Larka is 11 1/2 yrs old and recently she has started eating pooh. I'm thinking that maybe something is missing from her diet. She has always been a picky eater and we finally got her on the grain free food from Costco, she loves it. I am not sure but I think they have been on it for at least 6 -8 months.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why?

Well I might be pushing things because I never had a response but it's only been since last night that I posted. I will be going away for a few days and out of range of the internet.
I'm planning on getting Larka some good vitamins and seeing if that will make a difference. There must be something she is trying to find on her own.
But I will say in advance, thanks for the help and I will read any comments when I get back.

Shoshi is a picky eater too. I add chicken to their meals now. I get those roasted chickens at Costco for 5.00 each. Since I don't care to go to Costco often I buy six chickens at a time. Once home and after they have cooled some, I take all the meat off the bones and freeze it in several containers. She still sticks her nose up at it most of the time. She is very picky. As hard as it is, I keep telling myself she will eat when she's hungry. I hope Larka eats better soon. You might also try some low salt broth and add that to the dry food. Good luck!!!

How about some Probiotics. As dogs get older their digestive system seems to change. Fats seem to bother them more.

I have an older Shepherd who has just started eating poop, too.

Any other symptoms, is she losing weight? My two dogs do it but became obsessive and would turn around and eat their own poo. They also started losing weight, blood tests revealed they both had an intestinal parasite ( not killed by worming tablets). That was last summer the treatment and a change to raw diet has transformed them. Both will still try and eat poo but it's not as obsessive. I would definetly have a blood test to check to see if anything else is going on.

Only thing I have is prevention advise -- monitor and scoop! And divert with some other interesting thing - game etc.

I second the probiotic. You can try raw goats milk, too, it's got lots of good stuff.

Thanks peeps, I will definitely try the probiotics. An interesting turn of events. When I went south I took her with me and spoiled her by giving her sardines in her dinner. she hasn't eaten any poo since. It might be that she hasn't had time yet or maybe there is something in the sardines that is helping her.
I'll keep on eye on her, try the probiotics and keep you informed. Oh, and she is due for a senior blood panel soon so I will definitely mention it to the vet.

Sardines - hmm. That sounds like a reasonable "cure". How's it, uh, "going"?

Well as goofy as it might sounds, the Omega 3s in the Sardines seem to be helping. She hasn't eaten any since I started. But maybe it is just a happy coincidence?

If you are making a sarcastic remark, I would appreciate help instead of insults.

As dogs age their system changes also. So what worked before doesn't work now that they are older. Glad some thing is helping.

Sarcastic??? Not intended. Interested in progress just not in to posting terribly "serious" in "not exactly dire" circumstances.

It's interesting how age changes things and what was once total routine now has to be questioned and changed. I have found myself thinking about this with basia lately. They certainly keep us on our toes. Glad the sardines are helping. smile

Pardon me,, my bad. Between Larka and some major life changes lately I'm a bit touchy.
