I am dog sitting for my daughter, out of state, while she is on her honeymoon. Her boy is a love bug and I adore him. Yesterday night he started scooting on his walk and was uncomfortable when defecating. He was fine after pooping on his morning walk today but started scooting again this afternoon. Fortunately I never had this problem with Sean, do you think I should bring him in to have his anal glands expressed, and if so, to the groomer or vet? They return from their honeymoon next Tues. and I'm not sure whether to wait or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Not sure if your daughter is local to you, uses same Vet or Groomer?

Any way, yes I would get the anal glands expressed. Had to have this done once with Cheyenne. Some groomers will express anal glands others won't. Since this is your daughters dog, I would probably do the Vet.

The reason that the dog felt better after defecating is that the gland released some, it just didn't empty out.

I agree on getting the AG expressed, but at the vet.

Groomers are only supposed to express externally, vet techs get the internal part and really empty them.

It can be very uncomfortable for them. Usually you only need a tech appointment so you get right in. Not expensive either..$10.00 where I work.

Poor Chester.

Bonnie, when I had to have Chey's glands expressed, it took 2 techs and the Vet. Chey launched one Tech into a wall. Chey was easy going for the most part, she just didn't care for people man handling her, the Alpha bitch came out of her then, but she never growled or snapped, she just refused to be man handled.

Thanks for the advice Val and Bonnie. You both confirmed what I thought, take him to the vet. Getting ready for our last walk before bed and he started scooting on the hardwood floor.

BTW, unfortunately my daughter does not live in the same state so unfortunately I can't take him to my groomer or vet. But she did leave me their contact info. And she also warned me that he absolutely "hates" going in to have his anal glands expressed. eek

Well at least you know that he might not be very happy about this.

Just a couple questions, (ok if you don't know answers).
How often does he need his glands expressed?
What is he eating for food? Fiber content of food?
Does he have a good firm stool or does he have bouts of soft stools?

I don't mind answering at all - fyi, they adopted him and 2 days later he was so sick the shelter wasn't going to pay for vet care, i.e. would rather put him down, they fought to save him and he has blossomed into a wonderful dog; don't know how often he needs them expressed but I don't think it's a regular habit; pretty sure they feed Blue Buffalo grain free - they're young and have to watch their pennies; stool has been good while I'm here but don't know if he has any bouts of soft stools. Thanks for your help.

on anal glands (lovely topic!)- If the vet expresses these and injects an antibiotic, that may solve the problem. It did with Barker the Elder the first - not with BTE 2. So (different vet) this vet said, those need to go. And removed them. All OK ever since.

Basically, these should not need to be expressed regularly.
