Hi I wanted to know how do you start a rotation diet? I do rotate fresh food weekly and give him Fromm dry. But I want to try another brand and I was wondering how to start a rotation on dog food?

why would you rotate your dog food?

some dogs will get an upset tummy when you change their food.

I usually don't like to rotate but I read a lot of people do it and I don't know how they do it. Well anyway I am feeding him fromm grain free I like grains also, but he don't like any of fromms grain in foods. And from what I can see with my dog is that the grain free gives him bigger slightly soft stools and he can't gain weight. So I was looking for a lamb and rice and I found dr gary's lamb and rice and I am transitioning right now. so far its good. I may want to go back to fromm b/c he likes it so much but not to keep him on it long. I have another question, the third bag I bought from dr garys' food is slightly lighter than the other 2 bags, I am gonna call the company to find out why, should I be considered?

Yukon is one of those few dogs who tolerates food rotation well. I change every 6 months to a year. I make sure they are all good quality, grain free kibble. I also add raw to his diet.

The reason I rotate is because Yukon does not do well when fed strictly one brand. His coat goes dull and dry, his poop softens and he loses weight.

I did speak to his vet concerning the constant change of foods, and his response; "If it works for your dog and he shows no problems, no reason to stop."

I suggest slowly introducing the new food a little bit at every meal. I have no idea about the lighter bag.

I rotate the protein source around with each new bag for the most part. I've read some talk about doing this helps to avoid allergies later in life. Not sure but its worked well with all my dogs. I also rotate the meat I add, mostly between chicken and beef.

When switching from one brand to another I would gradually get him use to the new food by slowly giving him more of the new stuff and less of the old.

Eeek on the protein source change & allergies. Vets I've talked to (it's been a long time) said to save the unique ones so that you would have a "go to" if your dog developed an intolerance for one source. Thought was that if you fed them everything, you'd have nothing novel to change to.

I find it interesting that he does not do well on any one dog food for long. To me that sounds like a red flag.

I too give mine different fresh meats along with dry food. I do beef one week, chicken another and salmon and so on. ya know what I find strange, is that fresh chicken he can handle, but dry food chicken based not so good. that's puzzling. Along the lines for allergies I don't know every dog is different, however wolfs or other wild animals eat different all the time. they eat what ever they find. with us we eat different meats so I don't know how true feeding one thing and to hold off in case of an allergy holds water or not. Sometimes it just don't make sense.
