60 lbs for almost 4 months now and he just turned one. His brother is a good 76 pounds. He consistently has loose/mushy stools and eats around 5 cups a day in two feedings. During the Summer we are going to start stretching the 5 cups and feeding 3-4 times a day to see if that helps. He is on pedigree large dog kibble, because that is what his Breeder had him one. We have tried at least two times to transition foods, but his stools just get looser. This seems to be the kibble that sits the best with him, although his stools are never nice and firm. Iím thinking this has something to do with him not gaining weight. Any thoughts?

Hello and welcome to the boards. I too, have a young GSD that isn't gaining much weight despite everything I've tried. I've switched food, added everything imaginable, nothing has worked long term. Then I have to remind myself that a slimmer dog is actually so much better than an overweight one. The standard for a male GSD is 85lbs (at least it was last I checked), so your pup is likely on target.

Have you had him checked by a Vet to make sure there's no medical reason for his lack of gaining weight? That would be an important step. Maybe a fecal test is in order to make sure he doesn't have parasites.

Pedigree is not the best of foods, but I'm sure there are many dogs that do fine on it. I do find that German Shepherd Dogs tend to need a better quality food so you might want to shop around for something a bit better. While a better food might cost more, you actually have to feed less of it so it might not be that big of a difference cost wise. If you do transition him be sure to go very slowly, you don't want to make a change that quickly. Also you could add pumpkin to his diet. That might help firm up his stools.

Thanks for the feedback!

We just went to the vet today and she recommended to try and break up his feedings to see how that works. In August, we will most likely get the digestion test, so we are trying to gain weight until then. She doesnít seem too worried, but then again, she said that he is definitely skinny. Glad to know that there are other people that are going through something similar.

Thanks again!

Sounds like a great plan. Let us know how it goes. Can you post a picture of your boy? My boy is under the thread Kody bear.

Welcome to the Forum.

First let me say that all pups in a litter do not grow the same or at the same rate. Example was the litter my DeeDee was from, DeeDee was a skinny little girl who at full maturity was 65 lbs. Her sister from that litter was huge she was over size and weighed 90+ lbs. This was a big difference, but I wanted to let you know just because they are from the same litter, they aren't the same.

I would try cutting back the 5 cups of food a day to 4 or 4/12 and 3 times a day if possible. Six months ago we got a Great Pyrenees she was under weight at 66 lbs and they were pushing 6 cups of food a day, she had very soft stools and at times mucous in the stool. I tried a couple of foods until I found one that agreed with her. But first I put her on a home cooked diet of cooked and drained ground beef and Oatmeal to let her system slow down and heal up. Then I slowly added the new food. She is probably at 80ish pounds and only eats 5 cups of food a day. More food isn't always the trick to get dogs to gain weight because the digestive system speeds up and doesn't pull the nutrients from the food.

I once had a female with terrible allergies and mushy poop. The vet suggested a lamb and rice and it worked wonders ( along with allergy shots every ten days). I feed Nature's Recipe and give extra chicken and beef. Check out dogfoodanalysis.com
