I just wanted to start a thread on my dear sweet Eli. He's 11 years old. A recent vet visit showed his weight at 126 lbs which is pretty steady. He's not overweight, he's huge! Of course, being so large is extra hard on his joints eek

Medically, he has osteoporosis in his front elbows and DM in the back. He has an enlarged heart, small irregular kidneys and his liver isn't exactly 100%.

Despite all this my little trooper keeps on going! His spirit and love for life continues. He plays with his brother Kody and even shows interest in toys again. So how are we doing this?? Let me share in case it can help anyone else. Please understand that each case is different and in so many ways I've been blessed with his responses.

For the DM and the dragging of his back feet I had shoes fitted with metal plates so they (the metal plates) scratch the ground instead of his feet. Without the plates his shoes would only last one or two walks as the rubber would just get worn away. Our walks are pretty limited now, I don't want to go far from the home in case he were to go down. But he so enjoys his walks.

His back legs are pretty wobbly and have been for some time. The good news is that it hasn't gotten worse. In addition to walks I give him massages and stretches and range of motion excercies each day.

His fecal incontinence is pretty much under control with the meds (mentioned in that thread) and the behavior modification. He's really got the barking and pooping down to an art!!! I feed him on a strict time schedule and try to never leave him alone for more than a few hours. It's not so much about me having to clean up a mess but I don't want him feeling bad about having an accident.

Pain management has been a top concern for me. He's on Adequin injections monthly. He also takes Gallaprant and Tramadol daily. Recently I started him on CBD. I bought some pills from Canna-Pet but also found some cookies for dogs at the medical marijuana dispensary. We've just started the cookies and so far so good. I also have him on Glucosamine supplements with turmeric and Cholodin for mental awareness.

I took him to the Vet recently for a pain check and am thrilled that we seem to have things under control.

Eli has been a wonderful and devoted friend for 11 years. I am so thankful to be able to pay him back with the loyalty he has given me. I'm hoping that something about his journey might help others. I will continue to update as I learn more and am open to any suggestions others may have. I wish he could do some water based therapy but with his fecal incontince that is not an option.

Rosa, you are doing some amazing things for your beloved boy. I just started Sammy on CBD oil also. I bought the human version because it's more concentrated and is cheaper than buying a brand made just for animals. This sounds weird since I live in a state where I can buy anything, but I ordered from Lazarus Naturals (Seattle based) based on many recommendations from people using it for dogs. It's a very good brand.

How long has he been dragging his feet?
Not want to bring up a terrible subject but the course of DM (in both of our pups that had it) is usually only 6-9 mo till it has affected chest and etc. muscles.

Also DM is absolutely painless for the dog - they lose control of muscles as the disease progesses up the spinal cord from tail toward head.

Best of luck to and your boy! That is a terrible disease for dog and owner to have to go through. Your boy has a tremendously loving owner, it is clear!

Thanks for your kind responses. Eli was diagnosed about a year and a half ago (I'll have to look that up for everyone) after all other conditions were eliminated through testing. This is why I'm sharing this. NOT that I have the cure, oh how I wish that were true. But just to share a little bit of hope that we've had.

By the way the picture above was taken when he got a new pair of shoes but before I put the plates on them. I'll share a picture of that soon, got to take one. The problem was all the shoes would be torn apart and worn down in the front from all the dragging. I had first taken the shoes to a shoe repair place hoping they would fit them with some type of plate but they were no help at all. I then thought of a sheet metal worker and that maybe they could help.

Went down with the shoes and a lot of positive vibes and conveinced the guy he could do it!!! It wasn't hard, I just needed some plates I could cement on to the end. I've since worked with one other sheet metal worker and both have been amazing. Eventually the plates would wear off and break but I keep extras around and am always able to attach a new plate.

I'm amazed every day that Eli is still walking. With his osteoarthritis in the front a cart for the back is not an option. He has gone down in the back at times but we manage. I call it 'the power of Mom' when I'm actually able to lift him up and get him back on his feet, but it works.

Thanks for the recommendation Kris, I'll check them out. Right now were using Holistic Hound but I'm new at this so I'm sure I'll need to try different things before we find what is best for him.

I would really love to get him off, or at least cut down on the amount, the Gallipant (sp?) as its so darn expensive for a dog his size. Unfortunately, there is no generic for this and with Eli's kidney/liver issues its the best RX I can get for him.

I would love to hear how Sammy is doing on it so please keep us posted.

Rosa, are you getting the galliprant rebates. I got $20 back for each of Buddy's scripts. If Eli has a higher dose, it could be $30.

Go to elanco.com to check it out. The code is galliprant30.

It helped Buddy so much. His cbd oil was in capsules by PetReleaf. I was fortunate to be able to order them through the store where I worked, so it was less expensive for me. Still about $58.00 though each month.

I would have done anything for him, just as you do for Eli. Here a lucky guy to be part of your pack.

I wasn't aware of that, thank you so much Bonnie!!! Every little bit helps and that will be a big help to me! Eli gets two 60mg tabs a day so I'm thinking that would be 30.00 back each month groovy I'm heading over to that website now!

Eli is so handsome, so dignified looking. It's hard to imagine the years have gone by so fast and with the ravages of time our beloved dog are aging and infirm.
I read the list of vitamins and meds you're giving him and I can tell that he is in the best care he can have. Working with a sheet metal worker was a brilliant idea. I look forward to pictures of his shoes with the plates on them.
Hugs to you Rosa you are an excellent Mom.

Eli might enjoy the use of a wonderful harness I have used and can attest to it's immediate relief.

Simple enough, but really helped Hugo.

Thanks for the suggestion. I recently brought out a harness I had bought for Shiloh but its a bit small for Eli. I've got it out now and plan to try to retrofit it for Eli. If it works I can use it on him, otherwise I will need to buy a size bigger but this is a great suggestion.

Right now my big thing is pain management. I'm really hoping to get him off or at least a reduction in the amount of Galliprant that he takes. Its just so expensive for a pup his size. I have began CBD oil. Of course, its all a learning experience. I originally bought from Canna-Pet but found out they aren't that good. So I went with one that Kris recommended.

The big problem with pain management is that Eli has both Kidney and Liver issues and as a result, he can't take most pain meds. So far I haven't found an affordable option which is why I'm so hopeful with the CDB oils.

I assess him each day, trying to figure out what's working and what's not. But if anyone has any other suggestions for pain relief for a dog with kidney and liver issues please don't hesistate to let me know.

I wish I knew something for that big beautiful Eli, but I don't. From my own experience-pain medications are hugely variable from individual to individual.

If there is something that will work for Eli-Rosa will find it.

I hope you all get some pain relief. I mean Eli has to keep Kodi in line.

Well, no luck with new meds for Eli but I'm still really hopeful with the CBD oils. I've also been looking into the benefits of heat for osteoarthritis and my next project is to put together some leg warmers for Eli's front legs!

The past few days I have been cutting back on the Galliprant. Unfortunately, its not worked at all!! Eli has been struggling more to get up and tends to poop when he does. So were back on the Galliprant.

It's taken a few days but thankfully we've got Eli's pain under control again with the Galliprant. Today he had an amazing walk, he so enjoyed it. I think he could have gone further but one block down and back is enough for any one time for now. It was so nice seeing him so happy.

We've been having temps in the 70's so not much use for his leg warmers right now, but I'm ready for when the temps cool. I'm going to make some with pockets that I can put heated rice packs in for when I give him his massage. I think the extra heat will feel really good for him.

OMG, Eli just jumped up on the sofa....yes he jumped!!!!!!!!!!! Both back legs jumped party I can't believe it!!!! He can walk up onto the sofa but I was watching him and he used both back legs to JUMP!!!!!!! I am so doing the happy dance!!!!!!!!! groovy

I've really increased his massages so maybe its really paying off. I'm just so happy. Even though he can walk onto the sofa he doesn't do it often anymore as he's just too uncertain, but this time he jumped right up there!!!!!

They are amazing creatures-how lucky we are to share our lives with them.

Every single thing you do for Eli will be good for him-and enjoy it all.

I am so enjoying every moment with Eli. His spirit and love keeps pushing me to want to do more for him. I love him so much. I just can't believe what I saw. smile Both legs worked together without hesitation. I haven't seen that in ages.

Eli is doing amazingly well and Mama is off with a new idea on how to help him more.

I'm thinking of making a custom type cart for him. The problem with carts on the market is that they support the back of the dog while letting the dog walk with their front legs. Well Eli can't do one of these because his front legs are likely worse than his back. So this got me thinking. What would help Eli more would be something that would support his body while allowing all legs to move as much as possible.

That's when I thought Eli really could use a full body support. Something that would take the weight off him while allowing him the freedom of walking. Your going to have to use a bit of your imagination to 'see' what I'm thinking but bare with me on this.

I'm thinking my sheet metal friend could use a piece of sheet metal to mold the bottom of Eli's body. The measurements would have to be exact and I would need to pad the top that would come in contact with his body. From that we could attach legs and wheels. We could make it so that I slip it under him and then somehow move a lever and lock it into place so that its snug against his body. The idea is again to take the weight off his legs and yet use his legs for walking.

What do you think??

Also, my cart would have four wheels instead of the two to give him the stability he needs.

Before you put too much money in this, check out handicappedpets.com
The do have 4 wheel carts for four or front end support. And they have an excellent reputation.

Just a quick update on Eli. For the most part he has been doing very well. The past three days have been hard. I've been staying up late watching the Olympics which causes me to sleep late in the morning. This has thrown off his meds/eating schedule and he's had a lot of accidents because of it. I'm really hoping to get up on time tomorrow and get him back on schedule.

Today he walked his longest walk in a long time. He was amazing happyboogie I'm just so proud of his every step groovy Later I took the pups for ice cream and he didn't have an accident in the car!!! Good news all the way around.

He's also been catching the ball and playing with his little brother, Kody.

So except for the pooping, I think he's doing great. Hopefully, by getting him back on schedule that will improve as well.

Absolutely fabulous that big brother eli can play with the little (gorgeous) squirt baby brother.

Somehow, I think Ms Rosa, your home is a german shepherd dog wonderland.

have fun,

It is remarkable that Eli is able to play with his little brother Kody. Kody can be a real pesty little brother, at times getting right in Eli's face and mimicking him. Its funny, Eli will bark and Kody will bark back, Eli will whine and Kody whines back.

I think having Kody around has been good for Eli. Sure sometimes he's a pain in the behind to Eli but for the most part they have bonded so well.

And yes, our home is set up with the pups in mind. Like so many of your homes toys are everywhere, toy boxes are filled and in almost every room. We have board games and plenty of room to do doggie stuff. When they are happy then I am happy.

Another note, I've gotten Eli back on schedule with his meds. Since I'm hoping this thread might somehow help others, I've learned its critical to have him on a strick meds and feed schedule. Just being off an hour or two threw him into a tailspin.

A couple of thoughts here -
On the cart idea - use a cloth sling to support the body - The sheet metal is just a problem in several respects - fit; - access as getting the dog in and out of it; - weight (you will need to move this thing around); - portability/storage - a metal sling is going to be more difficult to collapse.

On the play with Cujo thing (reflecting on Kody's reactivity) -- you might want to look more closely at their interactions and see how "Cujo" has begun to expect other dogs to act/react to him -- how he approaches Eli and Eli him.

Thanks Middle. I did look at the carts Bonnie referred me to and have bookmarked the site. Still not sure what I will do. I'd love to take some of the weight off his failing legs but putting it somewhere else might not help either. At this point, I just have to try to keep him as mobile as possible for as long as possible.

As far as how Kody (aka Cujo) interacts with Eli versus other dogs there really is no comparison. Kody and Eli make a lot of noise but its happy noise, nothing like how Kody reacts to other dogs. But thanks for thinking of that.

Kody can be a pesky little brother that's for sure. I just love the way they interact.

I'm afraid to say it but it appears Eli is drinking more water lately. I'm going to keep an eye on it. He's also starting to loose his urine a little as he sleeps. Right now our next step is to wait and observe. I'm going to need some time to figure this out. Thankfully, he seems to be doing really well. He seems happy and enjoys his walks and time outside with Kody and I.

Just a quick update here on Eli. Thankfully, his increase in water consumption ended pretty quickly. I tend to think he's still passing small amounts of urine in his sleep, but clean up is a small price to pay when I get to share my days with such a dear sweet friend.

He's been wanting to take longer walks lately which is really nice. I just kind of go wherever he chooses in the neighborhood. He so enjoys those walks.

There is some exciting news. Last week I was determined to save all I could on his meds. I was paying $514.40 a month, but was actually able to get the bills down to $229.19, a savings of $285.21 per month happyboogie

That is big news! A savings of over $280 is no small change. wink Glad to hear Eli is taking longer walks and enjoying them. As long as he's a happy camper the small urine messes are tolerable.

Thank you both so much. Having Eli around is just such a gift. I know everything he does requires more effort for him but that little guy (yes, little guy) has a heart of gold.

As far as the savings on his meds, a big part of that is getting three of his meds through Walgreens Prescription Savings Club for pets. I got lucky when I called as the lady I first talked to told me about the plan. The next day when I went to sign up everyone was really confused about what I was talking about. I guess its not very well known at the Walgreens here in town. It took awhile but I was able to sign up for it. But I wanted to put that out there in case it helps someone else.

The other two I shopped around on line for the best price. I'm just thrilled with the outcome. Some of these drugs are so expensive but there was no way I was going to let my Eli down. The fact that he can still walk is huge. He gives me 110% every day, he deserves nothing less in return.

He is loosing some urine as he sleeps, but that's ok. I don't think its anything I need to fix, I just need to make sure he doesn't get a rash or something like that in case he lays in it too long.

Yes, Eli still being here is definitely a gift and I know you don't take it for granted. Even if he does require more effort it's so well worth it especially as you said, he has a heart of gold. hugging

I remember when Sean was on cyclosporine I called everywhere to find the lowest price. At that time Costco gave me the best deal. It's nice to know that Walgreens offers a Prescription Savings Club for pets. Thanks for the tip!

This morning when I took Eli for this walk, he was limping. But Eli limps as he walks all the time, it wasn't anything different. He didn't seem to want to walk far and that was fine, it's all about what he wants to do. Afterwards, we sat and laid together on the sidewalk in the front of our home. I fed him treats and rubbed his belly. We layed on our backs looking at the clouds. I just love time like this with my boy.

But I was massaging him and I noticed his left front leg was so much bigger than his right!!! I checked it really carefully and sure enough, it was nearly twice the size. I took him to the Vet who seemed to think it was a soft tissue issue. It didn't have the appearance of an abcess but she did put a small needle in it thinking if it was she would get pus out. Nothing came out.

They then did x rays which didn't reveil anything new.

The meds he normally takes are the same for this so there was nothing new given, She suggested I ice it which I have done once and will repeat when I get off here. The problem just now is he really had a hard time walking to his food bowl just now.

They shaved the area looking for bit marks but there were none. With this much swelling should I do more????

Rosa, I'm not sure what more you can do at this time. I'd go with Bigeloil horse liniment rather than ice because I wouldn't have to keep changing it or forget it and have frost bite (did that to myself once....)

Rosa, I would try alternating cold and warm packs. Alternating heat and cold helps the tissue to expand and contract to help reduce swelling. Cold First then Heat.

Thanks Val, I wondered about the heat. I will start alternating them now!!! It is still really swollen and he's really struggling to walk. I gave him extra Tramadol this morning hoping that will help.

Thanks everyone. Just a quick update. His leg is still really swollen but I think the swelling has gone down some... not a lot, but some. I'm doing the cold/heat treatments and I think the increase in Tramadol has helped some.

He's able to walk a little bit better than yesterday but it's not very comfortable for him. Still that is better than yesterday. He did wake up in the living room today wanting a cookie. He got up, slowly stumbles over to me in the dining room with 'that look' he shows when he really wants a cookie. Of course, he got his cookie. He always gets his cookie. I was thankful to see him do that today thinking he must be feeling a bit better.

Rosa, glad hot/cold + meds is helping. Keep in mind horse liniment can be found at pet supply stores, too. Or purchased on line.

Thankfully, the swelling has gone down quite a bit and Eli is able to move a bit better. groovy He wanted to try a walk today but I made him stop when we got to the sidewalk. I felt it was way too soon for him to be walking and there still is some swelling that needs to go down. I'm still giving him the increased amount of Tramadol.

I know I forgot to mention it earlier, but the Vet did take some cells from whatever came out when she poked it with a needle. We will have those results in about a week. I tend to think its like she said, a soft tissue injury. With cold/heat the swelling has gone down.

I did have to make some changes in the house here. At night he is now limited to the kitchen, part of the hallway and my bedroom. I block off the rest. This way its much easier for me to keep clean and yet it gives him some choices.

His spirits are great. Today I took Kody to daycare so Eli had me all to himself this afternoon. I gave him a special treat to chew on and lots of yummy treats to enjoy. We so enjoy our time together.

Well he's looking at me right now so I guess it's time for his massage. Better go but thanks for reading.

Very good news!

You know it's funny-but it gets to be a real privilege to take our dogs for a walk-there's a lot to be thankful for.

Could use some good thoughts and prayers. Eli went down three times on our little walk today. Later he tried to get up on the sofa and he fell back and on the floor. Not sure if its just a bad day for him or the progression of the DM, I fear it might be the later.

Stopping in to stay hello and I hope Eli is doing well. Gracie had unexplained swelling. We thought it could be due to jumping off the couch and jamming her shoulder. It would be so much better if they could talk.

Sending love and hugs.

Yeah, I'm thinking Eli took the stairs wrong. It's just three steps but I put some mats at the bottom to cushion his landing. His leg is a little swollen still but much better.

Every day I wonder how much longer.

Looks like I got so excited with the pictures posted last time that I forgot to give an update. Prior to that I was wondering how much longer we would have left.

Well, good news. It was a soft tissue injury. The swellings almost gone. It's still swollen, but much better than what it was. He's back to his 'normal limp' but without any additional hesitation or favoring one front leg over the other.

His back legs are hanging in there. Usually we don't go too far on our walks, but we always end it by siting on the sidewalk in front of the house and spending time together. I want him (and me) to have ton's of wonderful memories of special time we've spent together. We always have 'our little talks' then while I shower him with treats and petting.

I have no doubt that he's enjoying his life.

As far as the fecal incontinence, that seems to have gotten worse. It's not completely out of control yet. But there are many days when he poops in the house more often than he did outside that day. I'm going to call the Vet next week and see if we can increase the meds I use for this. Hopefully I can and the increase will work.

So I'd say he's doing better. As you could see in the pictures he's getting around pretty well. He's an amazing friend and I love him so much.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad "better". Afterall, fecal incontinence is inconvenient but not life threatening in the usual sense. ...

I'm so use to it now, it rarely even bothers me. A lot of the time he'll give me 'that look' and I'll know he's gone. I just get up and clean it up. While it bothers him a little bit, I think we've both gotten use to the routine. I know if given the choice he would never potty like he does, he just doesn't have the choice.

I've got this boy as long as I can keep him walking and am able to keep him pain free for the most part.

I felt exactly the same way with Sean when he had fecal incontinence. They are such proud dogs and simply can't help it. We are there to support them in any way we can. hugging

Eli is doing pretty good. We had some warm weather which seemed to help. Wish it had lasted longer but the rain and cooler weather has returned.

We attempted to take the boys for ice cream this weekend but Eli just couldn't get in the car. It really was heartbreaking. Of course, I went and got his ice cream but it was so hard to put him back in the house and then driving away. teary

He took a nice long two block walk the other day but since then he's been reluctant to go anywhere. I put his shoes and leash on but he doesn't want to go far from the property. That's fine with me, as long as we have time together.

I'm sure it must have broken your heart to go for ice cream and not be able to take Eli along. frown But I'm happy to hear you brought a "doggie" bag home and he's doing pretty good overall. Gotta love that guy! wub

I happened upon a great suggestion that I wanted to share. You know how our seniors that lay around a lot get callouses on their elbows? Eli had developed these. This person suggested Swim Arm Bands. I found these at the Dollar Store, blew them up and put these on his elbows. Works great and takes all that pressure off! You can use more or less air depending upon the size of the pups legs. smile

I'm thrilled to give this update. Can't say I understand what's going on yet but its worth celebrating. groovy

About six days ago I was late at giving Eli his many meds. I thought 'lets try to go off and see how he does'. Since that time Eli has gone outside to potty all but one time!!!! And that one time he was struggling to get up so I just encouraged him to go right there.

He's been much more engaged and frequently goes outside just to lay down in the sun or shade. He just seems so much happier.

I'm so happy to have my days filled with the love of my boys.

Eli began having problems after my last post saying how well he was doing. Its nothing major, but we have had to return to all the meds. He's really having a problem holding his poop now, but he's still able to walk. He still enjoy's outings outside, he likes playing board games and watching the girls.

The hardest times with senior dogs are those like you are experiencing. Rollercoaster days, weeks.

Sometimes we forget to hold most tightly to those wonderful, good days and not cloud them with worry.

Eli has the best of you, your love. And he gives the same to you. And all he knows is his happiness.

The senior Rollercoaster is really hard. One day they are Super Doggie and the next day is in the dumps.

Thank you all for your kind wishes and love for my precious Eli. Yeah, the roller coaster ride is hard, but as long as Eli is willing to ride so am I.

Eli amazing me each and every day. Did you folks know that when I come home he still ALWAYS greets me at the door!!! No matter where he is at the time I always finds a way to be there every time I open the door. Now that's dedication!! wub

Eli met with our new Vet today. I really like him. Kody saw him yesterday and today was Eli's turn. Getting him in the car was hard. Its painful for him and that just tears at my heart. I did park the car in the street, right along the curb. The first attempts didn't work. I was still several inches from the curb and there was just no way to get him in. I moved the car so that my wheels where right along and touching the curb. I was hoping he could just walk in, but it still took some time. He tried earlier and remembered the pain so he really wanted nothing to do with it. I'd say about 10-15 minutes later I was finally able to get him into the car.

But I got him to the Vet. The old Vets failed to send over the X-rays which really sucked but he had reviewed Eli's previous bloodwork. He said based on the bloodwork its not clear that Eli has a liver problem. We have run new blood work today so we'll discuss that tomorrow, but this might open up a whole world of possibilities for Eli and the meds he can take. The doctor is even talking about possible using some type of steroid to help build up his muscle mass again. This would be so helpful. If he had more strength he would be able to get around so much better and it might even help with the fecal incontinence.

So does anyone have any experience with steroids and dogs? Please share if you do.

It took two of us to get him back in the car and frankly he was exhausted and just laid there. Since he had pooped while they were taking his blood, I figured we had time to run by McDonalds for an ice cream which we did. I offered it to him several times on the way home but he wasn't ready for it, but when we got home and out of the car he ate the whole thing!!!! OMG, it felt so good to be able to take him for ice cream.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that steroids can enhance Eli's longevity and at the very least make him more comfortable. crossedfingers
So happy he was able to enjoy a delicious ice cream treat too.

Rosa,

Please take things easy. You know Eli better than anybody, so you can guide a lot of this. Dear lady, Eli climbed (somehow) in the car at home, so you know what he can do. You know. Come on-he trusts you all the way-where else does he get ice cream?

Steroids are heavy guns-so ask a lot of questions.

all the best,
Mary Jane

Thank you all for your kind and caring words. My dear sweet Eli is doing well. We've been back in the backyard playing ball daily and he is really enjoying it. I toss the ball into his mouth and a lot of the time he can catch it!! fetch It really doesn't matter how many times he catches it but its that look of engagement that makes it so worth while. He might not be able to run and chase the ball anymore but his heart is still in it.

I've got a lot to learn about steroids. I need to understand the benefits versus the risks, what our goals are and what we might expect from the results. Right now though, Eli's blood work is coming back really good!!! The doctor is running another Thyroid type test and I'll get those results tomorrow. Actually, I think he might be retesting something to do with the liver,,, can't remember if liver or thyroid.

I used to do the catch game with Rica when she couldn't play fetch anymore, too. There were times when she catch the ball and then sort of pop it out of her mouth. It would bounce back to me. I swear she was doing it on purpose so we were really playing catch.

Glad to hear that Eli is doing well.

That's a great Rica memory wub I'm just thrilled to see him interested in playing again. Before he pretty much let him hit in him in the face more often that he would catch it. Maybe I'd get a catch or two but that was it. Now he's catching lots of the balls and I can see he is so happy to play again.

All of Eli's blood work has come back normal. I've done as much research on steroids as I can do and talked this out with a couple of my friends. I've decided to start Eli on a short term steroid program. I still have some questions/comments out for the Vet but I'm thinking I'll feel even better about my decision once I hear back from him.

The goal of the therapy would be to increase Eli's muscle mass. He suffers from a great deal of muscle atrophy. I give him near daily physical therapy sessions as well as daily massage. I also encourage him to take 'just a few more steps' when he can, but its never enough. We're thinking if we can improve his muscle mass he would then be more mobile which would increase his quality of life.

I know there are risks involved, but I think I owe it to Eli to give it a try.

Thought everyone would enjoy a picture of Eli. The steroids arrived and we will begin them tonight!!!

Today was amazing. I had taken him outside the gate to the front to give him a bath. Eli doesn't need a leash, he doesn't go anywhere. Well, I was wrong today. That little man 'took off'. He was a dog with a purpose!!! I followed him down the sidewalk in front of our house. I was cringing that he didn't have his shoes on and so afraid he'd hurt his feet. But I could see his determination and there was no way I would stop him. I walked beside him as he crossed the street headed right for the corner where all the dogs pee. He got there and just took in all the wonderful smells. He was in heaven. He actually wanted to go a bit further but I needed to stir him towards home. I didn't want his feet damaged and besides I knew he would tire (which he did), but it was so worth it. I tell ya, he never ceases to amaze me.

The pic of handsome Eli is fabulous as is he. Did he get a bath before he walked across the street with you? I'm thinking if he did the water must have felt refreshing and gave him a burst of energy. Regardless I'm glad for both of you and always glad to see pics of your sweet senior. wub

No he didn't stop for his bath first. He was on a mission and there was no way I was going to stop him. It was just so cute the determination that pup had. He takes little bitty steps when he walks, so there was a lot of effort on his part to make such a long journey.

I just must say, you read about these dogs and you have your own treasured experiences and they still do more.

Maybe Eli was born a prince, but his home and training crowned him.

thanks,

I thrilled to share this update with everyone. Eli began the steroids on Friday. He went potty in his sleep Saturday morning and Sunday morning but hasn't had any other accidents. In fact, Paul and I were out a bit later than I expected yesterday and at about 30 min's to an hour past due for Eli's potty break. I thought for sure I'd come home to a mess. But not so. I got home and Eli made a Bee Line for the yard where he pooped!!!!!! poop Now I guess its possible that our timing just happened to be perfect but I tend to think that maybe Eli was able to hold it!!!! And this morning he didn't even potty in his sleep, that hasn't happened in what seems like forever. I'm just so happy.

Also, yesterday we went on the longest walk he has been on in ages. His spirts are great, he's alert and wanting to be a part of things. I'm just so very happy.

I also forgot, his back legs aren't crisscrossing like they were before, at least not nearly as much as before. And tonight he struggled to get up from the hardwood floors (there is only a small area that isn't covered by a rug and that's where he was), but he struggled up and he didn't poop!!! Again, usually when he struggles to get up he's using sitting in his poop.

I could use some help here help For the past few months Eli's skin has developed scabs all over. I tried the medicated shampoo from the Vets but it didn't help. I've also used Cocconut Oil both orally and topically, doesn't seem to have helped, I've also tried neosporan and other antibiotic type creams with little success-he's still breaking out all over with these scabs.

Everyday I have to completely groom him to get these scabs off, otherwise I fear they would get itchy and I don't want him to suffer. But I'm kind of at my wits end here. I make sure he moves around throughout the day and doesn't sleep in one position too long. I also give him daily full body massages along with physical therapy. So he's getting a lot of touch which I would think would help the skin.

Eli's blood work came back normal including the thyroid. This also started well before he began the steroids, so it's not that.

Doe's anyone have any suggestions on things I might try?

My first thoughts were mange mites are everywhere - perhaps they've gotten the upper hand with Eli? Might be worth a check. Treatment is easy, recovery is swift.

Good luck.

Thanks Middle. I've thought some type of mange too, but for the most part, its not really itchy to Eli. I think it gets itchy when I don't get all the scabs cleared out. When he does lick it the area will really get red and painful looking.

Unfortunately, its so hard to get Eli to the Vet. I just gave him a complete treatment and used a triple antibiotic cream. I also put the donut on him just to make sure he doesn't lick off anything.

All this appears to bother me more than it does Eli. I just want him to be comfortable. If we need to we can make a trip to the Vet.

Hi Rosa -- Rafi gets something like that in the summer at the cottage. It's a skin infection -- he's allergic to the sand fleas. They are like little red pustules. I spray him with Vet's Best Hot Spot Spray and I also give him supplements from Only Natural Pet called Skin Wellness. Hope this helps and hope you and the rest of your pack are well!!!

Thanks Ruth and great to see you smile I'll have to add these things to our arsenal. Right now I have him wearing a donut to stop him from any licking that would set us back.

I do think its some type of allergy, but to what??? He has a follow up appointment on July 9th so I'm really hoping to get this under control by then. I just want him to be comfortable,

I am such a mess. hammer The weather is beautiful today so I thought it was a great opportunity to give Eli a bath. I wanted to try again with that medicated shampoo the Vet gave us. I used most of the bottle the first time but I thought I'd have enough for today. That's when I got to thinking...I never read the instructions before. Looking at them now I was suppose to bathe him 2-3 times a week! It's no wonder the stuff didn't work before.

So I finished the bottle today still wanting to do more. I ran in the house thinking I must have some other type of doggie medicated shampoo around that I could use. Looked and sure enough, found a bottle with Antifungal written on it, grabble the bottle and was off to finish Eli's bath.

I did notice it didn't bubble up like most shampoos and was on the thin side if you will. No worries, I finished Eli and rinsed him clean.

It wasn't until later that I went back to the bottle to check the directions on that one too. As soon as I read about 'filling the left ear...' I knew I had just 'shampooed' Eli with Ear medication.

I rinsed him well, he looks great...I think I'll just pretend this never even happened silly

Rosa, that is an interesting happening. I hope that things improve for you.

Maybe the ear treatment will help Eli feel better.

Time for an Eli update. groovy We checked his bloodwork last week and he's good to go to stay on the steroids. The Vet thinks we should see the best results in another 8-12 weeks. He is walking better, he's pretty lucy goosey in the back but he's not criss crossing his back lets anymore. That helps a lot as he's able to get places without falling so often.

I'm still tackling his skin condition but I think we may be making progress. I've had to clip his hair a lot but I needed to get to where the areas will air out and hopefully heal.

His fecal incontinence has gotten worse, but all we can do is the best we can.

But his spirts are good. There are some days I wonder if I need to let him go but then (as they always seem to do) he perks up and we start over.

I am beyond exhausted and only have a min as I have to go have my CT done., Eli is still with me. I've got to say this is hell. I'll give more details when I get home but he went down for about 2 hours last night. The only thing he could move was his face, his mouth and eyes. I prepared him to pass. When I lifted his rear end to put pads under him he was completely limp.

BUT after a couple of hours he was able to get himself up. I must go but will return soon with more details. Don't worry, I have every reason to think he'll be ok while I go get my CT. This is crazy. I'm so exhausted.

Never easy, always for me hard. Eli, you've been a good, good dog. Thanks for the long companionship you've given Rosa.

This is so hard teary Like I wrote earlier, I thought for sure he was going to pass last night. Now this morning I didn't have a lot of time to spend with him as I had to go get my CT done, but he seemed fine. I got home and he greeted me at the door. I took him out in the front and then later to the back (his favorite place). There he walked up and down the hill twice. What an emotional roller coaster this is and I have a feeling it could go on.

I thought maybe he had a massive stroke last night since all he could move was his eyes and mouth. I don't quite understand how he could go from so bad off to what is a normal for him. Even Kody stayed away from him last night so I thought that was a sign too., Normally Kody's is in the living room in the evening with us but last night he went and layed down in his crate. Again, I thought that was odd.

I don't know what to say. I know the time is coming but its clearly not now. For weeks now, I have struggled to get his pain under control. Its mostly just his front left leg that is such a problem. I've been icing it three times a day and he now get pain meds three times a day. It has helped. I can see where he seems to be more comfortable. Now when I say pain, he is not crying in pain. He limps and I know that he is uncomfortable and that's what I'm trying to resolve. The steroids have helped in the back. He's still loosey goosey in the back but he's able to put one foot in front of the other and not fall down. So that's whats important.

I better post before I loose everything. Thanks for all your support, I have a feeling its going to be a long journey.

Rosa, everyone knows-most especially your dogs-that you signed on for the whole journey. It's so terribly hard-but I say from not so much experience-they are worth every single minute.

take care dear,
MJ

MJ I am cherishing every moment. Funny, I was laying with him earlier and I told him how I was even going to miss 'that look' he sometimes gives when he's going poop. Usually he hasn't got a clue, but every once in awhile he can tell he's going and he looks up at me with those big dark eyes.

We celebrate his life daily and I try to always make him feel special.
