Just wondering how others come up with the names for their treasured pets. Do you reuse the same names or come up with new ones?

Chances are my new boy will be named Shiloh. I've always liked that name.

All of my dogs had a registered name, some I got to pick some were already had their registered name. For their call name(s) I would bring them home and see what fit them.

First two came with names (2 yo and 5 yo)
Next two had geographic call names related to where I got them -- First one had black eyeliner and I had a niece who was into beauty pagents (sp) so, part as a mockery of the beauty contest thing, she became Ms. (county name)(year of acquisition), affectionately referred to as a feminized version of the county name. (It's still easy to remember what year it was I got her because I remember the "full" name!)
Second dog I named had a very unsuitable registered name Timber Ridge's Starry Night - obviously picked by the breeder's kids. So I thought about the town the breeder was in but Murray didn't seem right - I ended up going with the name of the state. I lived in the neighboring state and I don't think I would do that again because it got confusing when people referred to news in that state... As "I see (state) has a problem." It never failed to give me pause!
Third dog, I had forgotten to work on "P" names so I went with the name the breeder liked and her registered name and call name matched.
Fourth dog I named, I looked through a couple of dictionaries under "V" and came up with several possibilities that I liked. Chose one that involved north european goddesses, Wagonerian composition, and "lots of noise" which seemed appropriate for a schutzhund dog.
Fifth dog, breeder had named. I couldn't bear the full name as the only reference was to a contemporary california "mystic" - so I shortened it for her call name. Had I had a choice I was considering "Occupy" because that was the movement of the time and I knew she would "occupy" my time and a bunch of other stuff, too.

So - the dog, the circumstance & whim.

Suki is derived from Suzuki (hubby's motorcycle), and Diva was already named when she came to us.

With Ronin I had heard the name before, but I had forgotten about it. When we picked Ronin from the litter, I just kept trying to find names that would work, but were different. We narrowed it down to Sherlock, Loki and Ronin. Sherlock was too long, so we nixed it, but Loki is a common name around here so Ronin was the one we chose. It really fit him! So I just kind of go with the names I like, pick a couple and then when we bring them home, we'll try them out and see which one seems to fit.

I like that idea and love the name Ronin. I guess I kind of do the same, have a few names I like... but I'm thinking I might name my new boy Shiloh. Another possibility is Dakota...I love that name too.

I don't know Middle, that Timber Ridge Starry Nights name could have been named by an adult blush But that's coming from someone who named her chickens Itsy, Bitsy, Ziggy, Waddles and Wheezy blush

I love both those names so you couldn't go wrong. smile I guess you would just have to see which one would suit. Either way you'll make the right choice! grin

I typically get my names from characters on tv/movies.

For example, Yukon is from Rudolf the RedNose Reindeer. Cisco was named after the horse on Dances with Wolves.

Amber, my Golden was named simply due to her colour.

Right now I am going back and forth on weather I will be getting another dog, or a Himalayan cat.

If a dog, he will be a Sheltie named Roddy, after the legendary actor/photographer/director Roddy Mcdowall.

Himalayan will be Tao, comes from the Siamese cat in the original The Incredible Journey movie.

I got the names Palla (Pal-la) and Larka from a book I read years ago about a wolf pup (Larka) who grows up to save the world as they know it from the evil Morgana. Loved the names and love the book.
I miss Palla, and the soft way her name slips off the tongue. I've thought about using the name again but I'm not sure if it would dishonor my sweet girl, or keep her more alive. If it did the latter, would it be fair to the new dog to imprint, on it an expectation of greatness even if it's not intentional? Or should I come up with a new name for a new friend and let their true character mold an awesome dog without prejudice.

Neither hubby or I gave Sean his name. We told the kids if they could agree on a name we would abide by it, hence Sean. grin He holds a special place in my heart and I don't think I could call another dog by that name, there is and will only be one Sean. wub However, what I might do is name another dog with the same first letter, "S."

I love the name Dakota. A long time ago we looked at a litter of Belgian Shepherd puppies and one of them was named Dakota. I never forgot that name.

The name comes to me when I see the dog. Except in Annabel's case. I loved the name and when I first saw her, it fit her perfectly, so it stuck. I wouldn't use the same name. Just my opinion, but the new pup deserves his own name and identify! smile

I usually have a list prior but it all comes down to what fits when I meet them and get to know them better.

Risa was not on my list of names; nothing on that list suited her. I was sitting with her on the porch one day and noticed her lovely smile. "Sonrisa" is the Spanish word for "smile" and I shortened it to Risa (which is Spanish for "laughter"). Her registered name is a combination of my art studio name (Dancing Cavy Productions) and a bad pun based on where she came from (Butte, MT). So she's Dancing Cavy's Pain in the Butte.

Kyu's name was on my list of preconceived names but it wasn't until I met him a couple times that I decided that was going to be his name. It's Japanese for "nine" which is my favorite number. He was also the ninth puppy in the litter. I didn't have a lot of say in his registered name. I was told the theme was hunting. I had been re-watching "The X-Files" while Risa was on crate rest (which was when I put down my deposit on his litter) and there is an episode called "Kitsunegari" which means "fox hunt" in Japanese. Combined with my love of the mythological nine-tailed fox in Japan, I thought it suited him well. He's also a foxy-lookin' thing. wink So he's Wylde Kitsunegari of Aesir.
