Developing gradually over the last year.
Abby has an anxiety attack when we take her to
one of our walking places. E.G: park; rail trail; woods trail, etc.
She will be 9 in July.
She doesn't get them when we are on a drive elsewhere, unless she
thinks we are going to a 'walking place'.
Once we get there and start walking she usually takes a dump almost
immediately. After a couple minutes she settles down and is fine.
She is fine on the ride home.
We have been going to the same places her entire life and never
had any traumatic occurrences.
It's a real head scratcher.
She is in excellent health.

Some times as dog age they react differently than they did when they were young. They feel more vulnerable. I would try an herbal calming formula or even the Thundershirt. It could be her eye sight or her hearing that things are different for her.

Anxiety or excitement? My dogs get very hyper in the car if they think they are going to a hiking spot. Caleb gets very vocal when we drive through heavily wooded areas - like he thinks we should stop and take a walk there. Don't know that it is really something to worry about.

It is anxiety, not excitement. She shakes/trembles and continues trembling
when she gets out of the car. She is definitely not happy. Her head and ears
are down and she walks hesitantly at first. It takes a few minutes for her to relax.

Can you try a different route? A different parking area?

Maybe there is something going on at that particular entrance/parking area?

This week at tracking at a certain point the most reliable dogs had a peculiar problem - nothing that the humans could detect but likely something the dogs did.

Tried those, thanks.
Route or parking lot doesn't matter, she knows where she is.
GSDs are smart.
I will just have to put up with it since she isn't in any danger.
Maybe she will realize that .... even though we have going to
those places for 8 years.

I wonder if there's a smell she picks up on that either reminds her of something unpleasant or for some odd reason she doesn't like. Definitely a head scratcher. thinking

OK I just re-read your initial post --- she's anxious until she takes a dump. In these locations. From here, it's almost as though she's decided, "Gotta go! Gotta go! Gotta go before we walk!" Perhaps her "aging" bowels are "inspired" by knowing what's in store?

Don't know if there's anything to be done about it. At one point Barker the Elder the first, began to need "relief" before going to the barn (horse boarded at that time). She could not always be pursuaded to get it out of the way before we loaded up. That would mean I would need to stop after driving a couple of blocks - either to get her out or to deal with the offending result... So OK maybe you should be happy that she waits until she's there??????
